Premiata Forneria Marconi - Impressioni di Settembre
First impression: Subtle and relaxing

Ok maybe not that subtle and relaxing when listened with headphones :lol. The mix on this is pretty dynamic, but with moments that are just too quiet to appreciate what's going on. Other than that, it's a lovely prog tune, I like the synths here and the beautiful melodies. It's got a nice atmosphere, very warm vibes, and the structure keeps everything fresh. I dig it.

4

Locanda delle Fate - A Volte un Istante di Quiete
First impression: Quite a classic sound to it

This one feels a bit more like standard 70s prog, but quite well written and executed anyway. I love the piano here, and the flute too. It sort of reminds me of Mike Oldfield a bit, mostly on the guitar. A fun little song.

3.75

ariich

Haerts - Hemiplegia
First impression: Grandiose and energetic

Pretty fun pop song! I enjoy the energy here, and the catchy melodies. Might not be super unique, but I like it. Short and to the point.

3.75

Anomalie - Generations
First impression: Pretty cool fusion of genres

An interesting mix of Hip Hop and Jazz sensibilities. I like that it does quite some things despite the short runtime, and with time it's grown on me a bit. Pretty lovely atmosphere too.

4

HOF

Kip Winger - Landslide
First impression: Expected Rock, got... New Age?

This song has an interesting vibe, with the pads and the bird samples, then the vocals and percussion come in. It's got a bit of a New Age vibe, but with some listens, I realize it's mostly just textural. I like the piano here, the chords and little flourishes. The chorus is quite good, prob the best part of the song. Although at first I was underwhelmed, it has grown on me quite a bit. I can certainly see why Tim loves his former band ;D

4

Kip Winger - Broken Open
First impression: Expected a ballad, got... Rock?

This one is similar to the other track, but with Rock instrumentation, and a bit more energy. I quite like the bass here, wished it was more prominent in the song. Chorus is nice, if a bit on the generic side. This is a pretty fine tune, but to me doesn't feel as inventive as Landslide.

3.5

Crow

Hakushi Hasegawa - Desert
First impression: Quite chaotic and... fun?

Hmnnnn. The chaotic nature of this is quite controlled and fun, zig and zagging quite a bit, from the calm rhodes to the breakcore drumming. It might be a bit too intense for me at times, but I still dig it.

4

t+pazolite - KABOOOOOM!!!!
First impression: What even is this

This is what happens when you let chronically online people make music :neverusethis:. I quite like the silly nature of this song, and I don't mind the cow sample at all, but I just fucking hate the awful MLG Air Horns here, interrupting what seemed a beautiful calm segment. That's what prevents me from rating this any higher, sorry.

3.5

Buddyhunter1

Boucle Infinie - 雨
First impression: Hypnotic

Hmnnn this one is odd, on the one hand I quite dig the atmosphere and sounds here, they're quite hypnotic - in particular I love the use of piano with the synths. On the other, it does feel more like a soundtrack, great background music for a sort of Cyberpunk movie or game. Hell that piano at times reminds me of the one in Signalis' OST. It doesn't feel too long despite being 9 mins long, and while I enjoy it quite a bit, I'm left wanting more.

3.75

Mutoid Man - Setting Sun
First impression: Heavy-ass riffs, will they stick tho?

I see there's some Converge connection here, cool. This is a nice Stoner Metal song, with heavy riffs and fun drumming. Vocal style and the melodies reminds me of Baroness a bit, which I've never been able to get into. Yeah it's a cool track, not the most original for its genre, but it's quite well executed.

3.5

twosuitsluke

Coheed and Cambria - Mother Superior
First impression: Quite different to what I had heard from them

Definitely more interesting than the more Alt Rock songs that I remember checking out or you playing in deepcuts. I like the inclusion of piano in the quieter segments, and the strings, they're paired well with the guitars. I'm still not convinced this band is for me, it just has that 2000s 'Murican Alt Rock sound that's never resonated with me personally, but this song is quite good for what I can tell.

