Twosuitsluke: Current Events

This is like driving by an accident and covering your eyes, yet you still peak through your fingers.

Horrendous-Neon Leviathan  8.5
Underneath whatever you call these vocals lies a fucking wicked track.

Sulpher Aeon-Seven Crowns And Seven Seals 7.8
This creepy crawly creature of a song just about becomes a butterfly. Just about.

Stoned Jesus-Thoughts And Prayers  8.3
Really cool track that hit the spot after what came before it.

This Horrendous tune slaps. Once I could wrap my head around the whacked vocals, underneath is a pounding fucking thing. I want to check this out. Not sure if the vocals will ultimately be an obstacle. The Sulpher Aeon was like a split song for me. For the most part, it’s too brooding and the harsh vocals I don’t love. But in the final third, it really starts to bloom. Clean vocals, and a really nice outro solo. The Stoned Jesus doesn’t fit either song at all, but somehow it works. The groovy has a kind of haunting vibe to it, and it helps blend the song with what came before it.

Luke, I love having you in my roulettes. Your sense of humor really cracks me up.

I'll take it! Glad you liked all these. Definitely check out Horrendous, it's my second fave death metal release of the year. I appreciate what you said about Sulpher Aeon, and I kinda agree. I love the second half of the song and feel it's worth the wait. Lastly, Stoned Jesus. After the success of Witchcraft earlier in the roulette I had to shoehorn this in, as I feel its very similar.

I bolded the bottom bit. Thanks for having me and I take THIS as the real win. Congrats me.

I'm glad you liked the most of my EP :tup
That singer is not in Chaos Addict anymore, sadly. Actually, don't know where he is and if he sings at all. He was a finalist in the Croatian version of Idol in 2009. Most know of him here but probably don't know about his metal background.
Dino Jelusic (from Jelusick) will be one of the coaches in this year's The Voice in Croatia  3/4 coaches this year are (somewhat) rock singers :metal

Lonestar: Foreign Language

Alright alright. Enough already! lol

Ironbunny-23  8.3
Odd verses but everything else is so damn smooth and classicly metal.

Bridear-Ignite  8.5
Amazing chorus and solo. Wow!

Aldious-Dilemma 8.5
Pretty straightforward but classic elements abound.

Mardelas-Apocalypse  8.8
Man, just about a perfect metal song!

Fate Gear-Rose Of Destruction  8.5
Really amazed at the Metal sensibilities.

Holy shit! Where do I start? First off, I think you did an amazing job at sending things that appeal to ME. If anyone wants to know what kind of MUSIC I like, they should listen to this EP. The Mardelas is marvelas..lol. What I think is incredible is that these young women in today’s scene have such a great ability to tap into some very classic metal elements, and are able to modernize them. It might be a little between verse noodle or a well timed rest note, or a harmonized outro, but it’s all just so classic, and it’s amazing that somehow female Japanese artists have taken the torch for this style of hard rock and metal.

Lot of hits, lot of misses for both of us in each other’s roulettes, but that’s what makes it fun having someone like you playing.

Exam Grade…8.52

Final Grade...78.25

Glasser: Theology

This EP hits the spot.

Evergrey-Nosferatu  8.3
I don’t love Tom’s voice, but he hides it well here. This song rocks!

Darkology-Beyond The Grave  8.5
This song kicks ass.

Zierler-Darkest Delight  8.5
There’s a lot packed into this. Great tune!

Division By Zero-Your Salvation  8.5
I was having my doubts until that ridiculous instrumental break.

I felt like this EP was really consistently strong. The Evergrey song rocks, and I can’t stand Tom Englund, but it’s so strong I forget about him. The Beyond The Grave tune is cool as shit and the zierler is as well. Love the drumming in the Zierler tune too. I am all over the Division By Zero album after the roulette. I’ve already dropped the needle on it and it sounds great. Has kind of a cool Gothy influence, but it’s both heavy and progressive. The harsh vocals are kind of cringey but other than that, it’s fantastic.

