What if.....

both JP and JLB departed the band, and in their place, MP, JR, and JM teamed up with.. Devin Townsend?

sounds kind of insane, but also it would be a seismic shift in the bands sound and direction

Obviously, it'll never happen, but if it did, hell, even if it was just a side project and not even called DT, it would be awesome

What do y'all think?  :millahhhh :hat

so they call it Devin Theater, i know it's not happening and unrealistic, but what i want to know is what you'd think of the music? would it inflame your soul? would it make you laugh, cry?

Well, considering Hevy Devy is an infinitely better vocalist than JLB, but not as good of a guitarist as JP technically (however his style and tone appeal to me way more than JP), I think they would need another guitarist. It would be an interesting concept for a one off or something like that, but considering it would never happen as a legitimate band...

I think a more realistic scenario (considering Devy likes to be in control of everything on his albums) would be some or all of the Dream Theater guys having guest spots on one of Devin's albums.

I think it would be pretty good.

Devin has that ethereal side which JR would compliment greatly if utilized correctly, and he also has that Zappa-esque, fusion side which the rest of the guys would also be totally into, especially MP and JR. It'd be like an album of Trial of Tears type music in my mind. Totally on board.

yeah, i'm totally with you on that. the thought of devin townsend and jordan rudess collaborating sounds like a dream come true. devin's ethereal vibes mixed with jordan's intricate keyboard work could create some mind-blowing compositions.

the mention of a Zappa-esque, fusion side is intriguing too. imagining how the rest of the guys, especially mike portnoy and john myung, would dive into that fusion element is exciting. it could bring a unique dynamic to the music, blending devin's diverse influences with the technical prowess of the dream theater members.

the comparison to "trial of tears" gives a good reference point – that kind of epic, progressive sound could indeed be the result of such a collaboration. just thinking about the potential for complex arrangements, emotional landscapes, and instrumental brilliance is enough to get any prog fan excited.

it's always fascinating when musicians from different backgrounds come together, and devin townsend joining forces with dream theater members would undoubtedly be a sonic adventure. fingers crossed that someday we get to witness this collaboration unfold in reality.

I often imagine different personnel in DT but Devin Townsend is not one of them lol. Also removing JP from DT basically ends the band given the outsized importance of the guitar and the fact that we have had one guy for 30 years.

ok fine, JP can stay, but he has to be backup singer/flugelhorn player
