Debut albums that open with side-length epics.
« on: October 07, 2023, 03:36:49 PM »
I was reminded earlier today that today is the 20th anniversary of the debut album from The Tangent, 2003's The Music That Died Alone, and that got me thinking...

What are some other debut albums that open with side-length (or longer) epics? The next one that came to mind was IQ's debut, Tales From The Lush Attic, which opens with the near twenty minute "The Last Human Gateway".

There's also Transatlantic's debut SMPTe and the mega epic "All Of The Above". And although it's a bit short for a side-length epic, the opening title track for Spock's Beard's debut The Light might count as well.

What others can you think of? It's pretty ballsy to debut with a song that takes up a whole side of vinyl, having your listener dedicate around twenty minutes for the first song, but it's probably a risk well taken.

-Marc.
