No. We’ve had a little revolt up here. It seems another false prophet has endorsed my book.

I am curious why Indi finds harshness in vocals different than say, distortion on a guitar.  I know people who are strictly acoustic or clean only for guitar sounds, and view any noticeable overdrive with distaste.  It seems a rather similar argument to me.

I know for me, it's apples and oranges.  I don't think about it much, but viscerally there's something soothing about a distorted guitar, but there's something unsettling and... ugly? about harsh vocals that aren't pleasing to me. I generally rely on music to make me feel good; I'm not a very aggressive guy in that sense of the word.

It took me a long time to tolerate harsh vocals. To me, it was like putting onions on top of a great meal. I hate onions!

I found myself getting really bored with music though. Seemed like any new exciting music had a degree of harsh vocals on top of it. It just seemed more boundary pushing to me. It took a while to find a sweet spot for them, and while I don't really love them, I feel like it's a necessary evil sometimes.

I prefer harsh vocals when they express anger or frustration along with the music, when they're cathartic. Ordinary growls or shrieks kind of bore me, hence why I never got into death or black metal.

This is exactly how I feel about growls.

That's a good way of putting it  :tup  and how I feel as well. Which is why I believe that harsh vocals are absolutely necessary for certain songs. A good example, off the top of my head, is Gojira's Global Warming.

I find myself gravitating towards screams more than growls these days for this reason - they're usually a lot more expressive.

Ignore that both of the songs I sent mostly use growls. :lol

a lot of death and black metal growls/rasps kinda just sound silly to me, but screams do it for me a lot more, yeah
...one of the two songs i sent leans into that goofiness and i really hope it's the one podaar picked bcuz if i were sending just one song it'd be that one. and if i were sending two songs it'd be that one twice  but i'm not allowed to do that. i hope podaar didn't pick the boring safe one.

Ultimately for me they're just another type of texture and part of the toolkit of vocal expression.  Singing, yelling, screaming, whispering, growling, rapping, yodeling, scatting, konnakol, etc., all have their uses, and I enjoy varying amounts of each.  With harsh vocals they're not always even that aggressive, depending upon how they're mixed, the music accompanying them and such.

And this is where I'm parked; it's a flavor, a color, a texture.   I don't really like saxophones either, so there's that.

I think I’m more like this too. And of course it’s only now that I’m thinking of a perfect song that does exactly this - a cathartic buildup towards growls. Far more so than any of the two songs I sent. Ah well.

Haha.

It's really specialized; I actually played in a band with multiple saxophones and it was awesome.  What I don't like is the clichéd saxophone solo in the "bluesy" standards.  "Money" is another example that I don't care for.   Something like "Baker Street" though?  All day long.

I don't mind brass if it's done right; Atom Heart Mother is one of my favorite Floyd tunes; the live versions without the brass parts are decidedly less excellent.

I'm a bit busy because we are hosting all of our families for Easter this week-end and I swear the preparations are worst than directing two Rigolettos at once.

I'm cooking the bizarro right now though.
