The Official Spiritbox Thread V. The Fear of Fear
« on: August 25, 2023, 09:50:49 AM »
I think it's finally time they get their own thread, I know they already have a few big fans here.  Another new single just came out, and it's fairly straightforward, but still pretty great.

For those that have never heard them, they are essentially an alt metal/progressive metalcore/djent band.  Their first EP is probably of the most interest to prog fans, particularly with the 3-part suite they did, "The Mara Effect".  Here is part 1 for a sample.

Their album Eternal Blue two years blew me away, was my album of the year, and has definitely altered and expanded my taste in noticeable ways since then.  It's in contention for the most important album to me in the past few years, and will be in my all-time top 50 when I do that in the near future.  I've discovered many other vaguely similar bands since then, but no one else excels quite as well with the contrast of harsh and beautiful clean vocals, massive guitar tone, ethereal clean tones, industrial-ish electronic elements and such.  Here is a sample of one of their relatively mellower songs from it (though much heavier topically).

The new single is solid, but yeah, a bit more straightforward. That's OK, I like it

Seen them twice in the last two years, incredible concerts.

Their No Doubt cover they were doing last US tour was incredible, here's my video of it (including Rotoscope)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdrhzjy-2S4 the ass shaking part of the show!  :metal

I liked the new single as well.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Yeah, that's a good package, since "Rotoscope" was essentially "what if Garbage was super-heavy?"  No Doubt and Garbage are two of my favorite 90s bands, so it gets across their update of that flavor.

I dont think I ever noticed a similarity between Rotoscope and Garbage but I think I can see it with that chorus. I'm not too into Garbage though so it never crossed my mind (I do enjoy them, seen them twice).

Fucking amazing band, seen them twice as well, once on their recent headline tour, and the other in front of thousands at Aftershock where they fucking slayed. Their headline show was insane though, never thought I'd see the whole floor of a venue turn into a pit, but yeah, that happened during Holy Roller. The band is solid, and Courtney is one of my favorite new vocalists.

Still haven't sampled the new single, I'm in the middle of my roulette listening, I'll probably get to it tomorrow night.

Music video for the new single.  Super dark, heavy, and ethereal.

Half of the upcoming EP is already out now, and all are great tracks so far, it's certainly going to be in contention for EP of the year.

New EP The Fear of Fear is out.

Music video for "Ultraviolet" was just released.

Music video for "Angel Eyes" premieres in a few hours.

At 25 minutes the EP is almost as long as some albums this year (maybe longer than a few), definitely a high contender for my year-end lists either way.

Absolutely, gave it two solid spins this morning. It's absolutely outstanding.
