Alright, starting writeups now, finally. Last call on the bonus game, I'm probably gonna post results for that right before results unless I get any more interest/intent to submit for it.

Bonus Game Results, Pt. 1

So I got submissions for this from eight people!

Ariich, Buddy, Dacul, Evermind, Litho, Luke, Puppies, and TAC.
We're gonna start at the bottom and work our way up. Reverse scoring based on placements, so lower numbers are better. And there's one tie so ties are broken by whichever one I like more because this is my roulette  :corn

16th Place: Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem
Submitted by faizoff

Ariich: 15th
Buddy: 9th
Dacul: 3rd
Evermind: 11th
Litho: 14th
Luke: 16th
Puppies: 11th
TAC: 16th

Total: 95 points

No further comment beyond "this is probably my favorite song of the entire roulette" and if that doesn't sum up how out of step I am with DTF's tastes nowadays I don't know what else will  :lol

15th: Escaping by Blues Traveler
Submitted by Stadler

Ariich: 16th
Buddy: 16th
Dacul: 14th
Evermind: 9th
Litho: 11th
Luke: 5th
Puppies: 12th
TAC: 9th

Total: 92 points

Not too surprised by this one, it was some effort to even get people to listen to it and even then, I like this one but it's not especially a standout either :lol Maybe I should've gone with the Alice Cooper track, idk.

14th: Untie by KANGA
Submitted by Litho

Ariich: 14th
Buddy: 8th
Dacul: 7th
Evermind: 10th
Litho: 1st
Luke: 12th
Puppies: 13th
TAC: 15th

Total: 80 points

Proving that actually submitting for the bonus game only goes so far, but I kinda get it, this one's a grower on top of being electronic/pop stuff that DTF was never gonna love :lol Really excited to check out this album though.

13th: Empty Nest by Silversun Pickups
Submitted by Vmadera

Ariich: 5th
Buddy: 4th
Dacul: 11th
Evermind: 15th
Litho: 4th
Luke: 15th
Puppies: 14th
TAC: 11th

Total: 79 points

Another submitted I had a hard time picking for, in hindsight I probably should've picked your round 8 submission 'cause it would've played a little better to this crowd. Whether or not I liked it more or less. Which remains to be seen! This is a nice song though :)

12th: Will to Believe by Clarence Clarity
Submitted by Ariich

Ariich: 3rd
Buddy: 3rd
Dacul: 4th
Evermind: 16th
Litho: 16th
Luke: 13th
Puppies: 10th
TAC: 14th

Total: 79

Yeah, I'm not surprised by this one :lol This was probably my favorite discovery of the entire roulette (and the first album I checked out too 'cause I just. Could Not Wait) but to the rock/metal/prog etc. crowd this one's friggin' indecipherable :lol Fjokra would've done better but that's less fun y'know?

11th: Strangers by Fractures
Submitted by Reaper

Ariich: 11th
Buddy: 12th
Dacul: 6th
Evermind: 8th
Litho: 3rd
Luke: 10th
Puppies: 15th
TAC: 13th

Total: 78

Yeah, this is the pop/electronic tune that'd do best here, fair  :lol I don't really have much else to say about this one, it's just a fun tune.

10th: Famous Blue Raincoat by Leonard Cohen
Submitted by Seneca

Ariich: 13th
Buddy: 5th
Dacul: 9th
Evermind: 2nd
Litho: 8th
Luke: 14th
Puppies: 16th
TAC: 10th

Total: 77

Honestly did better than I expected, given how simple, stripped-back, and lyrically focused it is, but some of y'all saw what I saw in this round too, so I'm gonna take that as a win.

9th: Nearly Dead Bat Make-Up by Pin Up Went Down
Submitted by TAC

Ariich: 9th
Buddy: 13th
Dacul: 10th
Evermind: 14th
Litho: 9th
Luke: 6th
Puppies: 7th
TAC: 3rd

Total: 71

Pretty big gap here from the last one, funnily enough. Not for anyone love-loving this one, it seems, most just liked it fine enough and that's kinda where I am on it too  :lol Could've picked Carchose or Atropas, idk, this one seemed funniest to pick though.

The rest are coming later today after the next set of writeups! I'm at 10/16 right now, should be good to finish today, just need to get the energy for it.

This alone disqualifies him from winning your roulette, right?  :neverusethis:

And mine getting ranked 14th means I'm for sure no DTF barometer either.    Kinda disappointed with all the electronic music fans ranking it so low, but oh well.

Yeah that LCD Soundsystem song is great, and that album is quite good.