Tom, thank you so much for being one of the TAC Roulette noobs. I was hoping you’d play in it, and you sent some great stuff, but I think you save the best for last.

Exam Grade…8.45

Final Grade...80.5

Nick: Geography

This is a steady eddie EP. Maybe too steady eddie.

Amorphis- The Way  7.8
Pretty mundane track, but the solo spot was gorgeous.

Insomnium-One With The Dark  8.0
Cool atmosphere.

Darkest Era-A Path Made Of Roots  8.3
I really like this and am interested in more.

Lacuna Coil-When A Dead Man Walks  8.0
This is nice enough but this EP needed a killer in this spot.

Anathema-Destiny  7.5
This feels a bit anticlimactic.

Hmm..I have to say that since you were within striking distance of a win, I expected a stronger EP. This has a playing not to lose feel to it. Maybe you were thinking the Anathema would be a surprise find, but it just didn’t move me. The Darkest Era was the clear high point, especially following two pretty standard trecks, and the Lacuna Coil was kind of a let down after the Drakest era. I thought something that would build upon the Darkest Era was needed here.

Nick, that you so much for playing. I was really anticipating you joining, and while you did pretty good, I have much higher expectations of you next time.

Exam Grade…7.92

Final Grade...84.5

Ariich: Foreign Language

There’s some great melodic lead playing on this.

Haive-Iaton  8.2
Opening interlude..but amazing! Think Dave Murray’s intro to Still Life.

Haive-Lapin Kouta 8.6
Vocals are pretty rough, but musically, this is amazing.

Gyze-The White Territories  7.8
This song was awful noisy.

Haive-Salojen Saari 8.3
The harsh vocals to music ratio is a bit high on this one.

Gyze-Dragon Calling  8.2
Much better than the first song.

The opening track Iaton is beautiful. Like I said, it reminded me so much of Still Life. I felt like it was developed enough to qualify for a its own score. Lapin Kouta also has an Iron Maiden feel to it a bit with that melodic line. The vocals for Haive are pretty rough, kind of like what you said when I sent you Hwaino. Haive..Hwaino..wtf lol.. Um anyway, the other Haive track starts out with an amazingly, but then it just gets overtaken by the vocals, though for some reason, they’re not as bad as the first song. As far as the Gyze goes, liked both songs..kinda. The White Territories was a bit messy though I think there’s a decent song in there somewhere. Dragon Calling is much more like it.

Rich, as aways, a pleasure to trade music with you. You quietly kept rising here where you had a legit chance to win. I feel like if you picked 4 good Haive songs, you might’ve taken it.

Exam Grade…8.22

Final Grade...87

Jingle.Boy: Geography

Pretty easy on the ears. Solid.

Primal Fear-One Night In December  8.1
A little long, but solid as hell with a great instrumental section.

Mercenary-Where Darkened Souls Belong 8.3
Easy on the ears for sure. Nice tune. At least it’s shorter than the Primal Fear.

Knight Area-I Believe  8.5
This hits the spot for sure. Love the whole feel of this.

Knight Area-For Those Who Fell   Not Rated
Closing interlude.

I think you knew you were taking a chance with the Primal Fear. I’ve been pretty clear that I am not a Ralf Sheepers fan. Well, that hasn’t changed. The thing about Angra resonating now is that I’ve never said I didn’t like them, but they just have never stuck. Still PF’s music is strong enough to at least push it up to acceptable and then some. The Mercenary definitely hits the spot. The Knight Area (cheesy name lol) was a surprise. It sits right in the pocket that really appeals to me. Reminded me of Hammerfall a bit, and I love me some Hammerfall.

I’m really glad you decided to participate. I think you can fall out of bed and find me music that I like. A lot of what you send, though, is quite safe. Not that that’s a bad thing. You and Wolfking have both won in previous roulettes playing it safe.

