Awake with the commanding lead.  Will it hold it?  Nope.

No confirmation from our benevolent overlord, but I'm certain we'll see no more songs from View, WDADU and TA.  Poor TA; quite a pitiful showing.  It beat out WDADU in the last countdown and got 10 songs in the mix, 7 of which finished above 90.  This time, only 3 songs and none above 90.

At wit's end didn't make it for me. There is actually a handful of solid songs on Distance over time that I decided not to include. They're not quite top 100 material.

The Root of all evil was my #59. It holds a special place in my heart as Octavarium was the second Dream Theater album I ever heard and that chorus really got stuck in my head. I went through a period of not really loving the song as a whole, but nowadays I dig it again.

Lifting shadows of a dream was my #33. What a unique song in their discography. It took me a couple of years to fully appreciate it, though. Seeing it live in 2014 sealed the deal for me.

I'm very excited for the top 35, this will be good.  :metal

41. Disappear

I always thought this song was a little strange. While it's fairly short it didn't really pull me in, it felt more like a transitional track than anything else.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Vacant?

49t. A View From The Top Of The World (NR) I gave this song 5 chances and I was never impressed. I do intend to give it more chances, maybe it'll click one day.
49t. A Nightmare To Remember (68th) Much of this song is pretty good, and then Beautiful Agony is many tiers above it. It's too long, though.
47t. Lie (72nd) Really cool song, maybe should be higher for me, and the instrumental rocks.
47t. This Dying Soul (34th) The moment that riff hits and the band comes in...come on! So good! Lots to like, a great part of the 12SS.
46. One Last Time (74th) Yeah, not a SFAM fan. I do plan to give it a spin to see if it finally clicks. Maybe!
44t. Peruvian Skies (95th) Meh, it's aight.
44t. Wait For Sleep (37th) Just beautiful, I still remember the first time hearing it. Really impressed then and just as much now.
43. As I Am (15th) I LOVE this song and I am pretty surprised it is this low. One of my first DT songs so maybe I am biased. The prechorus is one of the coolest parts and the chorus is really cool. The guitar solo ending on chords ringing out is such a little twist.
42. Innocence Faded (16th) This song has grown tremendously on me. It all flows so well, and the instrumental is killer.
41. Disappear (39th) Great song, I don't often go to listen but it's always a great and sad song.
40. Erotomania (46th) Very cool instrumental.
39. Stream Of Consciousness (12th) Best instrumental. Best DT song to play on the bass.
38. Another Day (24th) Not an instrumental, but a top 3 ballad-y type song from DT.
37. At Wit's End (NR) Not familiar enough but I think I heard it the other day and liked it.
36. The Root Of All Evil (18th) Great song, pretty straightforward but it rocks.
35. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream (63rd) I get why people like this more than I do. It's a great song, but in the context of the album, it starts to drag and on its own, it isn't what I look for in DT songs usually, while still liking it.

The thing about the U2 influence on Lifting Shadows, that separates it from something like Disappear or Peruvian Skies in my mind, is that while that guitar delay is very U2-ish and JLB maybe has a little bit of Bono in his delivery, the song itself doesn't really sound like any U2 song and is certainly more ambitious than anything U2 ever wrote (it is maybe a bit like some of the more atmospheric stuff on The Unforgettable Fire I guess). There's definitely an influence there, but DT is more borrowing an element popularized by U2 to do their own thing I think. I always think of the verse and instrumental section as a bit grunge even (think King's X or Alice in Chains).

AWE came in at number 12 for me.  What an amazing song and the outro is up there with JP's best moments.  So good.  Great lyrics too, I've related to them before, James kills it here.

TROAE came in at 33.  This one has aged really well.  Great opener and just a really well written tune.  It nicely picks up on themes from the first two songs but at the same time is its own song also.

LSOAD made it to 26 for me.  What a beautiful song.  The atmosphere, the soundscapes, the performances, just perfect.

