Metro's Gourmet Roulette - AND THE WINNER IS...
« on: October 22, 2023, 07:57:38 PM »

Welcome to my very first roulette!
After listening to pretty much nothing but Devin Townsend for most of this year, I am ready, eager, and slightly desperate to find some new music.
I figured since I’ve been on this place for close to 13 years, it’s about time I did one of these.
I’ve never hosted a roulette before, or even participated in one. But I've done my research and some stalking on the some of the recent roulettes, so hopefully I know what i'm doing.
This will not be a disaster. Because I said so.

Format

The roulette will be structured like a 5-course meal. Consisting of:

1. Hors d’oeuvre
2. Appetizer
3. Salad
4. Main Course
5. Dessert
+ a Wine Pairing for each course.

- Every course, you will submit two songs.
The first song, your Main Entry, will be given a score 1-10
The other song will be your Wine Pairing. Something to compliment your Main Entry. These songs will be given a score 1-5
The combined total of both scores will be your overall score for each round.

- To make this a little more interesting, I'm gonna have you submit your songs anonymously through a Google Form.
This form will be sent out to participants via DM at the start of each round. I’ll try to guess who submitted what during hangman.
If it matters to anyone, the Google form doesn’t require a Google account, or any personal information whatsoever. Totally anonymous.
If it ends up being a disaster, we’ll scrap that idea after round 1, and never speak of it again.  :lol

- Your songs do not have to be food-themed.

Courses

The criteria for your Main Entry will be different each round, listed below.

Course 1 - Hors d’oeuvre

Something light to start off with
Give me a short, simple song
Any style
No instrumentals
4 minutes max

Course 2 - Appetizer

Something to whet my appetite
Give me a song with a bit more substance
Any style
No instrumentals
10 minutes max

Course 3 - Salad

Something natural and simple, like a salad
Give me something stripped-down, like an acoustic song or a piano ballad. Doesn’t have to be a ballad, but it must be something with minimal instrumentation
Instrumentals welcome, but not required
10 minutes max.

Course 4 - Main Course

The pièce de résistance
Give me an epic
The song has to be one combined track. So, songs like SDOIT and The Whirlwind (both of which are obviously banned) that are considered one song or a suite but split up into multiple tracks are NOT eligible
No instrumentals
Minimum of 15 minutes, maximum of 40 minutes.

Course 5 - Dessert

The finale. Something sweet to end the night
Give me a closing track from an album
Any style
No instrumentals
20 minutes max

The criteria for your Wine Pairing will be the same every round:

Wine Pairing:

Similar in style to your Main Entry
Can be from the same artist as your Main Entry, but doesn’t have to be
Instrumentals welcome, but not required
5 minutes max

SECRET MENU

There are 10 artists that are on the “Secret Menu”. These are artists that I know of, but do not know their music.
If you submit a song from one of these artists, you will receive an additional 3 points to your overall score for that round, even if I don’t like the song.
These artists will remain a secret until when/if they come up, but they are known on this forum.
Once an artist is revealed, they are banned from the rest of the game.
If both of your songs happen to be from artists on the secret menu, you still only get 3 bonus points for that round.

1. Ulver
2. Winger
3. Kamelot
4. IQ
5. Amorphis
6. Helloween
7. Joy Division
8. Thrice
9. Tori Amos
10. Wu-Tang Clan

Taste

I’m open to literally anything. The whole point of this is to discover new music.
Most of what I listen to is prog and metal, but I’ll give anything a chance. I’m hoping people don’t just send more prog and metal. I’m intentionally keeping the criteria for some of these rounds pretty open to hopefully get a variety of music.
You've got a weird song you’ve been afraid to submit to other roulettes? Send it my way. Nothing is off limits, except for what’s on the banned list, and as long as it fits in the criteria for that round.
I don't mind harsh vocals.
I don’t mind poppy stuff.
I don’t mind extremely heavy stuff.
I don’t mind electronic music.
I don’t mind weird/ambient/experimental shit.
I don’t mind music in other languages.
I think Hamilton is overrated.
I am not allergic to anything.
I really don’t like olives. You send me anything with olives, I will send it back.

Just checking ... the main course has to be a minimum of 20 minutes, or is that just a suggestion?

Ok, this one sounds fun. Challenge might be finding a 20 minute song not on your band list, but I think I can swing it if you’ll have me.

Seems this should have been the format for RJ's roulette.   :lol

The whole point of this is to discover new music.
Most of what I listen to is prog and metal, but I’ll give anything a chance. I’m hoping people don’t just send more prog and metal.

I find these criteria to strongly be at odds with each other.  The presence of the secret menu means that the optimal strategy is just to send you the most popular prog and metal bands on DTF in hopes that you'll land on one of those artists.  You're incentivizing getting a whole lot of what you say you're hoping you won't just get a steady diet of.  I'll play regardless, but it leaves me torn which direction to go at the moment.

Certainly most of what this forum listens to is prog and metal, but all I mean is that they're artists that people (myself included) have heard of. Not just prog or metal bands, and not just some random ultra-obscure bands that no one has heard of that no one here could possibly ever guess.

Ok, fair enough.  So it could be like, Taylor Swift and the Rolling Stones, or something like that.  It then discourages sending unfamiliar bands, but they could be a bit broader stylistically.

It could be! But I hope no one would send either of those artists :lol

Maybe because I've never participated in one of these before, I don't think about this from a strategy POV. I'm just in it for the music. I want people to send what they want, and if it happens to be from one of a handful of artists, you get a little extra bonus points. Not enough to break the game or tip the scales significantly in anyone's favor, but just something extra to keep it interesting.
But after thinking about it, I am gonna reduce it to just 5 artists on the Secret Menu.

But after thinking about it, I am gonna reduce it to just 5 artists n the Secret Menu.

There are two main types of participants/strategies.  One is just to send personal all-time favorites or current infatuations regardless of who is hosting and whether it might be something they'd like.  These people generally don't care as much how they score.  Not that they aren't hoping what they send will do well, just that they're ideally realizing that tastes aren't always a match, but want to test the waters more and see if any of their quirky favorites connect with you, knowing that some probably won't.  They view roulettes as more of a social experiment and compatibility discovery process.

The other is people who try and analyze based on any available clues things they suspect you might like or that seem to be gaps in your collection and send what they think might score the most.  They're generally looking to take advantage of whatever might give them a leg up on the competition.  They view roulettes as more of a game.

I mostly tend towards the latter strategy.

20 minutes minimum is a bit high for the main course, especially considering all other rounds have a 10 minute maximum, meaning any song between 11 and 19 minutes is impossible to send anywhere in the roulette. :lol

Thankfully though I do have a 20 minute song in mind, so I'm good even if you keep the rules the same.

That's a good point! I could make the Final round 20 minutes max, how does that sound?

I wouldn't mind either way, though as this is your first roulette I think 20 minutes max would be good for your sake. :lol

I certainly have way more choices and interesting songs in the 10-20 range.  I can find something 20+ if I have to, but that's definitely not my specialty.

Pretty sure I have my hors d'oeuvre and wine pairing picked out for the first round, but I guess I can't send until the form comes to us.

Oh, and do you have any restrictions or preferences on format?  Spotify, Youtube, MP3, etc.

Yeah I’ll send the form out Friday.
And I’m an Apple Music guy, but Spotify and YouTube links are fine.

I can't send King Gizzy as you are already used to fine dining. Either way, you can expect more culinary delights from me.

This was pretty much my observation as well, and hence the reason for my question. I’m good with any setup, but there’s  a LOT of great music between 10:00 and 19:59.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".