Also, the singer on Pin Up Went Down seems to be the singer on öOoOoOoOoOo, a very cool and fun similar project, but way better imo.

I originally had it a lot lower than 8th. :lol

Also Strangers being the highest-ranked of the electronic songs while I ranked it the lowest is funny. But also not that surprising because of how inoffensively average it is.

Someone Great definitely doesn't deserve the bottom spot even though it was in the middle for me. The production and melodies are nice even though it's very repetitive.

It stood out immediately when I heard the album, but I can see why it might not grab most people's attention in a 16-song playlist.  I had a suspicion Sacul might rank it the highest.  I have a truckload of other moody and sparse tracks I love but wouldn't dare send in the average roulette, but might send in his or similar ones.

Bonus Game Results, Pt. 2

8th: The Glow, Pt. 2 by The Microphones
Submitted by Dacul

Ariich: 8th
Buddy: 14th
Dacul: 1st
Evermind: 3rd
Litho: 15th
Luke: 8th
Puppies: 9th
TAC: 12th

Total: 70 points

Well here's another one I didn't expect to do quite so well! Turns out weird noise rock slash folk slash ??? is more DTF-core than <literally any electronic song> or <literally leonard cohen> who knew.

7th: Replica by Gacharic Spin
Submitted by Lonestar

Ariich: 4th
Buddy: 7th
Dacul: 12th
Evermind: 13th
Litho: 6th
Luke: 9th
Puppies: 4th
TAC: 7th

Total: 62 points

Another big jump but that's because we're getting up closer towards "metal that DTF would enjoy" yeah. Not much to say other than that this is a rocker.

6th: Woman in Chains by Tears For Fears
Submitted by HOF

Ariich: 12th
Buddy: 11th
Dacul: 8th
Evermind: 6th
Litho: 5th
Luke: 11th
Puppies: 2nd
TAC: 6th

Total: 61 points

Surprised Literally Tears For Fears didn't do at least a little better honestly. Like it's not one of their most well-known songs or anything but it is a well-respected band from the 80's so.

5th: Captain Awkward by Moron Police
Submitted by King

Ariich: 2nd
Buddy: 2nd
Dacul: 15th
Evermind: 12th
Litho: 13th
Luke: 2nd
Puppies: 5th
TAC: 4th

Total: 55 points

Now we get to the "songs most people really liked that had a few naysayers bringing it down" section of the list. Nobody put this 1st and I'm kinda surprised by that! It's really good.

4th: Come Alive (War of the Roses) by Janelle Monáe
Submitted by Puppies

Ariich: 10th
Buddy: 15th
Dacul: 2nd
Evermind: 4th
Litho: 7th
Luke: 7th
Puppies: 1st
TAC: 8th

Total: 54 points

Again with the naysayers, though they're not as pronounced this time. Pleased to see this one do so well though, Janelle is great :)

3rd: Cosmic by Avenged Sevenfold
Submitted by Luke

Ariich: 6th
Buddy: 6th
Dacul: 5th
Evermind: 7th
Litho: 12th
Luke: 1st
Puppies: 8th
TAC: 5th

Total: 50 points

Luke getting DTF to collectively agree that an Avenged Sevenfold song is pretty good, what a day :lol This actually wins the prize for "song with the highest lowest placement" out of the entire bunch, but most of the scores besides were in the 5-8 range (NUGGETZ) so it couldn't quite make the top two.

2nd: Void of Words by Chapel of Disease
Submitted by Buddy

Ariich: 7th
Buddy: 1st
Dacul: 16th
Evermind: 5th
Litho: 10th
Luke: 3rd
Puppies: 6th
TAC: 1st

Total: 49

Now THIS was a surprise. Maybe it's the old school-ness of this that made it work for a lot of people, maybe it's just because it does, y'know, rock. Didn't even come close to the top spot though, which, well.

1st: Night's Descending by Kingcrow
Submitted by Tomi

Ariich: 1st
Buddy: 10th
Dacul: 13th
Evermind: 1st
Litho: 2nd
Luke: 4th
Puppies: 3rd
TAC: 2nd

Total: 36 points

Okay, yeah, I should've picked a different song here, my bad  :lol Literally everyone but two people putting this in their top 4 'cause, I mean, it's The Prog Rock Song that sounds like good prog. Maybe I could've put Respire on instead for some black metal heaviness, idk, anyways congrats I guess  :lol

I think Crow that Moron Police is not for everyone. Love love that their quirky,  and still have such catchy choruses.