3.75

Prize Fighter Inferno - The Going Price for Home
First impression: A little better than last time, I think

I was sent another song of theirs in a previous round, and it was alright. This one is marginally better I think. While I enjoy the electronic sound and the synths, it's the vocals that are just... sort of boring, sorry :lol. Not very memorable melodies to me, and he does the same style throughout the whole track. Then it just ends on a fade out.

3.25

Puppies

Alithia - Thirteen Revelations
First impression: A bit too long for what it has to offer

Hmnnnn this is tough, because I like the sounds presented here quite a bit, the synths in particular are great and the uuhhhh weird string instrument. But it's the execution that falls flat for me - it just feels like another Modern Prog song with some Post-Rock leanings, two genres I struggle with quite a bit, oops. Also, it takes like 8 mins to get somewhere actually interesting. I wouldn't say it's a boring track at all, but I don't feel this has enough ideas to justify the 12 mins it lasts.

3.25

The Goo Goo Dolls - Name
First impression: Kinda reminds me of early childhood

Ah some mid 90s Alt Rock ballad, reminds me of my very early days as a kid. It's a lovely little track, with warm vibes, and sad lyrics. I quite enjoy the more upbeat instrumental section at 3:20, wished this tune had a bit more of that. It's not the most original song of its style, but it's quite well-written, and, as Tim would say, easy on the ears.

3.5

Lizzo

shedfromthebody - Fascia
First impression: Not quite generic, but not that engaging either

While this track has a cool atmosphere and some ok riffs, it just... doesn't do that much for me. The melodies are sort of boring and the structure of the song doesn't help much. It feels a bit one-dimensional to me. I dunno, I wasn't caught by it.

3

Telepopmusik - Love Can Damage Your Health
First impression: A sound closer to my tastes, nice

Some nice Downtempo music to relax and study to. Samples of... spy movies I think? Anyway, a cool song with some Trip hop vibes, that sort of goes in a different direction for the last minute, and I'd have loved that section to be the whole song. It's certainly more original and lovely than what came before it.

Thanks for playing Lizzo! Albeit we haven't always been aligned in tastes, you've sent me some great stuff I'll surely check out soon. Hope to have you on board next time.

HOF and Crow, you're on a deathmatch now! As with the previous one, you have 48 hs to send me a pair of tracks like usual, following the theme of "Passion" and its opposite. The best of both submissions gets to stay for another round.

For the rest of you meatdogs, feel free to start sending for round 6.

That Boucle Infinite EP is a nice listen - short but sweet with lots of cool atmospheric synthwave. Not sure if Mutoid Man would really be your thing but I figured you'd at least enjoy that song!

Man, I had the third highest score this round, but suddenly I’m on the verge of elimination! Closer to the top spot than before the round too I guess if I want to look on the bright side. Not sure what I had lined up for the next round. Hope it’s something good!

Oh, I've got to send something for "passion." Hmmm.

Hmm, I thought the structure of "Fascia" was one of the stronger points, with three fairly distinctive sections with regard to meter and feel throughout.  Oh well.

That last section of "Love Can Damage Your Health" actually is from another song, it's a sort of lo-fi jazz-ish restatement of "Breathe" from earlier in the album, which is probably their most well-known song (it was briefly a thing in the early 00s, but I haven't heard much about them in many years now).  Definitely check that one if their sound interests you, it just seemed too straightforward for a roulette (but "Hemiplegia" that ariich stole from me and outscored me with :p is that way too, so you just never know).

But overall, like in Crow's roulette, I was worried our tastes just wouldn't line up at all (I guess they still kind of don't outside of a few certain subgenres and a number of artists), so I'm glad I did as decently as I did and a few songs worked.  And I managed to last four songs past where I thought it would end for me.

I'll probably also send my shelved initial idea for last round after the roulette.
