Shadow Ninja's Homestuck roulette: obama's rap solo
« on: January 03, 2024, 10:38:34 PM »
At last. It's here. For so long, something has felt amiss. Sure, the forum is fine. There are some good discussions, some fun roulettes. But something is missing. Where are the Homestuck gifs? Where are the shockingly brutal scores? Where are the hosts whose tastes are nearly as incomprehensible as their jokes? Where is the thread that you can never find because the asshole host keeps changing the name every five fucking seconds?

You breathe a sigh of relief. The long night is over. You immediately sign up for this roulette without even reading the banned list or the rules, because honestly who gives a shit?

That said  RULES

This is a classic Shadow Ninja roulette, made more classic by the fact that I stole bits of it from other roulettes. There are no themed rounds, no eliminations, no gimmicks, and no complicated rules. Like last time, you can send up to 20 minutes of music from a single artist in a playlist form, containing any number of songs, provided they total less than 20:00. Submissions above this maximum will be rejected.

Songs should be submitted via Youtube or Spotify playlists.

I plan for there to be 8 rounds. Last time I pretty much stuck to 1 round a week as I was working from home every day at the time, but as I'm only working 2 days a week from home now and am just generally more busy, I'm going to say each round will be 1.5-2 weeks in total. Submissions will be due 3 days (72 hours) after results from the last round are posted. You can still send your stuff after that, but no guarantee is made that I'll be able to listen to it as many times as the on-time submissions. I'll also send out a PM to everyone at the conclusion of each round to remind you to submit.

Banned artists are listed in the banned list down below, which is hopefully mostly comprehensive. All of the artists on this list are completely banned and no songs from them can be sent. There are artists that I've heard a few songs from, but don't feel as though I know them well enough to ban them, so only those songs will be banned. There's no convenient way to list that, so we'll just assume it won't happen much, and if it does I'll just let you know and you can swap it out.

SCORING

Songs will be scored on a scale from 1-10. In most roulettes scores will generally sit between 7-9, with occasional deviation for really good or bad songs, but to me it doesn't make much sense to have a scale I only touch a quarter of, since even if there is some hypothetical 'worst music ever' that would receive a score of 1 and make me want to tear my ears off, realistically most music I'm going to get is at worst kind of annoying or just boring. Thus something can score a 4 or 5 in my roulette if I just find it decent but not very interesting or engaging.

The scores may appear vicious at first, but they're really not. This also means scores can vary quite wildly from round to round, so don't count yourself out just because you're 10 points behind or something, that could easily be almost entirely wiped out in one round.

TASTES

No one I know in real life or on the internet seems to have a good handle on my taste in music. Even I don't really understand it, but I'll try to give you an idea of the kind of stuff I enjoy and hopefully it will be at least somewhat helpful.

Of course, I like metal. All sorts of metal, prog, power, death, black, weirdo shit, etc. That doesn't mean I'll like any type of metal (and I'll particularly warn against sending standard prog metal, because I will score it even more harshly than other songs), but just inherently I like huge powerful riffs and pounding drums.

I like music that's surprising or unpredictable, that mixes different influences and does something I haven't heard before. I like extreme, complicated music and I also like quiet indie songs. I tend to very much be a vocals first kind of guy; while there are some instrumental bands I love, most of the music I spend my time listening to has vocals and the vocals are most likely to be the make-or-break element in a song for me. I can appreciate nice lyrics, but it's not really a necessity for me. If anything, I tend to just enjoy words or phrases that sound interesting, regardless of whether they actually mean anything.

I tend to struggle to enjoy rap, classical music often strikes me as a bit dull, pop is usually but not always overly simplistic and repetitive, and I really fucking hate Gwen Stefani's voice.

Maybe some of that will be useful, and maybe not. You can always look at my past roulettes to see what's done well (I'll link them at some point), or feel free to just ask me about my taste on any particular style or genre.

VICTIMS PARTICIPANTS

Finally. You've scrolled through all that bullshit up there without reading it, and now you're finally to the good part. You feel an irresistible urge to add your name to this list of intrepid explorers, and succumb to it immediately.

I can send you all the good stuff I can’t send Chad.  Plus, since I’ve been largely gone for eight years I’ll just send stuff not on the banned list so you might get something very new that catches your attention - for better or worse.

I already knew that SN and I were not a match, but these two statements validate that I should NOT participate in this roulette.  lol

SN's tenure on the forum was after/before my time, so it'll be a feeling out process for me for sure, but in the limited amount I've discovered, I unearthed this from the previous roulette.

TASTES
...
I do, however, want to strongly caution against prog metal. There's a ton of that stuff on my banned list, because I listened to a ton of it years ago, and while I still enjoy a lot of my favorites, I very very rarely find anything new in that mold that excites me at all. So, don't send it. At this point I'm not going to reject submissions, but you're likely to get a pretty weak score and hopefully that will be sufficient deterrent.

Lol, that kind of says it, doesn't it?

And welcome to new faces as well!

I'm sure I missed it in the OP, but do you prefer Spotify links or something else?

Yeah, I wrote it last night when I was pretty tired so I missed some stuff. I've edited it in, but basically Spotify or Youtube is fine.

.

Is this an entry? If so, you're in. If not, you're in anyway, and I expect you to start sending songs immediately.

Definitely in.  Basically I can send the opposite type of music I'm sending to Chad.  Perfect.  :burns:

I can send you all the good stuff I can’t send Chad.  Plus, since I’ve been largely gone for eight years I’ll just send stuff not on the banned list so you might get something very new that catches your attention - for better or worse.

I already knew that SN and I were not a match, but these two statements validate that I should NOT participate in this roulette.  lol

Join anyway and just send me stuff you hate. There's at least a chance that it'll turn out to be a winning strategy.

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

i remember shadow mostly for sending me a ton of absolute garbage in the first half of my first roulette followed by being the most interesting and best-scoring participant in the second half of my first roulette  :corn

i live for the chaos and i have a lot of chaos i'm looking to inflict on him. i dunno if it's all good chaos. but it is definitely chaos

I remember this differently, I think I sent amazing stuff all the way through, but at halftime your tastes dramatically improved.

Also, I won't officially start the first round for a few days in case more people want to join, but if you want to go ahead and send me your first submission you're free to do that.

I'll play if there's still room.  A lot of crossover on that banned list.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Well, if Tim's willing to give it a go, maybe I will.  I've got to find upwards of 120-160 minutes of eclectic (for my tastes) stuff.  Dunno.  Maybe.  If I decide to go at it, I'll send something by the end of the weekend.  I've got to get my round of scoring up for the boys before I can start to look for stuff here.

Shit, now I have to work out how to create a Spotify playlist.  This might take me a while.  ;D
