I can see them playing The Alien cuz Grammy, but if they decide to only play 1-3 songs from the MM albums, I'd prefer they leave View alone since they just played 6/7 of those songs.

BAI seems to be beloved by the band (it's the most played MM-era song to date) so that feels like a strong possibility. Would love to see Outcry get some love, but if not I think BAI is the right call off ADToE.

DT12 was my first new release since discovering the band and it's been criminally underplayed since its debut. Behind the Veil only saw the stage for that short Euro festival run in 2015, would love to see that on this set. I'd give anything to see Surrender to Reason live, but that song doesn't seem as popular unfortunately. I think BtV or Enemy Inside are the likely choices.

I have seen DT on every US your cycle since 2014 (besides the I&W 25th anniversary tour), and unbelievably, the ONLY I&W song they've played outside of the anniversary tour is Pull Me Under. I understand the constraints on James, but I really hope this upcoming tour finally gives a different I&W song a chance. I can see them picking more than one song off this album, I'm hoping for Under a Glass Moon, Metropolis, and/or Take the Time.

I'll be at the first show in London so hoping to post the setlist in real time over in the Concerts & Set Lists section as I know many won't want to see spoilers in here. Not sure if there's already a potential set thread but here's a set which I'd quite like to see and featuring songs I think are likely.

The Glass Prison
I Walk Beside You
Misunderstood
Erotomania
Voices
The Silent Man
Transcending Time
Panic Attack
-
As I Am
The Dance of Eternity
S2N
DT16 New Song
Disappear
Metropolis Pt. 1
Breaking All Illusions
The Spirit Carries On
Finally Free
-
Pull Me Under
-
Octavarium

bosk1

I'm guessing 2-3 songs from the Mangini era.  Probably The Alien and either Our New World or Moment of Betrayal.  Maybe On the Backs of Angels if they do a third one.

Setlist Scotty

Assuming they release a song before the start of the tour, I could easily envision a setlist like this for the European leg:

Metropolis
S2N
new song
Paradoxe de la Lumière Noire/Live, Die, Kill -->
Lines in the Sand
The Alien
Ytse Jam
The Spirit Carries On
The Mirror (w/ reprise)
~~~intermission~~~
The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
The Root of All Evil
Repentance
The Shattered Fortress
~~~encore 1~~~
Pull Me Under
~~~encore 2~~~
Octavarium
(about 2h 33m plus time for new song)
And once the album is released in full, if MP decided to go the chronological route again, I could see him do it in reverse chronology with these setlists being possibilities, although I know he's already stated he won't be rotating it up - for now - like he did before he left the band.
new album opener
1 or 2 other new album tracks
Fall Into the Light
Paradoxe de la Lumière Noire/Live, Die, Kill -->
On the Backs of Angels
A Rite of Passage
The Dark Eternal Night
~~~intermission~~~
The Root of All Evil
Stream of Consciousness
War Inside My Head/The Test That Stumped Them All
The Spirit Carries On
New Millennium

I know most people are against medleys, but bookending (or sandwiching?) the show starting with Innocence and ending with Crimson Sunset from A Change of Seasons, like they did in the Falling Into Infinity tour (or at the very least the Once in a Livetime album) would be acceptable to me.

But I'm guessing they'll want to come back big so they're gonna use of the big songs: Metropolis, Pull me Under, Overture 1928 / Strange Deja Vu, or As I Am. Super classics or very strong openers.

genome

I like the bookending idea.

I'm going with Root of All Evil and Octavarium.

You mean like they did for the 20th Anniversary tour? With only a couple exceptions, they opened every show with TRoAE and ended the second set with 8v. I think that's a "been there, done that" situation with those specific songs.

DTA

I do believe Portnoy would want to do the 12SS live with the actual band at some point (though not likely on this current reunion tour), so I'm guessing The Glass Prison will not be included solely for the reason that he knows it will be played eventually and wouldn't want to repeat it.

Schurftkut

it's a fan favorite that hasn't been played in decades, of course it'll be in the setlist! opener for the 2nd half for sure.

MirrorMask

Petrucci's own admission that it's very difficult to play puts a damper on that "of course".

Maybe they could compromise and make Portnoy pinky swear that they'll keep the album tempo rather than speeding up.

Still think this is after the album comes out. First set new album, second set 12SS. This first go around will be focused on being a bit more diverse, I think.

How is the 12SS not diverse? They'll just use those songs to represent those albums. How is using other songs from those albums any more diverse?

Well, they use a lot of the same melodies, riffs, lyrics, drum patterns, etc. Which is great for what it is. I liken it to a concept album done over eight years. The 12SS compared to say, Disappear, Stream of Consciousness, Octavarium, Prophets of War, and Wither... I'd say the latter list of five songs is more diverse. IMO.

It's not diverse because it's the same thing for almost a full hour.  Using any other combination of other songs from those albums would automatically be more diverse.

devieira73

About 12SS, I think it's very unlikely to be in the setlist, since MP is mentioning that the setlist will have "the best songs" from their career (I guess JLB also mentioned something like that). Sure this is always subjective, but I think the last 2 parts of 12SS are very divisive among the fan base. And maybe Repentance is considered among the less liked songs in their catalogue?

I think the chance of getting "The Glass Prison" is probably 50/50.

Quote from: TAC on October 02, 2024, 10:47:05 AMHow is the 12SS not diverse? They'll just use those songs to represent those albums. How is using other songs from those albums any more diverse?

Sure it's representing 5 different albums, but it's understood to be a whole body of work. I'd say it's like viewing it as playing an album in full. Plus it's about 60 min in total. If they decide to do one of the 25 min epics, that only leaves about 65 min for the other 9-10 albums in the set, and on their "40th anniversary" tour, I don't think that's enough room.

I was at first very certain they'd do the 12SS on the first tour (and I am very, VERY much hoping they do it at some point). But I can see the argument as to why it wouldn't make sense on this tour. Very few people got to see MP's Shattered Fortress, I sincerely hope they do the suite in full one day!

MirrorMask

Frankly I was not already that crazy about the suite being played in full, but now that it seems that This Dying Soul and The Root of All Evil can't be played back to back makes me even less interested.

It was the masterplan all along to create a single giant song interconnecting in a seamless way all the songs... and they couldn't think of a way to make the transition between This Dying Soul and The Root of All Evil work live? (It seems that it's a different key and you'd probably need to physically switch guitars as well)

If you play back to back the ending of This Dying Soul and the "real" intro of Root it's so obvious they're meant to flow continously, but leaving the intro as a pre-recorded stop gap defies the whole purpouse.

"But come on, TGP and TDS are 25 or so minutes of heavy fast music, you want the guys to pass out by adding other 8 heavy minutes with Root?" .... again: if the masterplan all along was playing the whole thing together, they should have paced it better.

I CAN see the entire 12SS played on the album cycle tour. Maybe THIS?

SET 1:
12SS

SET 2:
ENTIRE new album

ENCORE:

Hard to judge without knowing the new album.  Could be that the new album is so good I'd be fine with the 12SS opening the show to get the full new album... or the album could be so so and then that entire set would look uninteresting.

Maybe. I enjoyed seeing PoS when I did, but was still bummed to only get one song (possibly 2) before their most recent two albums. I haven't seen DT since before MP left. The 12SS is whatever, just very specific, and I didn't buy tickets to see mostly just an album I haven't heard.

MP is smart enough to realise that most fans don't want the 12SS in all its tedious repetitiveness to take up half of an entire show.
