New EP kicks ass. I'm a little disappointed Gigglebutton is under two minutes but the three proper songs are all great and better than most of the stuff from Terraformer.

Excellent EP as usual for them. I think Gigglebutton is great as it is!
Anyone knows if the drummer is already the new one?

Nope - credits are on Bandcamp. I don't think she left until after Soul Diver was released.

Oooh didn't even know they had a new release, very sweet. And just in time for me to get my head around it before seeing them next week in my triumphant return to live shows as they open for Intervals.

Still debating whether to go see them - they're always fun live though Intervals isn't all that interesting to me. Might be worth it though!

Outstanding show last night, the new members fit into the band seamlessly, and they sounded excellent. Really had the mostly college kid crowd jumping, and even had a pit inspired by the heavier opening bands.

Intervals was fucking amazing. Just amazing.

They fucking killed it tonight. Amazing show, despite the short set. The crowd was so energetic; probably the best crowd I’ve been a part of, or at least top three.

Cryptodira was pretty great too. Wasn’t really feeling Intervals so I left a few songs into their set.

Thank You Scientist just shared this band/album on their socials...

https://open.spotify.com/album/4K4Yk592WJizyzbuXKkEc2?si=y0JVFUXFQr2usGevvn2rkQ&utm_source=copy-link

A six-piece band from Brooklyn, CIVILIANS blends together hard rock, jazz, electronic, and funk music in various and disturbing ways, incorporating full horn section blasts, heavy grooves, psychedelic effects, and multiple audience members experiencing acid flashbacks. The band makes orchestrated left turns that puts the audience at the edge of their seat and heavy riffs and grooves that get them off (their seat). CIVILIANS just released their EP “Look Cool!” and also has a musical called “ALL THE BUGS ARE HUGE!!!” available online.

Trumpet, Vocals / Joe Gullace
Trombone / Joonas Lemetyinen
Saxophone, EWI / Alex Blade Silver
Guitar, Vocals / Tom McCaffrey
Bass / Osei Kweku
Drums / Josh Plath

Definitely for fans of the band, it's pretty darn good.

Saw them in Providence tonight! Awesome setlist, and they played one new song from the album they're currently working on. Sounded like a pretty typical hard rocker for them, but with a swung groove. Sal was unfortunately dealing with technical issues and spent most of the show fiddling with his in-ear monitors. He skipped a lot of his lines and seemed pretty out of it, but the rest of the band was on fire as usual. They busted out Rube Goldberg Variations, easily their best instrumental, and that was definitely a highlight. :hat

Per the bands Facebook, the lead singer has left the band due to family responsibilities.  I'll admit that the vocals were the weak link to me, but it's always tough for a band you love to switch vocalists. There's nothing that changes the sound of a band more. He was fun to watch live for sure.

The news sucks even more when you like the singer. He was actually one of the most original aspects of the band's sound to me, I absolutely love the sound of his voice. It's going to be tough replacing someone that authentic.

Man that sucks. Great singer and a great frontman.
I saw them here in Richmond every year from 2016-19. In 2017, he was having issues with his monitors, so for the last song he said "fuck it" and came into the pit to sing the last song with the crowd. Gonna be hard to replace him, but it seems to me like TYS is gonna be one of those bands with an always changing lineup.

Aww man...I'm with Metropolaris...I really dig his voice and think he's one of the unique sides of the band, and yeah, he's just amazing live. He did the same thing when I saw them open for Haken, come down and rock out with the crowd. Just a great showman.

Definitely a bummer, I love his vocals, but not a shock. I only caught the tail end of their set opening for BtBaM this past July but Sal was talking about how he was drunk because he missed his family and was looking forward to the tour being over  :(

Yea I totally get it. No judgment of those parents that who have jobs that keep from being with their families, but I couldn’t do it. I was still working in care doing overnight shifts when my boy was born. My wife really struggled and being away from my wife and kid for up to 36 hours at a time was way too much for me. I started looking for a 9-5 so I could be home with them every night, within about a month of him being born.

I hope Sal can focus on his family and that the band can find a worthy replacement.

Yeah this sucks, especially the cancelled shows (one of which I was going to see…), but not entirely surprising. The last few times I saw them he definitely looked like the least happy guy on the stage.

I was planning on seeing them in Maine at a bowling alley in November. That was going to be a unique experience.

Yea I saw them twice in the last year and both times he remarked about missing his family and looking forward to going home. I loved his voice and think he actually made them stand out in a lot of ways, gonna be a tough replacement.

I saw Caligula’s Horse at a bowling alley, for like £15. Man, that was a good show.

I honestly never loved his vocals, but grew somewhat used to them. I would not call them exactly *highly original* per he always sounded A LOT like Claudio Sanchez (or Joey Eppard to a degree).

I actually think their last EP might be my favorite thing they ever did. I do wonder if they might either become an instrumental band, or get someone who has a little differemt style. Granted, if they do find a new singer and decide to play live, the new singer will need to be able sing his parts. Which would suggest like Todd La Torre or Jon Davison, the new singer would likely need to be somewhat similar (or be able to sing those parts).

That'd be lame.

As great as this band is (especially live), it's kinda unfortunate that they're still a revolving door of musicians despite being around for over a decade. At this point I'm pretty sure Tom Monda is the only member who's guaranteed to never get replaced (he's the last founding member left, too).

...he always sounded A LOT like Claudio Sanchez...

I read Coheed and Cambria comparisons before and I never understood why they seem so similar to some people. Sanchez goes for an emo delivery (a word I don't use as a derogatory term) which I never felt in Thank you Scientist.

Sucks he's leaving.  His voice is unique and actually worked with the music of this band.  Not surprised though.

That's a real shame.  I wasn't necessarily a huge fan of his voice but I did mostly like it and I thought it worked really well with their music.

seeing this thread bumped earlier made me check this out. i didn't super love it - but it wasn't bad and i didn't hate it.

most importantly it was probably my first new music rec from this forum, so thanks for posting about it, i wouldn't have heard of them otherwise. i'm gonna follow them and see what else they come up with in the future!

I tend to agree with both of the bolded statements.

I sincerely hope they don't turn into an instrumental band. That would completely kill my interest.