I could say that it's based on two listens and I could barely remember either when ranking them.  :p  But I just listened to both again and stand by my initial ranking of those.  There's some A7X stuff I like (City of Evil is particular is a pretty good album), but "Cosmic" was just ok.  I've never really cared for M. Shadows' voice for one thing.  "Nearly Dead Bat Make-Up" just has cooler stuff going on in it.

WRITE-UPS!

1: Chapel Of Disease - Void Of Words
I wasn't against the prospect of one of these other songs overtaking my own submission, but it didn't end up happening! Captain Awkward came kinda close though. The riffs, energy, and fantastic guitar soloing at the end just put this above everything else in the playlist for my own enjoyment. And it's not even my favorite song from this album. ;)

2: Moron Police - Captain Awkward
This was a real grower and kind of the music I wish Haken was making these days. It's quirky, proggy, and kinda cheesy, but it doesn't get bogged down by too much technicality or weirdness for the sake of weirdness (the verses come the closest to this, but they don't take up much of the song). The song knows to let its relatively simple but powerful melodic ideas shine, and it's hard not to love the energy here. And that little section in the middle with the saxophone is just awesome. There weren't many songs in the playlist that left me wanting to check out the albums they're from, but this is certainly an exception.

3: Clarence Clarity - Will To Believe
I kinda don't blame people if they rank this super low, as it took me a few listens to really wrap my head around what's going on here. But once you get past the weirdness, it's actually a pretty simple song. It's got a nice swanky groove and the production is super creative, but it's really that chorus that carries the whole thing. I love the bright, uplifting wall of sound it has, especially at the very end where he pulls out all the stops to just make it sound as huge as possible.

4: Silversun Pickups - Empty Nest
This doesn't quite cross over the threshold of being great for me, but it's a nice little song with a very warm atmosphere, bright melodies and some really glossy but tasteful production. The verses could be a bit better, but the two-part choruses definitely make up for it.

5: Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat
Stripped-back, singer/songwriter folk usually does nothing for me, but damn is the dark atmosphere on this song powerful. It just sucks you in and demands your attention with how hopelessly dreary it is. I think if this were just vocals and acoustic guitar it'd still be too minimalistic for me, but the subtle strings and background vocals provide just enough depth and fullness to keep the song interesting.

6: Avenged Sevenfold - Cosmic
Yeah, I only listened to this album once, but this is clearly the standout song from it. The first three minutes are the best part, with the slow-building intro and the theatrical but not too over-the-top lead guitars. The vocals also have an evocative, worn-down quality to them that fits the vibe well. The rest of the song is decent but maybe goes on for a bit too long, though I appreciate the decently-executed climax at the end.

7: Gacharic Spin - レプリカ
This song has some great energy and awesome bass work, but apart from the chorus it's not all that catchy. The fast spoken-word verses feel a bit underwritten to me. There's a lot of potential here, and the best parts of it are awesome, but on the whole it's lacking the execution to reach the very top of my rankings.

8: KANGA - Untie
I didn't think much of this song at first, as there's really not all that much going on for most of it, but the dark atmosphere eventually won me over to some extent. And once the intensity kicks up in the second half, there's not much to not like. I wish it went a bit harder than it did, as I like my synthwave heavy, but for what it is this is pretty good.

9: LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great
This song's nice but it kinda overstays its welcome. The production is good and the melodies are well-written but structurally the song is very repetitive and just stays at the exact same intensity level for its entire six minutes, which leaves it feeling a bit monotonous. It's got a nice vibe, but to borrow a quote from Crow, I wish it did more. :neverusethis:

10: Kingcrow - Night's Descending
I've heard a couple other songs from these guys and between all of them this band just feels so... anonymous. Like, this is some competent progressive rock with a nice dynamic contrast between the soft and loud parts, and the guitar solo is quite good, but it doesn't leave me with anything I haven't heard done better by multiple other modern prog bands over the past 10+ years. It's not bad, but it feels extremely average for the genre.

11: Tears For Fears - Woman In Chains
This takes way too long to get going for me. Once it hits that beautiful climax at the end I'm certainly enjoying myself, but there's a good five minutes or so before that which just feel kinda boring to me. It's certainly lush and warm, but it's not a song I'd have much of a desire to sit through to get to the good bits.

12: Fractures - Strangers
This is nice while it's on but it might be the lowest-impact song in the whole playlist for me. The vocals are okay, the production is okay but not that creative, the melodies are nice but not that catchy... it's extremely good at being average.

