lonestar's Roulette--- And the winner is....
« on: July 03, 2023, 08:07:52 AM »
Heyyyyyyyy all, welcome to my first roulette in fucking ages. My taste has gone through some insane changes since my last one, not even sure I liked growl vocals back then lol, and Japan was still just a cuisine to me. But that’s the beauty of music, it changes as I change, as long as I’m willing to just hit play. I can’t even begin to count the amount of amazing discoveries I’ve had by just taking a chance on a link some rando on the internet posted or some dude in a concert line mentioned. The beauty of a roulette though, is you chumps get to do all the work for me. So I’m gonna be doing some weird things on this one...

Format- We'll go with 12 entrants, unlike Rich, I don’t have a job where I can spin music, most of my listening is done during commutes and workouts, so I want a playlist that will fit that time span, around an hour or so. There will be themes, but they’ll be rather broad. We’ll go with 8 rounds, and I’d like to keep songs under 8 minutes unless specified please (I won’t be a dick about it if you all don’t push it). And please keep all submissions to Spotify, as I said listening will be done during commutes and workouts so it’ll be tricky to switch outlets.

Scoring- This will be the fun part, for me at least lol...I want to do ranked scoring. 12 points for the best song to 1 point for the worst each round. I think this will provide a way for anyone to work their way back into the top (unless their songs just consistently suck balls of course), and will provide endless entertainment for me watching your angst and anxiety as the scores come out and you realize you went from second place to ninth...

Tastes- Yeah, this is where things get interesting…I’m all over the board…anything from brutal metal to smooth jazz. If I hit play and like it, I’ll dig further. I was initally raised on a steady diet of 70s prog and the classic rock radio staples. As I grew I added the neo-prog giants to the list. Found DT in ‘92 and until I found you losers that was how it remained. Once I found DTF, and all the bands that came with the deal, especially through my work with Lady Obscure, my tastes and library exploded. Now pretty much all metal has some appeal one way or another. Love the heavy stuff, dig djent, appreciate the cores, sludge, stoner, all has appeal, even bits and pieces of power. Still dig some good prog, but it’s hit or miss these days. Vocals can make or break a song, and it’s pretty obvious I have zero issues with female leads and am totally good with growls. I definitely dig me some instrumentals, and that format can be very, very applicable to the round themes as well. Starting to appreciate other genres too, love the limited jazz I’ve come across, tons of indigenous stuff appeals, even have enjoyed a good deal of the jpop and kpop that has come across my path, so I’m very curious to see what else is out there. I’m all about how music makes me feel, where it takes me. I’ve taken a page out of Crow’s playbook and put together a playlist of stuff I’ve been diggin on lately...

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2wq0WPVDlXuecmSL9IS5aw?si=9cdf5487d0a74e52

Mostly, I want you all to challenge yourselves, take chances, step outside your usual stuff. 8 rounds of all power/prog metal will make for a very boring roulette.

--- Send me...

Rd 1- A quick introduction (5 minutes or less, get me exited that you’re in my roulette)

Rd 2- A Song Outside of Your Comfort Zone (be honest please, send me your guilty pleasures)

Rd 3- An Angry Song

Rd 4- A Jazzy Song

Rd 5- A Poppy Song

Rd 6- A Song of Hope

Rd 7- Open Round...Make it Count (10 minutes here folks)

Rd 8- Two sequential songs, that is two songs that are next to each other on an album (20 minutes)

We'll let this all marinate with you guys for a week or so, that'll let the players get in, and let the format and themes marinate a bit.

Ok...teh ban list...

Firstly the ban list from my last roulette of course applies, and it's contained in the OP here...

https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=51047

Secondly, pretty much anything from classic rock radio is off limits, I’m not going to list every band here, but 20 straight years of listening to it on the radio has covered most of the bands. You can ask, but don’t be surprised by a no. I will be going by band, not by album...meaning if I've heard enough of a band to know their sound, their banned even if I didn't hear their first album.

Thirdly, there are bands I’ve added to the list, but my addled brain can’t be asked to drag them up. Going by my Spotify top listens, here are the big ones... If you are gonna try and hit my recent J-metal obsession, my favorites are listed, but be advised, and while I’m sure there are a ton more to be found, there are many others that I played once and they fell flat, so take your chances. And I mean tons. (note as well, these are listed in order of most listened to, which should hint more to where my current tastes lie, and while that applies, that also doesn’t include any of the stuff I listen to from my personal library)

Nemophila

Band Maid

Gacharic Spin

Spiritbox

Senri Kawaguchi (and anything in her blast radius)

Allegaeon

Babymetal

Gloryhammer

The Warning

Asterism

Bloodywood

Orphaned Land

Rolling Quartz

Lonesome Blue

Voices from the Fuselage

The HU

Hanabie

Saiseiga

Caligula’s Horse

Periphery

Seven Spires

The Uncrowned

Lovebites

Ov Sulfur

Lisa X Band/Koiai

TRiDENT

Doll$boxx

Bridear

SPiritial

Aldious

Ghost of the Machine

Round 2 is going to be interesting.  I'm not even sure what my comfort zone is and isn't.   :lol   I guess technically speaking it's my favorite niche subgenres in my OP contrasted with round 10 genres in my own roulette, but I'm amped up to spend way too much time pondering it over the next couple weeks.   ;D

In fairness I have exactly the same problem. I don't really have a comfort zone as such, other than stuff at various extremes which I don't know that I'd want to send in a roulette. :lol And I definitely don't have any guilty pleasures - no way I'm feeling guilt over what music I like! :lol

I mean, for clarification, for me Atarrashi GAKKO! would definitely fall under this round's parameters. They're definitely out of my usual wheelhouse, and while I'm too old for the guilt shit, they surely qualify as a guilty pleasure to me.