Exam Grade…8.3

Final Grade...87

Lithojazzosphere: Geography

I think you could’ve trimmed a little fat here.

Sister Sin-MMXII  Not Rated
Opening Interlude.

Sister Sin-End Of The Line  8.0
Pretty straightforward and easy one the ears.

Morgana Lefay-Salute The Sage  8.2
Old school vibes are strong on this one.

Divinefire-King Of Kings  8.4
Big fan of Christian Liljegren.

Mokoma-Hiljaisuuden Julistaja  7.6
This was a big time miss.

Anibus Gate-Waking Hour  8.0
I like the song, but this band has to have had better material.

Collibus-End Of The Line 8.5
Really excellent song. You saved the best for last.

So believe it or not, this EP grew quite a bit on me over the listening period.  The Sister Sin rocks big time. I love my music just like this. Her voice is ok, not sure of I love it. The line “I put the fuel to the fire tonight”..the tonight strikes a weird thing for me. The song is cool as shit though. I’ve never heard any Morgana Lefay, but this is great. Sounds like Metal Church big time. Divinefire is really good, but the Mokoma, I wish you’d left off. The vocals are awful, though underneath it does crank. TheAnibus Gate is pretty standard, but the Collibus has me completely interested.

You did quite well zeroing in on my base heavy metal core. Wolfking does the same and you can see how well it serves him. The fact that you made this so tight for the entire roulette, you should be happy with. I know I’m impressed. You have a very perceptive and almost an almost savant like insight. It’s really great having you in my roulettes now, and look forward to more.

Exam Grade…8.12

Final Grade...87.5

Wolfking: Current Events

Pretty solid blackish metal. Can I live with these vocals?

Sworn- A Godless Domain 8.0
Maybe a bit long, but the outro grooves.

Sworn- Grand Eclipse  8.4
This really develops into something special.

Sworn- Visions Of Fire  8.5
This is a great tune.

I think the toughest song to get through was A Godless Domain. It’s a bit long and the vocals throughout the three songs are not great, but I can live with them. Both The Grand Eclipse and Visions Of Fire are spectacular.

Well, you threw all your eggs in one basket and…it proves to be strong enough for the win. This could’ve gone south fast if this turned out to be another Mgla situation. All you had to do was break even with Litho, Ariich, and Nick to win, but you end up beating them in this round straight up.

Exam Grade…8.3

Well shit....seems I finally found the sweet spot on that one. :metal :metal

I had a sneaky feeling that collection of bands would do it, oddly enough that's the majority of what the J-metal genre has to offer, they're very power heavy. Seems you should do a deep dive sometime and see what else appeals to ya.

Always a pleasure man, see you next roulette, and congrats Wolfie!!

You hit the nail on the head here...if you follow a lot of these musicians like I do, you'll notice they all have the same classic metal influences...Deep Purple, Metallica, X-Japan, Megadeth and the likes...heck Saki was gushing just this morning about how amazed she was at the Motley Crue show she went to and how impressed she was with the guitar work. Combine that with mandatory music education every year in school, and when the cream rises to the top, this is what you get.

Nick: Geography

This is a steady eddie EP. Maybe too steady eddie.

Amorphis- The Way  7.8
Pretty mundane track, but the solo spot was gorgeous.

Insomnium-One With The Dark  8.0
Cool atmosphere.

Darkest Era-A Path Made Of Roots  8.3
I really like this and am interested in more.

Lacuna Coil-When A Dead Man Walks  8.0
This is nice enough but this EP needed a killer in this spot.

Anathema-Destiny  7.5
This feels a bit anticlimactic.

Well, first off, congrats Ar...er, Kade  Your acceleration somewhere mid-roulette gave you a lead that, in the end, turned out to be too much even for Ariich  :) (or Litho, for that matter)

As for me - thank you Tim, this has been a ton of fun. I was, too, looking forward to participate. I gotta say, I don't think I did too bad as a noob, finishing top 5  ;) I am actually quite happy as I got to send you many of my favorites (keeping an eye on what I though you'd enjoy too, of course). Paradise Lost, Sentenced, Saviour Machine...so glad these worked, as I'm super-fond of these bands. Other things, well, they didn't land so well, but that's part of the fun.