13: Pin Up Went Down - Nearly Dead Bat Make-Up
This is like, two steps away from being legitimately annoying, but it's not quite there. :lol The weirdness doesn't feel particularly creative or unique here, but it's a fun enough song I suppose. It's at least nice and short and has some energy to it.

14: The Microphones - The Glow, Pt. 2
Sacul is usually at the top of my rankings, but not this time. :lol The last minute of this is the saving grace for me, as the rest of it is too loose and sloppy for my tastes. But the final stretch and the transition into it have a really nice atmosphere and sound to them - if the rest of the song were like that this would certainly rank a lot higher for me.

15: Janelle Monáe - Come Alive (War Of The Roses)
The longer my existence goes on the more I realize that Bad Devil is really the only swing-adjacent song I need in my life. It's just not a sound that does much for me, especially when it's as stripped-down as it is here. This also has a certain kind of theatricality that I pretty much never like. But it's short, and I appreciate how hard they are going with the vocal performance.

16: Blues Traveler - Escaping
While the Janelle Monáe song was also not for me, at least that song was nice and short. This just feels like it goes on and on despite only being five minutes flat. And while the song has a very laid-back vibe to it, the instrumentation is just loud and abrasive enough for it to not even work as pleasant background music for me. I just personally don't get anything from this one.

Okay, I want to be clear that the “I hate sand” pic I posted was before I’d listened to any songs and I just did it as a joke. It was not meant to reflect my opinion of the song. It’s just coincidence that it ended up being my least favorite of this round, and by a pretty large margin at that… where, like, every other song at least rewarded relistens to some extent, this one only ever got more… tedious.

It reminds me of the last Tool album – at its base level, very… competent, but both lacking ambition, playing things as safe as possible, and yet also having a need to be as overindulgent as possible, which… those two things don’t pair well, at all.

The end result is a song that’s very long, but doesn’t feel like it has a ton of meat on its bones? I hear a lot of the same grooves and melodies across its entire runtime, just like, varying in volume mostly. And the riffs are just kinda sludgy, the drums – which end up feeling like the lead instrument here, something that’s very hard to keep compelling for the length of a normal song, much less an epic – sound really dry. It’s a very… “muddy” sound, very brown and colorless.

Which, I guess. It does sound kinda like sand, in that sense? Mission failed successfully? The lyrics also kinda confuse me too because they seem to be about… taking a flight… like, an airplane… what does that have to do with sand? Ehh, y’know what, not gonna question it. At a very base level, this is fine, I just… don’t get much out of it.

6.5/10

HOF: Marillion – House

Hey wait, you’re not house music! That’s Justice’s job! Anyways.

Yeah, my first impression of this was “I bet the lyrics will have some punch to them” and sure enough, yeah, they do kinda. About post-divorce loneliness and how the house they owned together now feels empty without her. Or something like that. And yeah, there’s definitely something to that, even if, as someone who loves living along, I cannot really relate :lol

And let me clarify, a song being very one-note isn’t inherently a bad thing. I like some very one-note songs. That LCD Soundsystem song I loved, is pretty one-note. But the level of enjoyment I get from very one-note, kinda repetitive songs like this basically depends on how much I like that one note, ‘cause if it’s great I never want to end, and if it’s just… fine, well, it gets tedious after a while.

It’s a very pleasant song, to be sure. It sounds really nice, there’s some lovely playing, it all glides over the ears very easily and there’s nothing about it I really dislike, I just… kinda lack for strong feelings towards it? Its sheer pleasantness only goes so far for me. I remember kinda feeling the same way towards Marbles, which I was sent a few roulettes back, so… dunno, maybe this band just isn’t for me.

7/10

Dacul: Justice – Planisphere

I’m not a huge Daft Punk fan. They tend to write good grooves but I swear every other one of their songs either has no supporting melody beyond the groove and/or goes on way too long to justify itself. And Justice kinda seems like they exist in that same lane. Like yep. This sure is a 17 minute house/dance track primarily built around one groove.

That’s reductive, because they do quite a few things with that groove – variations on volume, variations on rhythm, some really cool moments like that really choppy segment or the guitar solo towards the end – but by god, seventeen minutes? Really?

Like, see, I’d be totally on board for like, 5-6 minutes of this, stripped down to its most exciting and kinetic parts, but as it stands those parts are so swamped out in the sheer volume of the song that they kinda get lost in the shuffle. Pair that with a sound that’s, again, not really my thing, and… yeah, not quite doing it for me.

