Arch Enemy

So good they had to be banned twice!

Do you want to find out how good they actually are?

Be my guest!  I've heard a few of their tunes - shit, I think I even submitted one to Tim' in the Girls round he had once.

Really?  Are we thinking of the same band?
He's probably thinking of Issa.

Derek Sherinian probably stands 10 feet away from the urinal, shoots from downtown, and announces loudly that he's making history.

Round 6 Results

Jingle.boy: Arch Enemy – You Will Know My Name (Live)

Excellent female growling and clearly one of the best songs of the round. It definitely has that live recording energy to it, which I suspect adds quite a lot. The riffs are good, the solo is nice and appropriate (though not really mind-blowing), and the song has a really nice hook. Or perhaps it's just that this song looks better than it is alongside the more mediocre submissions in the group? 7

Got the highest score of the round as well!

Arch Enemy generally falls into the good-but-not-great category for me, but Alissa's such a good vocalist that she really elevates them. Their lyrics are pretty bad though, enough that even I'm noticing it.

That was to Nelson, not Tim.  Female harsh vocals are no problem for Nelson, he tried to send me Lingua Ignota.

Yeah, I mis-remembered who had that round.

But you can suck it too!  I KNEW I sent it to Tim:

Interesting Arch Enemy song Chad.  Didn't think you'd like that at all.

Round 2

Women In Uniform

JINGLE BOY-That's What She Said

8. Arch Enemy-Walk In The Shadows 7.0

Ooff.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WOLFKING-The Bitches Are Back In Town

1. Arch Enemy-Blood On Your Hands** 8.5

This song is total metal. Not sure I'm totally on board with this chick's vocals. Kind of creeps me out.

2. Arch Enemy-Nemesis  8.5

I like this one a lot, vocals notwithstanding. This song is loaded with Schenkerisms, and you know I appreciate that.

Kade clearly knows the band better than I.  :lol

Yes, playlist is very cool and very legal.

Also, I'll say round 1 has officially begun now, so the five people who haven't submitted yet have 72 hours to do, or until around 10 Tuesday in local Shadow Ninja time.

Round 1 sent.

First rounds always take longer to figure out what to pick, especially when needing more music, and with a host with more inscrutable tastes.  I have lots of ideas starting to line up now though.

Ninja, question about scoring. How will you be scoring multiple songs? Like, if I add a little 2 minute interlude in my 20 minutes of music, is that likely to bring my average score down?

My gut is that I want to make sure my 20 minutes gives you a good idea of what each band is capable of. Interludes could improve the overall flow of my submission, but if I'm gonna end up with a lower score average because of it, I'll skip that approach.

Great to have all you guys in for the first time! The 'just try random stuff' method is one I employ pretty much exclusively in all roulettes so I strongly endorse it. Although I've never actually won one, so maybe you should ignore my advice.

i have no intention of winning i just hope my submissions are interesting (they are)

I find your taste just as incomprehensible as mine, so I'm always interested to see what you send. Not saying I'll like it, but you never know. I still play that Actor | Observer album you sent me some songs from last time around.

Every bit of music you send counts towards the score. If it's a good interlude that adds to the songs the same way a calmer section or a spacey bit in a long prog song does, then it won't hurt your score, but if it's boring it will. I don't think flow is something you really need to worry about though, I'm largely flow-blind and don't mind jumping straight from mùm to Archspire.

The main issue I have with post-hardcore in general is the non-scream vocal lines tend to strike me as really weak and not particularly melodic or memorable. I don't know if it's an intentional choice that I'm just not understanding, or what, but it seems pretty common to me. I think it's one of the reasons I tend to listen to more metalcore than post-hardcore; even though a lot of metalcore groups go too far into overproduced poppy clean sections for me personally, they're usually at least catchy and nice to listen.

I do like post-hardcore, though, Thrice and Capstan are two I really love that I don't feel fall into the vocal trap. Also Brutus? I guess they're kind of post-hardcorey although they still sort of defy categorization to me.

I feel like if you mapped out the styles and genres we both tend to like the big picture would look very similar, but within that we differ quite a lot, to the point that we're nearly opposites in a lot of ways.

Interesting, I understand mine so much better now than a year ago.  I guess the 8th roulette must be where things fall apart.  ;)

That actually sounds intriguing though, I might bug you about it if you don't wind up sending it.
