Curious - how to you decide what songs are sister songs?

So I started this in my last roulette. What I found during the rounds was that I would get songs that were similar in style.

I just try and pair them up if it makes sense. I could've paired Vanden Plas with Exlibris as well, but decided to make Litho sweat it out instead.

Nick: Klimt 1918-Snow Of ‘85

I thought this was a bit iffy, but even on this first listen, it continued to build.

It’s spot in the rankings doesn’t really reflect how much I really enjoyed this song. I have a soft spot for music like this. Almost Gothy/80’s College Alternative. It’s a style that I turned my nose at when I was younger, but the older I get, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, it remained an underdog throughout the round, never really elevating like I thought or hoped it would.

This was not completely unexpected  I figured there would be things in the song you'd like, and others where it would just kinda be "there" for you. I LOVED this song when it came out in 2005...a few years later I think there is a certain, um, naivete in the approach, especially with the vocals, I don't think I connect quite as much these days,  but when I did a re-listen for the roulette I found I still very much like it. As I mentioned to you, I love the guitars, and how the song keeps moving through various moods.

Speaking of the style - the band actually went on into an even more "alternative/shoegaze" kind of direction in subsequent albums, and basically lost most of the "gothy" side of their music. I still enjoy what they are doing, but I suspect you wouldn't  Down the road, though, I'd recommend you check out the rest of this album - it's really quite good.

Nick, I am definitely planning on checking this out. The score notwithstanding, I actually really liked it.

James - don't worry about the low score for Katatonia; with rule 7, it simply mean that you can send them again later in the roulette.

Not bad! Tim, if you enjoyed this one, you should definitely give the whole Never, Neverland album a listen. It's fantastic. There's a couple of fillers on "side B" but, man, the guitar playing on it is some of the best in thrash.

Speaking of Vanden Plas...I am a big fan of their first few albums (Colour Temple remains my favorite because of the way it mixed prog metal with more ear-wormy 80s hard rock/metal), and kinda lost track after Christ0. I mean, every time I happened to listen to some new song it sounded good (they are super-consistent!), but it wouldn't tickle me enough to re-ignite the flame 

I have to say, though, that I just put on Three Ghosts and it's REALLY good. I guess I should check out the Ghost Xperiment...

They're both great albums.  Three Ghosts is from the first of the two and it's just a really strong album.  And the second one is maybe just a tiny bit different-ish, but still very much Vanden Plas.

I think it's easy to kind of fall off with them but really everything they do is great.  Colour Temple is actually my least favorite.  I guess Beyond Daylight is my favorite but you can't go wrong with any of it.
