But using the lovely Mrs. TAC (please tell her I said hello, Tim. Been a few years)

I will!  :)

The fuck are we talking about?

The other day, I said the lay person only knows Extreme as the More than Words band. Later that day I said in a different post that the lay person wouldn't even know who Extreme is. Brian asked me "Well, which is it", so I amended my thought to say that the average lay person would indeed know More Than Words, but not know Extreme.

I used my wife as an example to prove my point which she did.

Extreme is more of a band that those who like rock music, particularly 80s and 90s hard rock, know immediately. But ask a random person on the street, they wouldn't know.

At the end of the day, that was my point, really.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I like that we're having this discussion in a thread titled "Extreme (the band)," because apparently Extreme is so well known that they need a parenthetical to distinguish them from some other thing called Extreme that might be discussed in the General Music Discussion on the DT forum.  :lol

Well, that was an interesting discussion  :lol

The Extreme/LC leg 2 of the US starts in NJ tomorrow.  I plan on attending (not 100%, but I'm fairly certain I'll be attending).

I do think the two bands are actually fairly comparable.  Without being too similar, they still have a lot of similarities.  The timing of both bands, fantastic lead guitar, eccentric front man. I think it's a good pairing.

Seen LC twice now and Extreme just once.

That Extreme show was at Fenway opening for Aerosmith and I didn't come away very impressed, but the sound sucked and I was fairly unfamiliar with them besides a song or two.  I've been listening to them a bit more to be more familiar for tomorrow night and I definitely enjoy a lot of the Extreme songs that they are playing, including the new stuff. Can't say I care for their ballads or softer stuff though, that's not clicking for me, but they have some good rockers.

Both LC shows were a bit odd.  It seemed both times the band was arguing before hitting the stage.  Both times they kind of sounded poor too. I saw on setlist.fm that they were soundchecking songs in front of the crowd?  Makes me wonder if this band has a serious issue with being on time. I do enjoy them though, maybe on a similar level to my enjoyment of Extreme.

Looking forward to it. I see them next month. Hoping both bands tweak the sets a bit on this leg.

I mean, you still might not love them, but certainly do not judge Extreme from that show.  They didn't suck, that's not it, but they're a more intimate band than you can get from a stadium show, especially that one.  I saw them on the Pornograffiti25 tour headlining the Mohegan Sun arena; it was the big arena, but in their 'half capacity' mode, and it was a WAY better representation.  The third time I saw them - in a theater back on the III tour - was even better.

Yeah I understand that.  Not ever show is the same.  The show tomorrow is a small theater.  About 1400 seats accoridng to google, the layout looks exactly like the Count basie Theater in Red Bank that I go to often for shows. Definitely more intimate.  BUt also, like I said, I think getting to know the music a bit more since that last show will be a big reason to enjoy it more.  I actually went back and even watched my clips from that Fenway show last night and was able to recognize the songs that I didn't know before.

That's the kind of venue they can completely own.  I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts after the show.

They were my favorite concert of '23, and certainly started out my '24 concert season in a BIG way :metal They added "Thicker Than Blood" which was AWESOME! I REALLY wish they would have done "Hurricane" before "MTW" as I'd love to hear that live! Also, Living Colour REALLY IS THE PERFECT opening band for EXTREME. Had the crowd up on their feet (not me, i had the perfect old man seat-1st row center lower mezz LOL) for their entire 45 mins and Vernon is a monster guitarist.

I've never seen Living Colour, so I can't really comment on their show.  But when I saw Extreme on the Saudades tour, and King's X opened, I felt like they were the "perfect" opening band for Extreme.  Both bands released DVDs from that tour, so playing them back to back is a nice way to relive that tour.

I would actually say Living Colour were the better band last night.  They crowd did seem really into them.  But honestly, that bass tone from Doug Wimbish was incredible.  I've seen them two previous times and they did not sound nearly as good as they did last night.  The sound for them was just incredible for a live show.  Crystal clear.  The vocals were really good.  Vernon's style of playing is unique and cool.  They did a nice tribute to Sugarhill records locally, which was cool because in the lobby they had a little display set up of memorabilia from Sugarhill (I know nothing of this though, but still, thought it was cool).  I even heard people outside between sets saying "I don't know how Extreme can top that!" and I felt the same way, and in the end think they did not top it, but that's no knock on Extreme.

