The Whirlwind vs The Similitude of a Dream
« on: November 13, 2023, 12:27:29 PM »
Felt like a good time for this poll.

Note that if you are someone who thinks this Neal album or that Neal album is better than one or both of these, that is fine, but I am just interested in seeing which of these two is preferred by the fans here.

Gun to my head, I would probably say The Similitude..., but it is super close.

The Whirlwind because it’s only 1 disc and I’ve actually been able to get through it.

I have tragically been unable to connect with either.

The Whirlwind, but Similitude is fantastic.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Haven't revisited either in a while, but The Whirlwind wins for me :tup
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."

Similitude is all kinds of gorgeous, but I really struggle to name more than 20 albums I love more than The Whirlwind.

Whirlwind.

Similitude never connected with me but I think the follow-up is fantastic and much better.

Whirlwind, but it’s close

The more I think about it, it’s not that close. Similitude kinda meanders a bit in the second half. I wouldn’t change a single note of the Whirlwind.

The Whirlwind hands down. I enjoy TSOAD a lot, but I rarely revisit it or it's sequel (and would rather listen to TGE or I&D).

I just have a lot of memories and nostalgia for TW - keeping up with the rumors and updates from Neal and Mike, anticipating the arrival of the album, stumbling upon a sound-marked leak with voice overs in the middle of each track, and then endlessly spinning the main album throughout the remainder of 2009 after it released.

In terms of a highly anticipated album, TW ranks pretty high on my list. The band had been on a hiatus since 2003 and I never thought they'd ever return, so getting another Transatlantic album felt like a miracle to me. I've rewatched the making-of documentary at least a dozen times, and I enjoy it every time.

There's just a lot of love for TW and it's surrounding hype, both the build-up and release, that makes it very special for me. I just never got that for TSOAD, and that came out at a time where Neal had done many more long concept albums with Mike and Randy. It's good, yes, but only because it was expected to be good. I like the contributions from Bill and Eric as well, but there's just a certain magic with Neal, Mike, Roine, and Pete, who is a BEAST on TW, and the album VIP.

Whirlwind ... and wow, it's beating TSOA like a government mule!

The more I think about it, it’s not that close. Similitude kinda meanders a bit in the second half. I wouldn’t change a single note of the Whirlwind.

Sums it up nicely for me.

I have a long day of traveling between two project sites tomorrow....gonna spin both of these as it's been a while since I listened to them both all the way through.

It won't affect my vote though.

Both of these:
The Whirlwind, but Similitude is fantastic.
The more I think about it, it’s not that close. Similitude kinda meanders a bit in the second half. I wouldn’t change a single note of the Whirlwind.

Since they are similar, I will mention that if you substituted TGE for Similitude, it would be a lot closer for me, but The Whirlwind would still win.  The Whirlwind is a top all-time album, so it's hard to beat.

Similitude for me is beyond perfect.

Whirlwind has section's i skip. but i still really love it make no mistake but.

Rose Colored Glasses just goes on.......and on..........and on........and on.  And the finale has more false finishes than LOTR.

Too funny, that's totally true. Personally I like that with The Whirlwind because it's like you get three times your money's worth. Usually you only get one epic ending but in this case it's multiple. Love it!

I listen to "The Whirlwind" album at least once a month. Additionally, on the anniversary of its release, I make it a point to play "The Whirlwind Live From Shepherd's Bush Empire, London Tour" each year.

Because of this thread (thanks, Kev) I watched the Shepherd's Bush DVD after dinner last night. Crazy good performance! And watching it reiterated why I think MP is the most entertaining drummer I've had the privilege to watch. Engaging, smiling, energetic, dynamic, insane capabilities ( little things like quickly reaching up to swing the mic boom overhead and never flubbing his vocals or missing a fill)...the man was created to play the drums and I still get an overwhelming sense of joy watching him.

I prefer Similitude. The Whirlwind is good, but I prefer the remaining Transatlantic albums. However, Similitude might be the best prog album Neal did in the last decade.

25-16 now.  See, it's closer than the early results showed.  The West Coasters just hadn't had their votes counted yet. :P
