dream theater's most brazilian album? 🇧🇷
« on: October 03, 2023, 08:37:39 AM »
i was chatting with my drummer friend who's from brazil yesterday, and we got into an interesting discussion about dream theater and how their music has some definite brazilian vibes in certain albums. i didn't really see it at first but the more he was going on about it, the more i was convinced. i mean, it's amazing how this band can blend prog and metal with different influences.

anyway, i've been pondering the thread title, and for me it's gotta be images and words. i know it's not as obvious as, let's say, some of their more recent stuff, but hear me out. that album, it's like a tasty musical caipirinha, mixing the smooth rhythms and catchy melodies. i mean, pull me under and another day are like bossa nova and samba hidden in the midst of the prog metal complexity, you feel me? that said, he was of the opinion stream of consciousness has some latin and brazilian rhythmic elements in the drumming and percussion.

what do you all think? what's your pick for dream theater's most brazilian album? amo todos voces :metal

I have never thought that any Dream Theater album could be described as "Brazilian" (to any degree).

I always thought Andreas Kisser, from Sepultura, kinda looks like JP.

yeah, i totally see the resemblance between andreas kisser and john petrucci! it's like they could be twin brothers separated at birth or something. maybe john petrucci's secret brazilian heritage might explain the subtle brazilian elements hidden in dream theater's music :lol isso não seria hilário :rollin

It is I&W, because they were all clean shaven at the time.

probably the closest would be the Live In Santiago.

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Because clearly "the most Brazilian" is a description that is meaningful to so many people out there.

The bass line in in the instrumental section of In the Name of God has a Latin-sounding section, but I don't know that I'd specifically call it "Brazilian".

Acho que não. Você esta pensando sobre Angra ou Sepultura, não Dream Theater.   :lol
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

That and there's some kind of flamenco guitar/percussion in Learning to Live. I think that's all the latin vibes I can hear in DT music - for what I remember - and 0% of brazilian music. But, the other way round, Sepultura and Angra are very influenced by prog metal these days (and still have a lot of brazilian sounds).
And, as a brazilian, all that clean shaved talk I think isn't a fair fame! ;D

To work this out, we'll have to know how manscaped each member was during the recording of each album.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

This is where someone posts a rant about how you used to be able to find these things out back when MP was in the band, but not anymore.

You wanna give us a description of what you mean by Brazilian? Because literally, all of their music sounds American. Or maybe Canadian when they go full Rush inspired (like Looking Glass)
Let's go with a P for Deadeye has premature alphabetejaculation.

Stream of Consciousness definitely has some Brazilian vibes in it. Hollow years, the solo section in Solitary Shell, and maybe even In the Presence of Enemies pt 1.