Extreme were certainly very good.  Nuno is incredible. They also sounded really good overall. Is it normal for Nuno to do all the talking between songs and not Gary though?  As someone as eccentric as Gary is on stage, I'm surprised he didn't really talk at all.  Nuno's banter was really hit or miss for me.  Telling the crowd to start a band for him to manage and make all the money??? dud.  Him calling out people in the crowd for not being there since the start??? dud. I almost felt like he shouldn't be talking too much, but he admitted they had some issues at time for the first show leading to some pauses between songs and that may be why he talked so much.  The standing drum set was pretty cool for a few songs.

The show was a full 2 hours long (from 9:15 to 11:15).  Completely live.  Really great performances. Crowd seemed into it as everyone stood on the floor, but hard to tell how into it they were from my seat in the back.  Place wasn't sold out, but was mostly full.  Paid $48 at the door to get in.  Thought it was wierd the venue had no security check what so ever and also would let you leave and come back in, unchecked.  The setlist had some minor changes from the first time around, but didn't make much of a difference for me.  At the end of the day, Extreme's songs aren't completely winning me over.  They are good, but not great, but the performance is what is great.

Really good concert and good pairing of bands.

Here's some songs, my full video will be out later tonight:

Cool. I had hoped that "Thicker Than Blood" would be in the set. Excited for that. I wonder why they didn't do "Hurricane?" I know they played it when my fam and I saw them. Nuno wept, so maybe it's just too raw.

Yes, i saw the video on youtube where he wept playing Hurricane. I think he mentioned something about losing a friend or a loved one recently.

I've seen Extreme live going back to '91 and have been a BIG FAN ever since their performance at the Freddie Mercury tribute show in '92. Have seen them many times over the years, and I would say that while Gary IS a madman on stage, Nuno has always been the "alpha dog" of the band :hat. Gary HAS talked "some" in the past, but the crowd interaction has always been Nuno's thing. I will say though, that while Nuno is always featured on stage (AS HE DAMN WELL SHOULD BE :hefdaddy), it does seem to me that THIS "SIX" tour has REALLY spotlighted him, which to me is a GREAT thing! I think it stems from the great reaction to the "Rise" video and people FINALLY  giving Nuno his just due as a PREMIER rock guitarist! :hefdaddy

I have no issue with them centering so much of the show around him, but maybe cut back a tad bit on his talking time  :lol I just didn't really recall him talking at the Fenway show, but different situation than your own headline show obviously.  Guys legit for sure though.  His backing and occasional lead vocals were solid too. Actually loved the backing vocals in general for Extreme.

Yeah, they're a tight live band. I probably come off as a dick sometimes...I know I do, but I'm actually happy that they're having a great tour and seem to be riding a fresh wave.  They're lifers, so you gotta respect that. I always thought that timing was their issue. If they had their first album come out even a year and a half earlier, i think they'd have been more popular. I root for them. They're a hometown team. I do wish I liked their music more because...I just don't.

At the Pornograffiti25 show, Nuno did almost all of the talking (and interestingly, he made an excuse about issues and time there as well, since they took the stage kind of late).

I appreciate your  :tup  :metal

The bold is kind of how I feel ultimately.  They sound a lot like bands that I really like, Van Halen and Aerosmith.  They are great performers.  The songs are good, but I haven't heard a great song by them. They just don't top any of the bands that they are similar to, to me.  I'm not trying to be negative on the band, I truly did enjoy that show.  It's that I just feel this band won't get to another level of my love because the songs just aren't great to me.

Also, I don't see it mentioned on setlist.fm, but I assume this is normal, does Nuno normally do the intro to VH's Women in Love?  He did it right before the encore songs started (and I dont see it mentioned on the setlist the same way the Fat Bottomed Girls intro is listed).  I thought it was awesome.  I know he did a small part of Eruption earlier as well.