TROAE #67
LSOAD #5

Again little surprised am highest with Lifting Shadows but was a no-brainer for me.  I suspect there may be one more high to come one of my favourites from Awake, can't see it as high for others but I do hope so...

I've got way behind again...

As I Am #67 no denying the riffs on this thing. Definitely one of the better songs from ToT, and it could've easily ended up 10 spots higher.

Innocence Faded #58 kind of a weird tune, and listening to it now, maybe it should've been a bit lower. Cheesy chorus and not in a good way. That instrumental section at 4:16 and the way it abruptly cuts in pretty much saves it. I enjoy that bit a lot.

Disappear #95 this really should be something that I enjoy a lot more. It's kinda brooding and there are some nice musical "payoffs" (like the "So I'm moving on..." bit) but it just doesn't stir my gravy.

Erotomania #89 another kinda weird tune (Awake has a few of those, huh?) but one that I really enjoy parts of. As with many a DT song, the saving grace is some awesome instrumental tomfoolery.

Stream of Consciousness #63 a bit overlong for me, but still pretty decent.

Another Day #9 now we're really talking. This is my highest ranking song so far, and I love it. This song always reminds me of a particularly embarrassing moment in my life. When I got into I&W I had just moved back in with my Dad and step Mum for a bit. I was working shift work at the time and I remember having a late breakfast one day, and I was home alone and cranking I&W (this was about 2007, so I was like 24). My brother turned up with this really hot friend of his, who I kinda fancied. I've always been confident in my musical tastes and don't really give a fuck if people don't like what I listen to. However by bro and his friend walked in as the saxophone bit was playing in this song. They both gave me this kind of "wtf are you listening to?" face. I tried to kinda explain DT and definitely came off as the least cool guy she'd spoken to in the last year, at least. It still kinda makes me cringe at times, but fuck it, it's life and I always adored this song, and still do.

At Wit's End #74 kinda shocked that this song has beat out some of the songs that have ranked lower so far. It's a case of the opposite of recency bias for me. It's definitely not a bad song though.

The Root of All Evil #15 another great riff to start with, and the "Take all of me..." section is just perfect. Should be higher.

Lifting Shadows Off a Dream #90 kinda similar to Innocence Faded for me, although not as good.

My ranking so far:

No confirmation from our benevolent overlord, but I'm certain we'll see no more songs from View, WDADU and TA.  Poor TA; quite a pitiful showing.  It beat out WDADU in the last countdown and got 10 songs in the mix, 7 of which finished above 90.  This time, only 3 songs and none above 90.

Ok, then I'm not the highest ranker for any Astonishing song  :lol

Well, we'll see. A couple of Awake songs did VERY GOOD with me and one is not one of the usual suspects.

A double update:

Erotomania - my rank 51. A great instrumental.

Stream of Consciousness - I guess a slight better instrumental as I ranked this at 50. Like others have said it is probably a couple of minutes too long and does overstay its welcome but some really awesome music in this song.

Another Day - Amazing. A brilliant vocal, brilliant solo and just a really special song. I did however only rank it at 15 which I think is because the songs above it on my list have a more epic type quality which I admire slightly more.

At Wits End - Easily the best song on the album, but maybe the consensus list doesn't agree. My rank 49.

The Root of all Evil - my rank 45.

Lifting Shadows off a Dream - another really beautiful track. My rank 42.

Not 100% sure of all the remaining songs so I'm interested to see how it plays out from here.

Time to play catch up!

Barstool Warrior- NR. Decent but nothing special, and I've given it so many chances because I know you guys adore it. Yeah, sadly it's not looking good for the beautiful and far superior Out of Reach, which I had at #38.

Caught in a Web- 42. One of the 11 reasons why Awake is my favorite Dream Theater album. When I first heard it I assumed it would be the next single.

A Nightmare to Remember- 46. This made for such an effective opener on their tour. Probably the loudest crowd I've ever witnessed at a DT concert. But yeah, like most people have said, I wish this song had ended a few minutes sooner.