I think this did get a little boost just from being, well. More uptempo and exciting than the Demians or Marillion songs because, wow yeah, at least I can bop along to this one a little when I notice I’m still listening to it, it’s got the bare fundamentals to make it an effective dance track and maybe it kills at clubs ‘cause the fun never ends, but for me… not inclined to come back to it, even if it’s. Alright, yeah.

7/10

Luke: Kirk Hammett – High Plains Drifter

While this isn’t the song this round I liked the least, it’s easily the song I have the least thoughts on, so I’m gonna keep this brief. First thought: Wow, yeah, you can tell Hammett is Metallica’s melody guy and Hetfield is the dude who writes most of the riffs ‘cause this has the exact sense of melody of a lotta Metallica’s best tunes, just, sans the heaviness. I like that about it.

I do wish it got to the heavy parts, like, a little faster though, ‘cause the two and a half minutes of strings and clean guitar get a liiiittle tedious to sit through multiple times. Yeah, yeah, they’re establishing melodies the heavier parts build off of and that back half slays but, man, it’s a lot of buildup that could’ve been sped up. It’s cool though. I’m not too invested in Metallica or their side projects but this isn’t a song I mind having added to my life!

7/10

Litho: Scardust – Concrete Cages

Okay, I gotta know… is Patty Gurdy the singer or, like, the uhh, hurdy gurdy player? And if the latter is that actually her name? I could easily google the answer to both these questions but it's funnier to ask here as if I don't already know the answer. I do know the answer. Don’t @ me.

Anyways, uhh, yeah, this is a pretty solid little folk metal tune! Maybe lightly proggy, maybe lightly Nightwish-y, hell, I suspect the latter is the lane this band usually stays in and the folk elements are only here for this song, but they’re. Fine enough elements! It’s kinda cheesy, but, I kinda expect that out of this kind of sound.

The biggest gripe I have here is that this is, like, a pretty good 5-ish minute song that’s just a bit too long for what it is. Pushes a bit too far in the direction of its hook, mostly, it feels kinda repetitive by the end. Though I don’t know that it being a minute or two shorter would vastly improve my opinion on it or anything, ‘cause the style’s also just, not quite my thing, but… I like this fine enough? It’s solid.

7/10

Faizoff: Nevermore – The Learning

Okay, this is a weird comparison to make, but… this song almost, kinda gives me A Forest of Stars vibes? The vocals that get, kind of unhinged, the very riff-driven 6/8 feel throughout, the kinda, one-note-y ness of it? It’s definitely not a one-to-one comparison, especially in the opening minutes of the song, but once it really kicks into gear… I kinda hear it?

I only really bring this up because I have no clue what else to say about ths song beyond the cool riffageness of it. I have listened to it four times and it has neither grown nor shrunk on me even the tiniest bit in that time. It’s a good metal tune. Kinda proggy, kinda thrashy, kinda melodeath-y, kinda folk metal if I’m gonna make my AFoS comparison stick. It doesn’t really change much after it kicks in and ends rather abruptly, but it’s a fun enough ride while I’m listening, so!

7/10

Tomi: Symphony X – When All is Lost

I think, part of the problem here, is that I’ve just. Never been very excited by power-prog. Never been too into it. Never been too against it, either, it’s just. Not where my tastes in prog lie. I listen to this and I get what I expect out of it, nothing less and nothing more.

I do get the sense that this wants to evoke a big emotional response, between the piano prominence, the grand, soaring epic feel, the big solo towards the end… and like, again, I like all of that. There’s power here, there’s cool riffs and leads, passionate vocals… but man, prog metal is just, not the sound I tend to gravitate towards when I want big emotional moments. At least, not in this specific way.

I need to stress again that I think this is good and the problem lies more with me and how… uninteresting, I find this sound, and to someone more into the sound I’m sure this hits a lot harder, but… this isn’t doing a ton for me beyond a very base level enjoyment, sorry.

7/10

Lonestar: Ok Goodnight – The Mountain

Seeing all the buzz about this album, seeing the absolutely beautiful album cover, it was kinda disappointing to find out that it’s just, uhh. Djent-prog. Like, pretty good djent-prog! Lotta energy, striking vocals, a lot of color and texture in the mix, it’s not just Periphery Clone #819 or whatnot, but it does still kinda come with a lot of the same trappings as this sound usually does.

For one, uhh. It’s very in-one-ear-out-the-other for me. That’s the big issue I have with a lot of djent-prog – no strong hooks (which, circling back to the earlier example of Periphery, that’s the one big thing they got right that made them popular), no memorable riffs, nothing that really sticks in the brain once the song ends and you move onto the next one.