Anyway, my full video went up last night:

It wouldn't surprise me if he did.  He and Eddie had gotten pretty close, and I know he took Eddie's passing especially hard.  There's a great video out there, although I can't remember who he was talking with (may have been the Sammy Hagar one on the rooftop terrace at Nuno's house), and he was talking about how he had played some of Eddie's stuff for years, but of course couldn't manage to exactly channel Eddie's sound to his own satisfaction, and he fantasized about playing on Eddie's exact rig.  And then one day he got to hang out in Eddie's studio, and Eddie invited him to play on his stuff...and Nuno was stunned and disappointed to find that no matter how hard he tried to sound like Eddie on Eddie's own gear with Eddie's own setup, he still sounded like Nuno.  :lol  He said it was at that moment that he realized the importance of having your own style, and how having a signature sound comes down to the musician's own hands and mindset more than the gear they are playing.

I obviously am not familiar with the band to know history, but it seemed fairly obvious to me that he was inspired at least somewhat by Eddie, jsut from watching him and obviously from doing a few bits of his music.  At 49:35 in my video, you can see the intro to Women in Love.

EVH was a gigantic influence on Nuno.

Extreme as a band was very influenced by Van Halen, Aerosmith, and Queen.

I can tell that from the songs, but the performance obviously showed both VH and Queen (the Fat Bottomed Girls intro for Banshee).  I don't recall anything specific in the show that referenced Aerosmith although it's possible I missed it. I thought the little tributes were cool though.

It's actually a Massachusetts law that if you are a band from Boston you have to be influenced by Aerosmith (or Boston).

Just bumped to say that after being very fickle on the idea for a few weeks, I did a search today and found a single seat in row 5, four seats in from center at the Las Vegas show a week from tomorrow.

I’m flying in next Sunday for a week-long building code education seminar for work.  So I figured since I don’t gamble, I should have some fun in my off time.

The rows are behind a small GA section in the orchestra pit, but it should still be a great seat.

In this instance, I have a hotel room 10 minutes from the venue, and nowhere to go in the morning but downstairs to the conference room. It cannot be understated how much of a difference that makes.

AMEN, JD. Enjoy the show. The fam and I are going later this week. This will be the third time on this tour for my wife and I (second for the kid). Just a great pairing.

Saw the show this weekend. It was the third show in three nights for the band, end of the run, and of course, everything was blooming like crazy here. Gary had an off night, clearly having some issues, but unlike other bands, they didn't shorten the set or cancel.

Solid two hours. I really love the updated production. Last summer, when we saw them twice, it was just Extreme playing the songs. This time, they had a huge video screen, new artwork and animation for each album being represented (some of which was striking - I'd love to know who did it). It was really cool. One of the cooler ones was for their single off the new record, "Thicker Than Blood." I took a video. Check it out here and pay attention to the animation:

https://youtu.be/fvumIM5rMos?si=DBJDvVso-s_pOEz8

Love that tune, and the animation was killer.

Overall, had a blast. I felt bad for Gary. My family are all singers. We've all been there. It sucks when you have a bit of hay fever and catch something. He couldn't get to the high stuff consistently. He did in August, so this was just bad timing. The band all sounded phenomenal. They always do.

If I had one complaint, and this is REALLY nitpicky, being as how III Sides is my favorite record, I would have liked to have seen them drop "Rest in Peace" and "Cupid's Dead" from the show, and replace them with "Warheads" and "Stop the World." Or hell, "Color Me Blind." I'd like a little more variety on the tracks they play from III Sides. It's such a killer album, and it gets overshadowed by Pornograffiti. They cut "Tragic Comic" from III Sides to add in "Thicker Than Blood," which was fine. But I wish they'd vary up the III Sides stuff more.

And this is REALLY selfish, but I'm dying to hear "X-Out." That is my favorite track from Six. I've noticed the more industrial vibe cuts (X-Out and Thicker Than Blood) have become my favorites. I feel its a direction that suits them to a degree. I was a big fan of Gary's Tribe of Judah album, and I'm pretty happy that a couple of songs that would be at home on that album are on Six.
