So sorry crystal. Several years ago we almost lost my beloved dog. One surgery costing a couple of stimulus checks later, he has more energy than when he was a puppy. Hoping for the best for you and your cat. Animals truly are family.

Thanks and yes, they are. 💙 I started a thread in General Discussion about pets with cancer (in part so that the topic can have it's own thread in the correct place). So far she's doing well after surgery but it's just the first battle in what may be a long war. So glad to hear that things went well for your dog.

I'll check it out. So far we haven't had to deal with cancer. Ill save the longer explanation for the thread. So glad this first battle has been won.

I realized the ironic part of this discussion is how in these videos MP is playing to the pre-recorded tracks, which are basically like click tracks.  :corn

But damn, I miss seeing him drum these tracks.
I don't know how they can be so proud of winning with them odds. - Little Big Man

I'm gonna try even harder, lol! Maybe this is his way of preparing/training himself for the inevitable presence of the click track.  :rollin

In the studio, yes, which is what he was replicating.

Exactly. Which is what he's always done in the studio in the first place.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Several drummers at the same time worked for King Crimson, especially live but that music is very different from DT and was rearranged to work with whatever lineup they were rolling with at the time.

But not only is the music vastly different but I don't see how having them both wouldn't put MM in a pretty uneviable spot.

King Crimson is a whole other thing. But yeah all things being equal that would work in theory but who knows if it could actually work.

I totally agree, it was just the only example I could think of. But then again, KC's music is malleable in a way that DT's isn't in terms of instrumentation. Plus they have had a million members so it's not the best comparison I agree.

Based on the way MP has been talking about this, there was about 0.00000000001% chance two drummers was an idea in anyone's mind.

Tomorrow Drumeo will share a new episode with MP.
They said in their post that we don't have idea of what song he will be playing so I imagine this ep. will be the one where they play an entirely new song for their guest to improvise on it.

Oooh, I hope so! They're always fantastic to watch, especially when it's a genre the drummer doesn't specialise in.

One of the comments I saw said it'd be awesome if the song he had to drum to was a MM era DT song :lol

Definitely not going to happen, but I'd love to see that lol
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."

What do you reckon is the genre that Mike Portnoy might not dive into as much? If I had to take a guess, it could be electronic dance music (EDM).

Some EDM artists I would like him giving a try:

Avicii, The Chainsmokers, Calvin Harris and Zedd who's known for his work in electro house and progressive house, with notable tracks such as "Clarity" and "Stay."

I think MP playing a MM DT era song would be the wildest thing these videos could do! I also would love it, but it could potentially start the III World War! ;D
On another note, the next video will be with MP (Modern Drummer tribute to Alex VH):

This one with Ray is amazing though, specially for people that love OU812.

Does anyone else find it odd though that he's the only one doing any publicity currently? The rest of the band may as well have gone off the grid.

The only publicity MP has done though were pre-arranged before the reunion was announced. The Drumeo thing was scheduled well in advance, and they purposely changed up some of what he would play as a result of the announcement. It’s not like he was invited on because of the reunion.

On Facebook, a thread was started related to this video asking what we thought it would be. When I posted maybe Zappa's The Black Page, one of the admins thought it would be too much and that it would probably modern country or pop. MP responded with:

I’ll tip you off…this video is a song from “another genre” that that I am clueless with…
And THIS particular series is more of a “fun” experiment they do…usually making a drummer play a genre they don’t normally play…so it was more fun than a challenge…
But they also do a different series where you have to “learn a song as fast as possible” that I also did (will come out in the coming months)…that they REALLY put me through the ringer with! 😳🤯

I saw the IG post about 5 hours ago.  I CAN'T WAIT to see what song they pull out that he doesn't know.  Like they kinda said in the clip, he's sorta like a walking musical encyclopedia.  Should be awesome.  I hope they have a lot more MP stuff in the can to roll out.  Their "bits" all seem to be custom-made for Mike.

Well that was delightful! I quite enjoyed that, spotting all of Mike's usual grooved and fills, but they all somehow worked with the song. I am by no means a Nickelback fan, but Mike's drumming made that song listenable for me.  :lol

No good reason, really.  They are just a rock band, doing their best and playing their music.

It's not like they are KISS or anything.

Say what you say about MP's drumming (he doesn't practice, same drum fills, etc. I was one of those) but the guy's arrangement skills are extraordinaire. I think whenever DT calls it quits, MP would be an amazing producer. That Nickelback song sounded amazing with MP's drumming.

I love that shot of the guys in the booth (at 6:56) when they're all just like, "YES!" Portnoy gets what the song needs. Equally fascinating when he hears it played back and (nicely) criticizes it. Great video.