Is it fair to knock this for not really being very catchy? Maybe it’s not trying to be, y’know? But that’s a lot of how I find appeal in music – if I can, like, remember what it sounds like, I’m gonna like it more than something similar but unmemorable.

That’s not to knock how cool the moment-to-moment listening experience is because, again, they are doing a LOT more to stand out than most bands in this genre – and I’m at least curious enough to check out the album now – but I’m still a biiiit cautious about this one all the same. I’m giving you the higher of the two scores I was debating here but it’s CLOSE, let me tell ya.

Ariich: Teramaze – Delusions of Grandeur

Congrats Ariich. You managed to gain just enough of a lead and then pull out the safe picks towards the end to guarantee a high enough score that your closest competitors wouldn’t be able to beat you out even if they sent the best song of the entire roulette :lol Like, all the suspense of “who would win” was gone the moment I saw you and Tomi both send really safe prog metal picks, but hey, makes my job easier I guess.

Anyways uhh yeah this is more prog metal. I don’t know if it’s quite fair to lump this in with power-prog but it has the same… vibe, to me, even if it’s realistically closer to 00’s Dream Theater than anything.

And it’s rock solid in its sound! The riffs are there, the leads are there, the solos are there, even the vocals and hooks are there, it’s got solid progression and payoff, a good balance of heavy and melodic… and yet I am wholly uninterested, because it’s almost too perfect in all those regards. It all sounds good but it has absolutely no personality to it. I could get this from any band in this lane.

That sounds really mean but god is there something ironic about “progressive” metal being so soundalike and recycled in its sounds. This was what all prog metal sounded like in the 2000’s and early 2010’s, and then it all shifted to the djent-prog sound around the middle of the decade, which is where we’re stuck now.

I feel like that’s just, a big part of why I’m so uninterested in the genre when it’s not, like, prog death or prog black metal or whatever. Like, sorry for going on a rant about the state of the prog metal scene in the middle of a writeup for this, admittedly, above-average prog metal tune, but I don’t really have much to say about the song in its unspectacular rock-solidness, and it’s all relevant to the song anyways, so… yeah, uhh. This sure is solid prog metal, I guess.

7.5/10

Vmadera: Fit For An Autopsy – The Man That I Was Not

More and more I’m finding that deathcore has a tendency to have some really killer guitar tones, and while that’s great, I… wish they were put to better use. Just in general, not necessarily a critique of this song, which is honestly about as good as the genre gets for me without reaching a Warforged or Slice the Cake level of ambition, honestly.

Like, the riffs have the usual deathcore dull, grey sludginess, but the production is filled out enough that there’s still a sense of scale and grandiosity to the whole ordeal, and even a decent bit of color and melody. And it’s not like, say, Lorna Shore where the sound is cool but is so one-note that none of it stands out past the wall of sound.

The slower riffing at the end doesn’t inspire quite as much in me, admittedly, but the refrain over it kinda balances it out and makes it a pretty cool outro despite that? Nothing about this sound or this song, like, especially catches my interest, it’s more just a really good example of a sound I don’t tend to care for, but hey, that’s something, man, they’re definitely doing something right!

7.5/10

Stadler: Yes – Awaken

Pretty much all of the (70’s) Yes I know is from Close to the Edge or Fragile so this one’s a… bit, different to my ears, but it does still do a lot of what I like from Yes. Chaotic & wild guitar playing, grand, cinematic scope, and it all just Sounds very good. On that level, this is a pretty good Yes tune!

But then I can’t help but compare it to the Yes I do know, and… hmm. Well, for one, the basslines seem a lot less pronounced? That was like, the biggest thing I always knew Yes for but the bass gets kinda lost in the mix here a lot of the time, which is a shame. And the song overall feels… loose and sloppy?

Like, I’m used to these guys having a very tight energy, even with their more chaotic edge. This feels less like a band working as a unit and more just… stuff happening? And I also don’t think the, like, hooks and melodies are as pronounced as I’d like, this is a lot of good music but most of it just glides over my brain without really sticking.

It does all still sound good, very good even! But it doesn’t quite click the same for me, I guess? I definitely enjoy the more uptempo first half more than the slower second half, I can say that for sure. And there’s a ton of cool leads, a lush soundscape, just, a lot of what I like from these guys without quite hitting the same level as your Close to the Edges or Roundabouts, y’know? I do need to check out this band more though, yes yes.

