While some may argue about content, purely in terms of sales, I am *shocked* that Def Leppard with Hysteria following up Pyromania hasn't been listed by anyone. I'd also think that Bon Jovi's New Jersey was a very good followup to Slippery When Wet.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

To me, both of those were massive letdowns.

To you and some of the people here, sure, but to the wider audience Hysteria is probably even more popular than Pyromania, and I expect that New Jersey is probably right up there with Slippery When Wet even if not as universally revered.

To keep the thread connected to DT, to me these are Dramatic Turn and DT12
(and possibly I/W and Awake, if you're partial to MP era DT)

Disconnected following A Pleasant Shade of Gray

I'm curious about this.  In the FW countdown, you ranked the 11 tracks of APSOG (X & XI were combined) as your #1-11 songs (and I believe you commented that, had we done APSOG as a single song, it would have been your number 1).  However, you had the five tracks on Disconnected (not including the two parts of the title track) as your 12, 15, 21, 28 and 36 songs.  So how is Disconnected as good as or better than APSOG?

Yeah...Hysteria was, IMO, one of the worst things to happen to metal in the '80s.  If this were just a matter of sales, then we could just look up the numbers and compare.  I don't know when the certifications were received, but both albums are certified Diamond, with Pyromania at 10M and Hysteria at 12M.

I'm one of the few who would agree that DT12 > ADTOE, but would you really call ADTOE a "landmark" album?

I would put Hysteria above Pyromania, but I'd also probably consider Hysteria to be the landmark album of those two, and then I would say that Adrenalize was a step down. But Hysteria following Pyromania certainly makes sense as an answer.

it's mostly based on total listening time. As much as I love APSOG, I don't listen to it as often as Disconnected, mostly due to the fact APSOG I listen to all-at-once, as I consider it 1 song. And APSOG is bit more of a mood record.

But in ranking their albumss, I would not place Disconnected ahead of APSOG, however given I listen to it more often I see it in some ways as about as good as APSOG.

These are probably a stretch but meh.....

Helloween - Keeper 2 after 1
Children of Bodom - Follow the Repear after Hatebreeder
In Flames - Clayman after Colony
Savatage - Streets after Gutter Ballet
King Diamon - Them after Abigail
Joe Satriani - Flying in a Blue Dream after Surfing with the Alien
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Slave to the Grind over Skid Row s/t.
Badlands "Voodoo Highway" as good as s/t.
Yngwie Marching Out over Rising Force.
The Last In Line as good as Holy Diver.

Lots agree with but trying think of ones not mentioned that were as good if not better...

Tesla's Great Radio Controversy after Mechanical Res...
Megadeth's Countdown To Extinction after Rust In Peace...
Aerosmith's Pump after Permanent Vacation...
Huey Lewis And The News' Fore after Sports...
Soundgarden's Superunknown after Badmotorfinger...
Sevendust's Animosity after Home
Stone Temple Pilots' Purple after Core
Van Halen's OU812 after 5150
Noiseworks' Touch after their debut

And to round out 10 my controversial dare I say unpopular choice would be Whitesnake's Slip Of The Tongue after 1987...

There I said it  :lol

Possibly a hot take, but:

RHCP: One Hot Minute following Blood Sugar Sex Magic

Definitely a hot take.  I love One Hot Minute, but I can't put it over BSSM.

A couple others just mentioned that I agree with:

Kid A >>>> OK Computer

STP Purple >>>> Core

Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith >/= Screaming for Vengeance >> British Steel

While this is true, I completely forgot about Point of Entry (which doesn't get as much credit as I think it should, but it doesn't work for purposes of this thread).

Again, though, we're sort of straining credibility with the label "landmark album".

But yeah I loved OU812 never ever understood the dislike for it (production aside but that could also be said of 5150).
