Hey folks, time for another TheHoveringSojourn808 mega thread

In today's thread, we're going to be discussing how we want the tour that will inevitably accompany the new DT with Mike Porntoy to go

For myself, being a big prog fan, I'd love it if they revived Progressive Nation. Was also fond of that format, saw both of the original runs back in the day, and would love to see it make a return. This would be my ideal PN2024/2025 lineup:

Dream Theater (of course, playing either the new album in full or half of the new album + fan favorites like Disappear and Space-Dyed Vest)
Haken (Maybe the most controversial pick, but I do like Haken quite a bit [but not their V albums. You know what they say: If you stay away from the V, with Haken you shall be])
Moon Safari (One of today's best prog bands, no brainer for them to be included here)
Beardfish (They have recently, reunited, maybe they'll have a new album and can take up the opening slot they unfortunately missed back in 2009)

What about you all, excited to dive into other's ideas!!  :corn

I am all about the "Evening With" format.  In fact, not just for DT, but for every band I see in concert.

TheHoveringSojourn808

i hypothesize most people will agree with you, especially considering the reunion. for me i like how prog nation introduced me to some cool bands and it gives smaller bands a chance to get a real crowd

edit: my zappa fixation started at prog nation 09 :metal

Oh man, bringing back Progressive Nation with Mike Portnoy and DT headlining would be epic! Love your picks, but let's mix it up a bit with some of my faves:

Frost*: These guys have a sound that's out of this world. Their live performances? Absolutely electrifying. They'd be a blast on the PN stage.

Big Big Train: A prog band that deserves the attention. Their storytelling through music is just mesmerizing, perfect for a night of prog entertainment.

Thank You Scientist: Talk about a band that knows how to mix it up. Their blend of prog, rock, and a dash of the unexpected makes for an incredible live show. You never know what you're gonna get, but it's always amazing.

Riverside: These guys bring the mood and atmosphere. Their sound has this deep, emotional pull that's just captivating.

Throwing these into the mix with DT would make for an unforgettable night.

TheHoveringSojourn808

thanks. i've never heard of Big Bad Train but the other three are some of my favorites!!

gotta check out the BBT next 👀

I'm all still for an evening with summer reunion tour BEFORE the next album cycle tour.

Chino

I don't like opening acts at anything, ever, so evening with for me.

Though, I realize that's getting harder as the guys age, so I'd be cool with three hours of DT and friends. If they want to incorporate stuff from side projects as part of those three hours to give some guys breaks throughout the night, I'm fine with that.

Oh, I'm all in on the "Evening With" shows, especially when it comes to bands like Dream Theater. But, to be real, I don't see it happening anymore considering James' intense vocal demands. Pulling off those marathon shows night after night is a tall order I'd imagine, regardless of set list.

Given their age(s) and JLB's admission of limitations,  I would love a co- headlining tour witn another band that has a strong following and drawing power. Getting butts in the seats is not an easy task these days. Some possible options; Black Label Society. Alter Bridge, WVH, Maiden(dreaming), A7X.

An Evening With. DT doesn't have that many years left.  I am not interested in another band taking away from hearing DT's music.

I think you've got to do the big evening with for the first tour. After that you can go back to prognation, but for the others too much lost time to make up for.

"Dreamscone" sequel

Dreamscone??

I was going to say that I don't care to any other band on the bill, but that's not entirely true.  The problem is that, other than when they toured with Fates Warning, I've yet to see a DT show with an opener that I liked.  Honestly, I can probably count on two hands (and still have fingers left over) the number of times I've truly enjoyed an opening act, so I say bring back the "evening with" format.
Feelin' kinda spooky.

LMAO missed that typo, meant to write Dreamsonic, will fix haha

I selfishly picked Evening With, but given their age, I'm fine with a standard tour; an opening act and two hours (and a little something more maybe) of DT extravaganza  :metal

James can "survive" a three hours show, they just have to space better the songs; put an instrumental in each set, have an acoustic interlude....

I agree about a co- headlining tour. I would think bands like Nightwish, Symphony X, Testament etc would be a more likely fit. 🤔

Don't think that's the most likely scenario. I would imagine, based on past history, that it might be something more akin to this:

summer 2024 - warm up tour through Europe with a mix of festival gigs and headliners with various openers
September 2024 - album release
October-November 2024 - North American run (either headliner with single opener or Evening With)
January-February 2024 - European run (same as North American run)
March or April 2025 - Asian/Australian run (same as North American run)
April or May 2025 - South American run (same as North American run)
June-July 2025 - possible North American Progressive Nation package or no second run through North America
---break---
October-November 2025 - European Evening With run (40th anniversary)
January 2026 - Asian/Australian Evening With run (40th anniversary)
February 2026 - South American Evening With run (40th anniversary)
March-April 2026 - North American Evening With run (40th anniversary)

Then again, it is true that they like to shake things up, so anything is possible. But I do think the above (or something similar) is probably the route they'll take.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
Quote from: TAC on July 10, 2024, 08:26:41 AMPOW is awesome! :P

Would just prefer evening with...unless it's going to be one of two or three other bands I like. I didn't care for the opener to the View tour so would happily take more DT.

Barring a MASSIVE change in the public's listening appetite, Dream Theater will never headline at MSG or the Sphere, co-headline or not.

Maybe Red Rocks. That would be cool.