A View from the Top of the World- NR. Sure, there are a few parts I dig, but this is their only underwhelming epic in my opinion

Lie- 17. I'll never forget the excitement of seeing this video premiere on the Headbanger's Ball. It must have been torturous for the band to cut it off at the 5-minute mark and leave out that absolutely killer ending.

This Dying Soul- 50. Much like The Dark Eternal Night, I find this one heavy, ferocious, and oh so much fun!

One Last Time- 63. So pretty, and I really love how the chorus returns for the album's climax

Peruvian Skies- 14.  I'm so glad that out of all of DT's songs up to that point, this is the one chosen for the duet with Queensryche at the end of the show. An incredible song that deserved a higher ranking here.

Wait for Sleep- 44. Yay, my first match!

As I Am-71. The word "underdog" gets used way too many times, but everything else works for me

Innocence Faded- 30. That last minute and a half is practically orgasmic!

Disappear- 13. It's only appropriate that their darkest, most soul-crushing song gets the #13 spot. Because of how heartbreakingly beautiful it is, I've been hoping for a return to this sound with each new album

Another Day- 51. There are so many albums that remind me of autumn, summer, and Christmastime, but Images and Words is the only one I associate with Spring and Easter for some reason--maybe that's when I heard it for the first time. It has the kind of warmth and rejuvenation that suits the season perfectly, especially Another Day and Surrounded. Love that sax and I wish we could hear more of it, even if it sounds dated.

At Wit's End- 90. Well, this sure is a surprise. I had no idea it was so beloved. I'm listening to it again now and yeah, I can definitely see the appeal. I think I've made a mistake. I'm not a huge fan of that loooooooong outro though.

The Root of All Evil- 16. Now we're talking! One of their all-time greatest choruses and performances by James

Lifting Shadows off a Dream- 31. I just love the atmosphere in this one.

At Wit's End ranked at 61 for me. It's a cool song but kind of middle of the road for DT. My second highest ranked from D/T which is an album I rarely reach for.
The Root of all Evil ended up at 74 on  my ranking. Another middle of the pack song DT has soo many really good songs that to lack that little extra to elevate them to excellent songs.
Lifting Shadows Off a Dream was at 40 in my ranking. Now this is excellent. Beautiful song that has room to breathe. Wonderful vocals.

40. Erotomania (98). Good instrumental track, but not one that I listen to much.
39. Stream of Consciousness (25). The Dance of Eternity was my favourite DT instrumental for quite a while, but now I prefer this one. Best parts for me are the main riff, and the bass about halfway through.
38. Another Day (46). Great ballad, love the sax and the main piano line.
37. At Wit's End (36). Good chorus, and it gets quite emotional during the second half. Not really sure how to feel about the 20 second fadeout, but it's not a big deal.
36. The Root of All Evil (45). This one has grown on me, I like the chorus a lot, and the brief TDS reprisal is also nice.
35. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream (66). My favourite of the lighter tracks from Awake.

A good but not great instrumental IMO, compared to the other DT instrumentals this one ranks near the bottom.

32. Overture 1928

I really like O1928. It's effective and sets up the theme to Scenes perfectly.

Still a bit behind...

At Wit's End (my #16)
is my third favorite Mangini era song. That Journey-ish outro solo is unbelievable good. I just wish that the fadeout wasn't too long, meaning the fadeout effect, not the actual lenght of the outro solo. I always keep adjusting the volume to listen to it clearly until the end of the song!

The Root of All Evil (my #44) is excellent and I love that it isn't too much heavy, its main riff has more a feel of something between heavy metal and hard rock, which is not much common for DT.

Lifting Shadows off a Dream (my #42) is so unique in its feel. And I think it has one of the more creatives drum patterns composed by MP.

Just an observation, I listened to Stream of Conciousness yesterday, after a long time without doing it, and I must say that I didn't think that it dragged in any part at all, really amazing overall!

I remember hearing 6:00 (my #21) for the first time when Awake came out and remember my jaw just dropping on the floor. And I still love it very much! If I had to choose the most emblematic MP song, this is it, no doubt.

