Favorite Rush Era Poll
« on: November 05, 2023, 08:27:47 AM »
I searched and didn’t see another poll like this, but I’m sure there is one back there somewhere. Pretty obvious question, and I’m sure I know which will win. I’m just curious how many vote for the least popular era (Presto-T4E), because I think that’s my favorite.  Have at it!

Signals/Grace Under Pressure/Power Windows/Hold Your Fire

These are the albums I listen to the most in the recent years, to be completely honest. Even Hold Your Fire gets better as time goes by.

This will be lopsided, but I voted for the era with Power Windows.  :hat :hat

(it's also the era I listen to the most nowadays)

Even with my great love of Power Windows, I have to give the nod to the classic era. That’s got to be one of the best 4 album runs ever.

Might be interesting to see what people would have voted for if Sector 2 wasn't an option (which is what I went with). Sector 3 would be a very close second, but after that...

Sector 2
Sector 3
.
Sector 1
.
.
.
Sector 4 / Last Three Albums

I don't dislike latter day Rush, but I definitely don't reach for them as much if I want a Rush fix.

And I ranked five eras - the four sectors and their final 3 albums, with the last two tied indicated by the "/". What's confusing?  :-\

2, and it is not even close. I'd be content to lump in 2112 with that era, and consider those the only 5 Rush albums I'll ever need.

Signals through Hold Your Fire for me, though I’d probably extend that period one more album through Presto as that span includes my top 4 Rush albums (Power Windows, Signals, Presto, p/g).

Sector 2 is unparalleled, but I find myself loving 1 and 3 (career runs for 90% of any other music act) every year more. I must admit I am not very familiar with 4.

As much love as the "synth era" gets, and even with the added boost of Signals, I'm confident that the late '70s/early '80s era is going to win this in a landslide, and I expect that the eras other than these two will get very few votes.

My ranking would be

1. Kings through Pictures
2. Rush through 2112
3. Presto through T4E (despite the existence of RTB)
4. VT through CA
5. Signals through HYF (poor Signals)

P.S.  I know someone explained the "sector" thing a while back, I have no recollection what it means.

I’d rank them this way:

1: Signals - Hold Your Fire
2: Presto - Test for Echo
3. A Farewell to Kings - Moving Pictures
4. Vapor Trails - Clockwork Angels
5. Rush - 2112

P.S.  I know someone explained the "sector" thing a while back, I have no recollection what it means.

The band re-issued their first twelve studio/three live albums in three box sets titled "Sectors". Since then, many fans have come to refer to these eras as their Sectors, and even lumping their Presto-to-Different-Stages era as "Sector 4".

I wonder how different the poll would be if Moving Pictures was moved into "the synth sector".  To me there's a bigger change in sound between Permanent Waves and MP than there is between MP and Signals.  Those early-mid 80s albums are my favorite of theirs though.  Geddy's voice becomes less abrasive, and his synth work is fantastic.

I do think of Moving Pictures is the first “synth” Rush album, but it is more or less half way between Permanent Waves and Signals. There’s a pretty clear progression in the sound of the band from album to album there.
