^Willing to bet that's Erotomania.

Erotomania, Voices, and The Silent Man are three parts to a whole. It's one song call A Mind Beside Itself.

I found this old thread for "The Silent Man" in the song index thread.  Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows whatever happened to the mirror from the music video for "The Silent Man."  If you recall, the video for features a mirror designed exactly like the mirror on the cover artwork for Awake.  Surely, this mirror must still exist somewhere.  It would be a super cool collectible.  Just wondering if its whereabouts have ever been mentioned over the years.  Maybe it's hanging in one of the DT guy's houses.

As someone who has a tiny collection of artwork/props from movies, I would kill to have some DT memorabilia too. Would love to know if anyone knows anything, but I bet MP has lots of old DT stuff that people would want.

I feel like there was some DVD commentary where MP talked about this mirror.

I don't know the answer, but I'm curious why you think it "must still exist somewhere" - especially since it's shown being smashed:  https://youtu.be/M1gFXVANCt8?si=WBXgHKEcSergVRW2&t=170

Regardless, MP directed the video, so you could try reaching out to him on social media and asking.  He responds to stuff like this not infrequently.
Feelin' kinda spooky.

I wonder if shirtless hairy chest man still exists somewhere too.

This is actually a really interesting question to me, gonna start another thread for some more visibility

I forgot JM plays guitar in the music video. And it's very cool in a weird, historic/time capsule way to see the band minus KevMo walking across in the video.

I don't believe MP directed the video.  My recollection was that he planned to do so, but was sick so someone else directed it.

Here's MP's diary entry for the day:
QuoteDate: Sunday – Feb. 5th, 1995
City: Munich, Germany
Video shoot for 'The Silent Man.' 7:30 AM lobby call at the hotel for the tour bus to pick us up. The driver oversleeps & we wait an hour and a half only to find out that he's parked next door to the hotel! Drive out to the video shoot location. I'm sick as a dog with a stomach virus, so I spend most of the day in my bunk. (So much for my co-directing credit on the video!) Run through a few takes behind stained glass, playing in a barnyard full of hay & walking through a muddy field in the freezing cold. Fun, fun, fun! I only puked once on location, too! We wrap around 7 & head back to the hotel & then on to Ludwigsburg.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Max Kuehnau

yeah that's what I remember reading as part of their biography (not the diary entry though)
All my natural instincts are begging me to stop
But somehow I carry on, heading for the top
A physical absurdity, a tremendous mental game
Helping me understand exactly who I am

This is bottom 5 DT song for me, if not the worst. It's so gutless.

FII has my fave (ToT) and least fave; a great album.

Is it 'gutless' because it's a ballad?

Well, the worst would probably be one of those noise tracks from TA...

I like some of the ballads-'Out of Reach' is a good example. James can really sing, with a bit of tenderness.

But the lyrics, the backing vocals, and even the guitar stuff in TSM rub me up the wrong way.
I find stretches of Awake to be hard going, and this is the nadir.

Only my opinion.

Carry on.

Thank you for sharing...and I should've clarified (I'm not one for jabs, as anyone here can attest), I was just sincerely curious about the term 'gutless.'

To me, gutless = insincere, and I feel like "The Silent Man" (along with most of Awake) is the band operating at their sincerest. And as far as JP goes, I think his lyrics were next level during that period.

That said, we like what we like, so absolutely no worries from me (and thanks for clarifying).

TheOutlawXanadu

The Silent Man is a beautiful song. Very different from what the band normally do. I really appreciate the minimalist approach.

HOF

Have always enjoyed The Silent Man, though the lyrics are a bit hard to follow.

Xaves

The Silent Man is one of my favorite ballads of theirs. The background vocals at the chorus are great.

Thoughtspart3

I love this song too. Voices, Erotomania, followed by Silent Man is a great trilogy.

PetFish

I've been re-watching the old DT videos with commentary and re-discovering a lot of cool stuff that I'd forgotten.

One of the coolest things is the LSFNY version of Silent Man.  The overall rockin' vibe is great but the real star is James.  When he goes up at the end it's just beautiful and fits perfectly with the arrangement.