The Dance of Eternity (# my 45) is really impressive, but a I see it more as a solo section for the entire album than a proper isolated song.

Now, Overture 1928 (my #40) is amazing and does sound much more like an actual song. Interesting, anyone here knows if, as it was composed originally as a part of Metropolis II demo, this song was a result of pieces taken out the rest of the song (like normally is composed any overture) or if actually this overture originated the other parts of the song ahead (and in the future, of the album)?

6:00 is my favorite DT song. It's prog in a tight package, and just a totally unique song. Amazing drum intro. MP's signature moment in my book. Really great keyboard work throughout by KM, especially the solo, which leads into the gorgeous "the pain inside" section. Then the song just builds up from there. Just an outstanding vocal by JLB as well. Everyone is on fire here. And I love the lyric as well. Just outstanding.

Overture 1928 still always brings me back to the first time I heard SFAM. Really great piece, possibly my favorite part of the album. The Dance of Eternity is right there with it, and it's appropriate for them to be ranked back to back. I kind of have to be in the mood for it these days, but it blew my mind back in the day and I still think it's an awesome piece.

Only the 2 instrumentals made it. O1928 is my favorite DT instrumental by a good amount. TDoE is great too, primarily for being one of the coolest drum compositions ever imagined. 6:00: not a fan of screechy James.

6am. Pretty good. No idea what the samples represent, but instrumentally cool. My 23

DoE. Surprised it made it to my 25, but I do like it, but not as much as...

O1928. My number 7. Just missed out on another higher placer. It's terrific. Sets up SFAM really nicely. My highest placer from SFAM.

6:00 ranked 22 for me. Great opening track for one of the better album.
The Dance of Eternity took the 11th spot on my list. Love this.... complex and interresting with great throwbacks to Met part 1.
Overture 1928.... not ranked? What happened? It should have been around the 50 mark or something.

34. 6:00 (32nd) Close to the consensus. One of the strongest choruses ever?
33. The Dance Of Eternity (45th) Great song, maybe overrated like the album it comes from.
32. Overture 1928 (55th) See above.

34. 6:00

Great song, not the best on Awake but it's quite catchy. And while I do like my job, the lyrics reasonate a lot more now than 15 years ago. With all the competition around, it did not go past 51 for me, 17 positions lower.

33. The Dance Of Eternity

Crazy-ass instrumental and melodic enough to keep my interest. Jordan's rag-time breakdown is iconic, also because it was new at the time. As previously said, instrumentals suffer a lot with me so it's 76th place for me, a whoppin' 43 places down.

32. Overture 1928

"It's effective and sets up the theme to Scenes perfectly." So true. Short, to the point, and goosebumps when we can all sing along to the Metropolis theme live. It's hard to think about this separated from Strange Deja Vu, anyway, great start to their utter masterpiece, but it suffered the exact same fate of Dance: 43 places down 'cause it was my 75. Lulz, I was searching it a bit higher in the list, didn't remember it just got the same result of the other SFAM instrumental, just a step above. But I do really like the song, it's just that songs with vocals will be heavily favored in one-to-one comparisons.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

6:00 was my #29. Good God, those first three tracks on Awake are pretty much just as awesome, all of them are pretty close on my list.

The Dance of eternity was my #8. Kudos to ReaPsTA for getting it right.  :tup

Overture 1928 was my #28. The other day, I wrote about Stream and Erotomania being their top three instrumentals, but I forgot about Overture 1928. That one would be my 3rd favorite Dream Theater instrumental, and Stream would be my second favorite. I needed to correct myself.  :lol

So far I got quite a few songs out of the list, I'm at 22 and I'm 99% it's final, but my top 20 held up well - only two songs from my 1-20 ranking are already out, 17 and 20. It's the 21-30 slot that took a beating, since only my 25, 26 and 27 are yet to come out.

