This forum will have officially jumped the shark if Lars Ulrich makes the top 25.

I'll be shocked if he doesn't make it.

Agree.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

He wasn't even on my short list.

Your list probably has crazy ass drummers in obscure metal bands with names I can't pronounce.

List sent!

Is yours mostly metal guys like mine?  :D

Oh, are there other genres eligible are there?

The genres eligible are metal, rock, prog, prog rock, prog metal, and one list with a surprising amount of Korean and Japanese metal.

No Korean, and only two Japanese metal drummers.

I think just the opposite.    Lars was never in danger of being top four for me, but he is in the mix.  Kirk never even got a thought.

Really interesting to read the comments about Kirk and Lars and making these lists. This is definitely a case of recency bias. I mean in the 80s Kirk was on the cover of every guitar mag, being hailed as a brilliant innovative guitarist and Lars was all over the drum magazines. Sure Kirk didn't make it in the end on the guitarists list but Lars has a good chance I guess, we are talking favourites here after all.

I think Kirk is a case of getting complacent.  In the 80s he was taking lessons from Joe Satriani and crafted a lot of fairly memorable and classic solos.  By the 90s he became overdependent upon the wah pedal and stock pentatonic licks and became sloppy live.  It happens to successful people sometimes, they lose the motivation to maintain or improve.

Lars, in my opinion, was the catalyst for a lot of things regarding drumming, and then a bunch of other drummers took his blue print and ran with it, and he never really evolved beyond that blue print.  Whether he makes the consensus 25 or not, you can guarantee he influenced a lot of the drummers that probably will make the top 25.

Wow, the deadline is really starting to sneak up on me.  I had a rough draft ready to go pretty soon after the thread started, but I haven't really made any progress at all on sorting the order out any better.  Not sure I'm going to be able to either, I'm pretty happy with who is on it, but I don't like the order at all, yet can't really figure out a better one.  I'll probably just send it tonight to have it done regardless.

I'm not sure whether this is "evolution" or not.  I think to the bands I like and listen to, and the VAST majority are not doing thing today that are radically different than from whatever their heyday.  Paul McCartney is one of the most revolutionary bass players in rock, but is he REALLY furthering the instrument at this point?  He's clearly not playing Jaco lines, but I'm not really ready to call him "complacent".

I have a LOT of criticisms about Kirk; I sometimes wonder what the f--- he's even doing at times.  I've heard it posited that he's given up, he's focused more on horror films and his haunted house stuff, he's focused more on weed... whatever.  But I wonder if he's just found that balance of his "style" and what the band requires at this time.   Not my thing, but that doesn't mean it's bad, only that it's not my thing (honestly, I have a running debate with a guy I work with who reveres Kirk and I have no bones in telling him I'm just not seeing it).

Regarding Lars, he's no way near my favourite drummer these days and he's not been for 20 years but since Maiden and Metallica was my first introduction to metal and also the first two bands I really became a diehard fan of. It would be a disservice to Lars to not mention him since I spent so many hours trying to learn the double pattern in One in my youth. He definitely got me started with alot of things even though I haven't payed attention to his drumming for ages.

However I won't be doing a list even though it would be fun. I just don't have the time to list every drummer I know and then try to rate them, I get exhausted just thinking about it.  :lol

Lars was not physically gifted and not a schooled drummer, but he’s recorded a lot of iconic drum parts.

I had a list of 34 that I put into the ranking engine.  I could probably stretch and come up with 26 other names, but I'd be throwing in joke names (e.g., Ricki Rocket), guys I would have to look up (e.g., the guy from Krokus), or guys who are renowned but I don't listen to (e.g., Buddy Rich).

I gotta ask, and I don't mean any disrespect here, but are you a fan of hundreds of drummers? Because when I hear favorites, I think the ones that really rise above the rest. And if you have 60 favorite drummers, there must be hundreds to choose from. Maybe you do. Maybe there're hundreds of drummers you're a big fan of. I dunno. But I don't think favorites means every drummer who has done stuff you like, and if I came up with a list of 60 drummers, it'd just be drummers in bands I like, or famous drummers that I respect but don't really love/listen to often, not necessarily drummers I love on their own or that I focus on.

I think some people have much flatter listening and favorites hierarchies than others.  I know people who listen to the same particular album every single day for years, and pretty much just listen to the same dozen favorite artists over and over for the bulk of their listening.  I can go months and sometimes years without listening to some of my top favorite artists/albums/guitarists/drummers/vocalists/etc.  They're favorites because I've put in significant listening time at various points, but there's probably more I can get out of further listens to them (especially their deeper discographies) than people who more narrowly focus in, and I don't mind it being this way at all.  So my #1 or even my #10 on a list I might be in absolute terms less of a fan of them than a lot of super-fans of artists.
