Your favorite original movie plots

By original I mean, not based on any existing intellectual property. Pixar has been the absolute kings of this, I mean how people could come up with the ideas for stuff like Monsters Inc, Up, Wall-E, and Elemental blows my mind.

It's a little trickier with live-action stories because you don't have limitless CGI at your disposal, but I'll ask the question:

What are some of your favorite live-action stories/plots from movies that you feel have the most originality?

If we're basing this solely on a film/tv show/story not based on a pre-existing IP, then one of my favorite original films in recent times has to be Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. It's just really good character writing and storytelling with some breathtaking visuals and one of my all-time favorite original soundtracks to date. Is it the MOST original space story? Probably not, but the way everyone involved put in some of their best work really helps sell the story for me, and I enjoy it every time I watch it.

As far as Pixar stuff, my favorite has always been The Incredibles, but I'll admit to having not watched most of their latter-half of releases. I should try and catch up on some of those this year.

This. The Daniels put together an amazing film, so much so, that I ended up buying it twice on BD - once as a regular release from Target (somehow on sale the week it came out), and then later on as the special edition set from A24's own store. Worth every penny.

This is a tough one. Since a ton of my favorite original movies are more character based and the plot is usually pretty simple and there to serve the characters. So I can’t just pick movies I like. I’ll have to think about actual plots I enjoyed.

A second viewing helps. Lots to unpack. The first time is just a wild ride. The second time, now that you know what is happening in the overall plot, you can focus more on characters and small moments that add all of the depth and flavor.

So the movie was just exploring some philosophical ideas as she saved the mutliverse? Am I missing something more? I liked it for that alone, I don't know if there is something else.

I guess it depends who you ask. To me, it’s really a story about the mom and daughter. With a ton of layers to it. The multiverse stuff is just kind of amazing dressing.