7.5/10

Seneca: Circle Takes the Square – A Crater to Cough In

Well first of all, congrats on successfully submitting a song off an album I’ve actually covered on my channel before! It’s been a while since I listened to the album though ‘cause I didn’t end up, like, buying it, so, I’m allowing it.

This has probably benefitted the most from relistens out of every song here ‘cause I wasn’t too hot on it the first listen or two, but then it kinda just, clicked for me. It’s a long, slow build in that first half based around just the one melodic motif, but there’s a lot happening underneath and around it and momentum is building up, so it’s not like, boring or anything.

Then the song really kicks into gear and gets chaotic and mathcore-y almost, and this part was kinda incomprehensible and lacking in, uhh, song-ness to me. A lot of cool noise that all sounded the same. With vocals I… don’t really care for :lol But the more I listened the more I realized, a LOT of what it does during these parts is actually built around that same motif, just in all sorts of garbled, frantic ways. And I think that’s what makes it work!

And yeah, like, screamo/hardcore of this variety is always gonna be a winning sound for me, especially in a round this packed to the brim with prog, so I’m kinda glad I did come around on this one by the end. Guess I need to go back to this album, again, ‘cause maybe I’d be more into it now than I was the first time around :lol

7.5/10

Reaper: The Raconteurs – Thoughts and Prayers

This feels like a weird song to have this high up in this round of all round, but like. It’s just nice :) I enjoy listening to it :) Like, Jack White making a folksy country-type song in 2019 with… a particularly loaded title – that doesn’t really have much to do with the lyrics themselves, which are admittedly a bit milquetoast on their own, but whatever man!

Mostly the melodies are pleasant, the guitar has a nice rollick to it, and damn that fiddle does go off though. I can call it a fiddle here, it’s definitely fiddling. It’s fine. Don’t worry. I dunno, this is just, such a simple song by this round’s standards and I don’t really have a ton to say about it, but simplicity wins out when it’s just, plain and simply this good, man!

7.5/10

Puppies: Others by No One – Dr. Breacher and the Time Travel Anomaly

See, you get me and the type of prog I tend to love. This is… so BTBAM it hurts. Or like, Deconstruction at points, almost. You know, weird, intense, wacky prog metal that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still goes hard and has a LOT going on. As far as metal-metal in this round goes it’s the one that hits the hardest out of all the songs this round, even if it’s kiiiiind of an incoherent mess – but hey, at least it’s a colorful, intense incoherent mess!

Like, yeah, I’m definitely gonna need more than four listens to this almost twenty minute song to really take it all in, but the important thing there is that I want to come back to it and keep listening to it past the end of this round. And it’s not like I haven’t heard any of these sounds before, but it’s like, a case study on “well if you’re not gonna do anything new, the least you could do is a TON of different tried-and-tested things!”

Like, they’re at least willing to take big swings, even if not necessarily all of them work – and for my money, I can’t point to any moments here I actively dislike, just, like, broadly speaking here – and that’s kinda just, what attracts me to music. Either some kind of deep, emotional power… or pure ambition. This is definitely more the latter!

I can’t really point to any moments that, like, particularly stand out here ‘cause, again, twenty minutes is a LOT to take in, but I mostly just appreciate that there’s a lot of, like, actual heaviness to this without ever devolving into monotone chugging or incomprehensible noise. And I like incomprehensible noise sometimes, don’t get me wrong – hello Clarence Clarity – but this is genuinely just 20 minutes of great prog metal, and… yeah, I like that a lot!

8/10

TAC: NORD – The Only Way to Reach the Surface

This is not quite the best song of the round, but it’s easily the song that’s most up my alley in terms of raw sound. It’s just. Sixteen minutes of progressive post-hardcore/melodic metalcore. I love that sound. I love having sixteen straight minutes of it. I don’t care that it’s kinda shapeless and very “just goes on and on” in terms of structure, I enjoy all its pieces too much to care.

Like, the transient instrumental moments here really stand out, moreso than any other song in this round. The guitars just sound so good, man. And the leads are technical and melodic in all the right ways, the riffs crush, the vocals… are a little weak, okay, that’s the only big criticism I have of this song, and it’s definitely too long, but at the same time, everything that’s on offer here I just, really like, so…

Like, I kinda get out of this what I’ve always wanted from The Fall of Troy, kinda? I’ve listened to their proggier stuff and it’s never quite hit the same, this is a lot closer to what I was looking for. All it really lacks in that department is strong hooks – which, even a big long epic can still have, Celestial Elixir and Swim to the Moon are both right there – but that’s at most a minor gripe when the experience of listening to this one gives me basically everything I want. Just. Good music!

