I hope they keep TDEN in the set. The riff at the last 1-2 minutes is so good!!!!

Dream Theater LIVE @ SOLD OUT The Met Philadelphia PA 2/7/2025 *cramx3 concert experience*

A solid hour+ of footage, plus my usual shenanigans.

Just trying to find the pics from the pre show meet up.  Had an absolute blast with everyone. Including the Portnoy family who sat in the same row as me, and I had to squeeze in next to Marlene for a moment (as I chugged my surfside, as seen in the video thanks to Chino's incognito cam)  :metal

Glad someone caught that! None of the other people around me knew they Portnoys where next to us.  I gave Max a handshake as he took questions from other people about the status of his bands.  Code Orange on hiatus, nothing really new about that since their guitarist has been touring with Marilyn Manson.  Even the guy in front of me wearing a Tallah shirt didn't know Max was 10 ft away from him. Melody was there as well and a bunch of family/friends.

I had literally watched your video about 10 minutes before your post. I mean, I skipped through most of the show, but I like the beginnings of your videos. I was laughing at that part.

Thanks, that honestly means a lot considering my intros/outros are always so stupid (but on purpose, I try to make a different type of concert video than just the band performing) and Chino even mentioned to me if I got a traffic rant at the pre show meet up :lol

I'm surprised Chino didn't get a proper intro in the video. If you run into me at a show, I'm expecting a call out! ;D

I also spent a show standing next to Marlene. In 1997. :lol

:lol  You can do the intro if I run into you at a show, maybe outside in the lot with a bunch of shopping carts.

One simple question, how come they play about just one song from the new album.  They began a new leg and the just changed the one song they are playing from the last album.  I mean, there are great new tracks.  Why so little?  Usually all bands basically play a few new songs and I think it would be appropriate to balance that a little.

They have been very up front about this.
This leg is a continuation of the 40th Anniversary Tour. The Parasomnia proper tour will start after this.

Noticed a little Haken from Jordan Rudess the other night

Granted, I didn't realize until googling that Haken is actually a brand? I just thought it was a band. I thought, in the moment, that's kind of cool he's supporting the band! (which we know he is a fan of).

And what is that QR code?  :lol

Because this is a retrospective tour, not a tour for the album. A tour for the album will come on the second legs of each region.

Really, the visuals of this tour are truly incredible! Also I'm very happy that they brought back the N.A.D.S. videoclip from the SC tour, it's classic.

They really did a disservice to Mangini by introducing a click track. Portnoy's performance in this clip, and on this tour in general, is so dynamic, and energetic. It's a tired cliché but he really grooves, and tastefully modulates the tempo (as was pointed out by JP in a recent interview). Mangini probably could've brought this energy, but he was held back. Sure, Mangini could've chosen to not follow the given tempos so strictly, but the band and stage production were relying on him to keep the beat going steady which he, of course, delivered night after night for 10 years. It's great to see Dream Theater going for a proper rock show approach again.

My understanding of clicks is that they can be programmed to speed up or slow down at certain parts. If that's the case then a click wouldn't preclude them from changing the tempo slightly to fit a section here or there. Note this is not the same as unintentionally speeding up which nearly everyone does.

I still disagree with this approach, and I do wonder how often this happened with Dream Theater's click tracks when the tempo changes weren't already in the studio recording. And still, IMO live rock and metal music sounds the best when the performances are informed by the combination of feeling and chops, or intuition and muscle memory if you will. Like I said, JP seems to enjoy it too.
2 minutes and onwards of this. (25:55-> if the timestamp doesn't work)

He can enjoy it all he wants now that Mike in no way shape or form will tolerate a click. It's just that for 15 years he enjoyed the opposite approach enough to ask the dummer at the time to play to a click  :)

In the video he mostly cites technical reasons to do so!

No, I totally get what Mike is saying and why it's a non starter for him.

At the end of the day, I dont care if people prefer it not. It's just that there's a lot of misconception floating around online about the click and what its implications are. People seem to think of you play with it you stop grooving, using dynamics, the band may under no circumstance deviate 3bpm (it can be programmed), and that's simply not the case for any of those things.

You can program tempo changes, yes, but you can't pre-program a musician responding to the atmosphere and energy in the room. For me that's the biggest argument against using clicks live.

Responding to energy and push and pull of the other musicians as well.

You are correct. It stops Mike individually from changing the tempo and having the others adjust to him, but doesn't stop the band from changing it in a choreographed manner.

Also, (I realize you weren't saying this) it does not act like groove or dynamics police and shut everything down for the sake of keeping accurate time.

A timely example from Virgil who just posted himself playing in 7/16 to a click with plenty of dynamics and groove: https://youtu.be/rM59ZSXQ2zs?si=TMEqwz5KM2vq_1GY