The EP - I didn't really think of playing it safe...again, some songs are pretty big favorites of mine. I wanted to do melancholy, because that's something I end up looking for in music. I also wanted to capture in a way that wasn't overly depressive or "slow". Amorphis' The Way clearly didn't connect, but that's a song I was always going to send. I always loved it. The Lacuna Coil tune...yes, it's probably not a hard-hitter that elevates the whole thing. I think it's a great song, but I see what you mean. And, as for Anathema, that was a strategic mistake  As I explained earlier, I was thinking of flow, and in a way it was designed to be anticlimatic, but it didn't work. Funnily enough, it was very much a last-minute addition...lesson learned!

Anyway, always a pleasure to chat music with you, and this roulette was no exception. And a great group of participants for the fun stuff!

What's a grade point average?

I'm glad to see I came 6th overall in the EP ranking.

GPA is the average of the numeric equivalents of your letter grades (sometimes weighted based on the number of credits a certain class counts for).

For example, an A corresponds to a 4, a B to a 3 etc. (then there's A-, B+ and so on)...the GPA averages those.

Even after the roulette ends, the education keeps on coming.

Thanks as always Tim. Your roulettes have reached a level of notoriety that I can only hope to one day achieve. Its been a pleasure, even if I didn't do as well as I'd hoped. It's tough with so many roulette pros though.

I do consistently well in TAC's roulettes. Consistently in the bottom  ;D

I'm glad I decided to play as well.  Happy to tie for 3rd with the mighty Brit... and almost over-took Litho.  I'm also kinda proud shocked I had two perfect marks during the main assignments.

Congrats to my brother-from-down-under.   :metal

Like nick said, I wouldn't consider my submissions as playing it safe - most of what I sent is just the biggest intersection of the Venn Diagram of our musical tastes. Any time I tried to stray into different territory to mix it up a little (Presto Ballet, Affector, Sleep Token) - it was a big whiff.  So, if sending music that met-in-the-middle is playing it safe, then indeed I was safe-as-shit for the most part.

I expect you to return the favour in a few weeks.  ;)

Thanks Tim and thanks fellow classmates.  Sworn was definitely a risk but knew it would be somewhat up your alley.  I get what you mean about the first song but every other song is more like the other two and around 6-7 minutes long.  Do check the full album.  Probably should have sent  the song Monumental instead but the album for me is the best of 2023.  It's all a win.

Loved this roulette and happy to chalk up another win in your classroom.

I actually listened to the album this morning at work. Yes, Monumental is really good. I'm just glad you didn't send the last song.

I enjoy this style of music but it's not across the board. The Sworn just felt more musical, than say Uada or Mgla.

I almost sent the last song in place of Grand Eclipse to kind of bookend it with the intro and make it like a little story EP.  For the first few listens, the last song was easily my least favourite but now, it's actually probably top 3 with Visions and Eclipse.  A real grower.  I learned from the Mgla submission though and knew it would have been a silly choice.  My early fav on the first couple of listens was Eclipse so made sense to go with that.

You mentioned above about Chad and I winning from playing safe.  I'm really quite happy I took some risks in this one.  Could have gone south as you say but did enough.

And yes, the Mgla album I love but Sworn has more melodies, colour and musicianship.

Currently Cattle Decapitation, but there are honestly lots of contenders. The new Stortregn is also climbing.

Just finished listening to the new album from Xoth (I wasn't too familiar with them, this is their third album)...it was quite the entertaining ride!

Looking at the 'similar artists' on Spotify and this should be right up my street. Slugdge, Stortregn, Paranorm and Ulthar! Sign me up.