I guess now I have a clearer picture of which songs of mine won't be there - 6:00 is one I could have doubts about, but it's in and so I give up hopes for a Mangini era slow song, of all the other ones, it's pretty obvious which ones won't be there. Unless you all dislike a big epic and love an outtake..........
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

I had 6:00 at #98.
Just sneaked in. This song had the unfortunate fate of being the first DT song I heard after living through Images & Words for over 2 years. It did not live up.

I had The Dance Of Eternity at #34.
This still blows me away.

I had Overture 1928 at #45.
I love this and it's great how it stands on its own so well.

Hey Stadler, your PM inbox is full.

My rankings so far:

1.  The Spirit Carries On (26) - I cannot listen to this song and not tear up... every single time.  I so love this song... so much so that I want an instrumental version of it to be played at my funeral (not joking).  It is such a beautiful message, and the JP solo is the very best he has ever played, IMHO.  Love the LSFNY version the most.  Shocked it wasn't top 10.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.   As I Am (43) - one of my favorite riffs of all-time.  Eat My Ass and Balls!
9.
10.  Lost Not Forgotten (73) - one of my favorite shred pieces.  Wow.
11.  Endless Sacrifice (29) - one of my all-time favorites, and indeed second favorite off of ToT.  Was pumped when they brought this back live.
12.
13.
14.
15.  This Dying Soul (47t) - surprised this didn't get more love.
16.  The Root of All Evil (36) - yes I put three 12-step songs back-to-back-to-back.  I love them.
17.  On the Backs of Angels (56) - really surprised this wasn't higher.  What a great opening tune from a surprisingly strong album
18.  Peruvian Skies (44t) - loved the version they played on the Octavarium world tour - with Wish You Were Here and Wherever I May Roam embedded.  So cool.
19.
20.
21.  Hollow Years (59) - love the Budokan version - what a sick solo from JP.
22.  A Nightmare to Remember (50) - enjoyed when it recently came back but needed MP singing on it.  Beautiful Agony - love it.
23.  Panic Attack (55) - my favorite riff off of 8VM.  On bass, because, well, DT.
24.  Pale Blue Dot (62) - love this song off of D/T.  Surprised it wasn't higher.
25.
26.  Constant Motion (86) - my favorite off of SC.  Love the opening riff.  It's infectious to listen to.
27.
28.  The Enemy Inside (83t) - as you can see, I tend to overrate the singles because I listen to them more often.
29.
30.
31.
32.  The Great Debate (53) - a song about stem cell treatment.  Like the other 30 of them already out there (NOT!).  Love the live version at Bucharest.
33.
34.  Wait for Sleep (44t) - LOVE this on piano.  Maybe because I can sort of play it?  Hard to think of this without LtL.
35.  Outcry (58) - another favorite from ADTOE.
36.
37.  At Wit's End (37) - Hey!  I got one exactly right!  Great tune from D/T.
38.  The Alien (69) - only DT can win a Grammy for a song that doesn't make the DTF Top 50.  Love it.
39.  Overture 1928 (32) - sets the tone for my favorite DT album - if not my favorite overall album of all-time.
40.  Stream of Consciousness (39) - almost nailed this one, too!
41.  Ytse Jam (67) - awesome instrumental
42.
43.
44.  The Silent Man (66) - love the pure acoustic version they did live a few tours ago.
45.  The Mirror (27) - absolutely stand out track on Awake...  interesting that it is liked so much more than Lie (I view these as a duo).
46.  Lie (47t) - Man, I am in sync with this part of the list!
47.  One Last Time (46) - see above!
48.  Caught in a Web (51) - love the Score version.
49.  Another Day (38) - I originally had this about 10 spots higher.  Should have left it there!
50.  6:00 - 34 - moved up on my list after hearing live on the last tour...
51.  Honor Thy Father (71) - often forget about this ToT classic.  Not because it is bad, but just because they have so much incredible material
