Round 2 Results!

Volbeat – Seal the Deal   TAC     9.2   

When the chorus comes in, it takes what's already a fantastic song and just becomes elite. This song would be the 10 from the last roulette. The energy is all there and it makes me want more.

Volbeat – The Devil's Bleeding Crown   faizoff   8.8   

So I guess I like Volbeat I also liked this song a ton and it's pretty much what I said in TAC's blurb. I liked Seal the Deal a bit more because of the build-up to the chorus and the release it gave.

Nth Ascension – So, That Was the Apocalypse   jingle   8.7   

Sometimes, we all need a nice instrumental to take the edge off. Add in some chunky organ riffs and (I think) on the low end, and it's just a fun song to listen to. You might be the instrumental king of roulettes, jingle dot man.

Djelmash – Incredible       Litho    8.6   

This song stands out for its sound alone. The music is tight in all facets. The vocals have a lot of raw emotion, which is what I was trying to say in my first impression. It is kind of otherworldly and grand, while feeling really honest in the lyrics.

An Abstract Illusion – Drop This Planet of Dust       ariich   8.6   

The intro for this is full of some moments where I go "Wow, that just sounds cool." There is a lot of atmosphere here among the metal, and it is a really good balance.

DGM – Portraits            romdrums   8.6   

Yeah, this sounds like DT in a way that isn't trying to rip them off, just more influenced by them. I dug a ton of this, the instrumentation was on top of the game and the vocals were good too.

Bent Knee – Leak Water         King   8.5   

Between the different sections, melodies, and lyrics, this song is the most original thing I think I have gotten among both roulettes. That doesn't mean it gets the most points necessarily, but I wanted to point out that that alone stuck out. I like this a lot, it was an interesting ride every time I listened.


Anciients – Incantations   lonestar   8.5   

The intro is the sorta stuff I really dig. You know it's leading somewhere and there is nice build-up, into the full band playing in this case. It sounds kinda Mastodon-ish with the clean vocals, which I really liked. Harsh vocals were fine, and this song is great.

The Hotelier – Soft Animal   tomislav   8.4   

I dig the indie sound on this, I some Brand New songs and this gave me some of the same feelings. This genre isn't always my first choice, but when I find songs I like in the indie world, man do I like them a ton. This song is there, I like it a lot.

The Cult – Dance the Night   Stadler   8.3   

Fun song, it's simple and easy to listen to, and we need songs like that sometimes. I like a lot of the different little things the guitars are doing on the verses and chorus, this feels like a bunch of people having fun writing a rock song. Nothing groundbreaking, but a jamming good time.

Jinjer – I Speak Astronomy   Puppies   8.3   

First, really cool song title. The song is above average, I like what the guitars add to the overall mood, kind of like what Mastodon do on The Hunter. The woman is a great singer, she feels perfect for the song.

The Black Queen - Ice to Never   sacul      8.3   

This is a cool song, I dug the electronic sort of vibe the drummings and synth provided. Well-written and well-sung song.

Alter Bridge – The Last Hero        vmads     8.2   

I like a few Alter Bridge songs, specifically Blackbird, Before Tomorrow Comes, and Metalingus. This song isn't quite at the level of these songs, but it's still above average while definitely sounding like Alter Bridge. I didn't mind it when it was on, but it also felt a little bloated toward the end. Nice song overall.

Mandroid Echostar – Hypnos      luke     8.1   

It's a good song but nothing that sticks out to me. It sounds nice but also sounds like The Dear Hunter or Coheed to me, which are two bands that are very hit or miss for me.

This isn't my full style. It's interesting enough that I wanted to see what it was about every time it came on, and it certainly sounds nice and not bad, it just doesn't fit in my wheelhouse so I don't know if I would ever rank it higher than this.

So with that Anciients album, I was limited by the max time allowed...while the whole album is solid as fuck, hands down the two best songs, Ibex Eye and Buried in Sand are the strongest. I highly advise spinning the whole album, they're so good.

So this was sort of a stealth second try for an artist I sent last roulette, David Maxim Micic.  On the track you heard last time, "Cry", it was written by David, and Aleksandra Djelmas (Djelmash) did the vocals in the middle section, with Vladimir Lalić doing the vocals you didn't like as much near the end (and also nearer the beginning).  On "Incredible", this time Aleksandra wrote it and did all the vocals and keyboards, with David doing the guitars/bass, programming and production.  Good to see it worked better this time.  Aleksandra and David's best work together is Destiny Potato's LUN, which unfortunately comes a year before the timeframe for the roulette, 2014, but is definitely worth investigating.