8/10

Buddy: Parannoul & Asian Glow – Wheel

It’s very funny that this roulette started and ended with you just, absolutely cleaning house. Nearly winning round 1 and then unquestionably winning round 8 with the last proper competitor for “best song of the roulette”. Like, I’ve heard about Parannoul before, at least, but… I did not expect them to sound like this. Do they usually sound like this?

The song does take a bit of time to really get off the ground, but, well, for one, that buildup is still pretty dang good, and once it does it just, SOARS for ten straight minutes. With some fun twists thrown into the mix on top of it all. The harsher, almost hardcore-esque bits come out of nowhere and I LOVE them.

Only thing I don’t really love about this is that weird fake ending that kiiiinda kills the momentum, but the song bounces back from it pretty handily and by god do the best parts of this just, sound utterly transcendent. Even with the kinda muddy guitar tones, everything comes together to make some absolutely gorgeous, and more importantly, high energy music! Beautifully uptempo. Yeah.

I think these top two are an example of that paradigm where like, NORD is more consistently great and more up my alley, but this just, easily has the higher high points. And a LOT of ‘em, too. like, half the song is handily better than even the best stuff in NORD, so… yeah, this is just really goddamn good. What a way to end off this long, drawn-out roulette, eh?

8.5/10

Final Standings:
Ariich – 62
Puppies – 60.5

What was my score? 8.5? Didn't this happen once before, too? :rollin

But yeah, that song's pretty fuckin' killer. It is definitely more aggressive than Parannoul usually is, but his other stuff still has the huge, soaring melodies and massive walls of sound. His latest album is a lot more mellow, but I think you'd like it, it kinda reminds me of Nurture at times. To See The Next Part Of The Dream is definitely my favorite, despite the production being not great. The best songs on that album are just an emotional punch to the face. And you've already heard half of the Paraglow spit, so might as well start with that, there's some good shit in the first half too!

oh yeah congrats ariich

And wow Scaul and I were really the odd men out on Kingcrow, huh? Just cuz it's a prog rock song doesn't mean it's amazing, folks. :lol

No, but by default it does make it better than most of the other tripe in this bonus round.

This came up on my new releases list this week and technically counts as a roulette album so I figured I might as well check it out and yyyyyep pretty much what I expected. I'm okay with this sound in small doses but an entire album of it is kind of. Exhausting and samey  :lol Did not get all the way through, maybe I shouldn't be listening to it this late at night but this being a miss for me was kind of a foregone conclusion, I feel. Gave it a shot at least  :lol

I was hoping Others By No One would be just crazy enough to give me the come from behind win in the 11th hour. Especially considering both Ariich and Tomi sent straight up safe prog metal.

Oh well.

oh also i meant to reply to this earlier but your entire roulette was basically TANKED by your round 1 submission, if you had submitted a song on part with your average entry (straight 7.5's, 8's, and even an 8.5 after that!) you would've tied or even passed ariich at the very end.

i still dunno why you sent me that song  :lol

ariich was remarkably consistent all roulette tho, he and Tomi were the only two to never score below a 7

I still blame that round 1 submission on a temporary bout of insanity. Either that or I tried to get myself kicked out by pulling an Absu.

Yay I managed to cling on! :D :lol

Yeah that's all very fair. I feel that way about most bands in that style, I think what I like a lot about Teramaze is that they've refined the style and do it really well. Which I hoped you'd enjoy enough for a solid score even if you're down on the style itself, which seems to have paid off. But I appreciate it wasn't my most exciting submission.

Besides, I had to make it look like we weren't in collusion to win each other's roulettes. :neverusethis:

Ok...I can live with my girls getting 7th place among this crowd, though I am a bit disappointed that Rich only had it at 4 being basically the only other Gachapin fan here lol
I mean, it's my 2nd favourite album of the year and a few of the other songs from it I'd have ranked 1 or 2. Also it's your fault I love Night's Descending as you sent it to me in my v6 roulette. :P

And wow Scaul and I were really the odd men out on Kingcrow, huh? Just cuz it's a prog rock song doesn't mean it's amazing, folks. :lol
Obviously not, but this song happens to be amazing. I'm not even a huge Kingcrow fan, that's the only album of theirs I particularly like and that's easily the best song on it.

You have a tendency to do that in my roulettes too. Nothing terrible this time but two weaker ones (in that region of I quite enjoyed them despite them not being really my thing) which stopped you overtaking Crow despite your ludicrously good last 3 rounds.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.
I be am boner inducing.