52.  AVFTTOTW (49) - got it about right.  On the "Epics" list, it is lower.
53.  Barstool Warrior - nearly nailed another one!  Very memorable song from D/T.
54.  Lines in the Sand (28) - probably ranked this much lower than it deserved.
55.
56.  Forsaken (95) - surprised it got such little love.  Sure, lyrics are silly, but melody is beautiful.
57.  The Gift of Music (98) - One of the few songs I voted for off of The Astonishing.  Still holds up well, though.
58.
59.
60.  Space-Dye Vest (30) - this song has grown on me; it was cool to hear it live.  I wonder if comes back so MP can play it live now that they broke the seal...
61.  Sacrificed Sons (63) - almost got this one right, too.  Has dropped in recent years, more due to new great songs.  Years ago it would have been much higher.
62.
63.  Disappear (41) - I wish this song wouldn't disappear from their live repertoire, but is seems to have.
64.  New Millenium (87) - Chapman stick!  One of the highlights of FII for me.
65.  The Ministry of Lost Souls (61) - another that I moved up after their recent live performance of it.
66.  Innocence Faded (42) - loved hearing it at Radio City in 2006 (yes, I was there for Score!)
67.  Never Enough (100) - would fit nicely into MP's return tour, no?
68.  Afterlife (96) - same comment as above re: Score
69.
70.  The Dance of Eternity (33) - if you haven't seen MP play this on Drumeo, stop reading and go now.  He nails it.
71.  Beneath the Surface (64) - in retrospect, this should have been higher.  Love this song, another great off of ADTOE.
72.
73.
74.  Misunderstood (31) - surprised at how high this was ranked.  I guess the whole 1st disc of 6DOIT gets overlooked by the second...
75.  The Shattered Fortress (71) - cool ending to the 12-step suite. Please play it live!!!!
76.
77.  Behind the Veil (89) - might be a nice MM song to tackle
78.
79.  Sleeping Giant (85) - one of the better tracks off of AVFTTOTW
80.  Hell's Kitchen (57) - love the nod to their NY roots; cool instrumental.  Their YYZ?
81.
82.  A Fortune in Lies (78) - had it in about the right spot
83.  Our New World (93) - isn't it blasphemy to say that I liked the Lzzy Hale version better?
84.
85.
86.  A New Beginning (91) - love the solo on this one
87.  Transcending Time (90) - would like to hear it live...
88.
89.
90.  The Bigger Picture (60) - asking to be played by MP.  Just saying...
91.  I Walk Beside You (80) - I sometimes call it I Walk Beside U2 - sounds like they stole the riff from the Edge (who still hasn't found what he is looking for: his bottom 4 strings)
92.  Awaken the Master (81) - Awaken the 8-string!
93.
94.  The Looking Glass (92) - almost nailed this one, too.  A forgotten great track off of DT
95.  Fall Into the Light (72) - solid single from D/T.
96.  The Dark Eternal Night (70).  Never a strong favorite for me.  Should have left the original name - NADS
97.  These Walls (54) - hope to hear this in 2025 (20th anniversary of 8VM!)
98.
99.
100.

40.   Erotomania (#13) agree with all the positive compliments
39.   Stream Of Consciousness (#92) would prefer it about four minutes shorter
38.   Another Day (#21) ‘Better to save the mystery, than surrender to the secret, woah…’ almost spiritual in concert
37.   At Wit's End (#18) got teary eyed at the ‘don’t leave me now’ fadeout on my first listen.  Felt like I was calling out to my Mom....
36.   The Root Of All Evil (#42) solid album opener
35.   Lifting Shadows Off A Dream (#47) nice change of pace on the album
34.   6:00 (#67)
33.   The Dance Of Eternity (#27)
32.   Overture 1928 (#3) the next song on the LP is my #4.
...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

6:00 came in at number 40.  Always really loved this song.  It was a grower but a tremendous opener to a tremendous album.

I had TDOE at number 17.  Just amazing and brilliant in every single way.  What 4 absolute geniuses to come up with this.  It's chaotic as fuck, but still so melodic and memorable.

1928 came in at 31.  Perfect opener and some of the best guitar melodies JP ever produced.
