I don't know Queen outside of the hits

Same.

I therefore looked at the reveal today and thought Kev had made a mistake and was doing a countdown of his top 30 Dungeons & Dragons campaigns.

 :lol

Yea, some big nerd energy here. I'm looking forward to hearing the DTF top 30 and getting to grips with some deeper cuts (I assume).

Impressions time (never heard any of these songs):

March of the Black Queen: has kind of the same campiness of BR that I’ve gotten so tired of over the years. Not a fan of this one.

Ogre Battle: that’s a fun track! Didn’t know Queen got that heavy.

Seven Seas of Rhye: kind of in between the other two tracks. A little less heavy than Ogre Battle, a little less campy than Black Queen. Enjoyable more or less.

Yea, I imagine there's gonna be a considerable amount of songs on the top 30 I don't know. So once it's all done, I'll go through and listen to all the ones I'm not familiar with. Very excited!

I had never heard this before Joe's disgoc thread. This was a fave right off the bat. It takes a bit to get going but once it does, it's awesome. A precursor to Bohemian Rhapsody.

I had Ogre Battle at #1!
I'm happy this made it. I had no idea how it stood amongst the Queen-dom. To me it kicks total ass.
And Ogre Battle > By Tor.

30 The March of the Black Queen
Appeared on 8 of 22 lists
Highest Finish: 6 (Mladen)
3 Top 10 Finishes

29 Ogre Battle

The Queen II album isn't an album that I really connect with so only 1 out of 3 for me.

The March of the Black Queen - unranked but this is a pretty cool track. The last couple of minutes especially are great.

Ogre Battle - unranked and is a bit all over the shop but also does have a certain charm. Is definitely heavy in places with that riffing and tom work.

Seven Seas of Rhye - well I nailed this one. Also 28 on my list. Love the piano intro and this song just has a really great infectious driving groove.

The March of the Black Queen   N. 10
As TAC said, this is a proto Bohemian Rhasody. Along with the vibe of the first three albums, what is not to love? I thought this would rank much higher - if a song this iconic places only 30th, future probably doesn't bode too well for my other favorites from the Q1,Q2 and SHA. Seems this countdown is going to be geared toward "the hits".

Ogre Battle                                        NR
Seven Seas of Rhye                            NR

Ogre Battle would certainly have been in my Top 5O, SSOR would be somewhere on the borderline.

Here are today's featured songs!

27 Keep Yourself Alive
Appeared on 12 of 22 lists
Highest Finish: 10 (ReaperKK)
1 Top 10 Finish

In the annals of best track 1 off a band's debut album, this sits pretty high on my list.  Great song, one I ranked 22nd.  The classic Queen sound was in place right out of the gate!

26 ‘39
Appeared on 10 of 22 lists
Highest Finish: 2 (MoraWintersoul, KevShmev)
2 Top 10 Finishes

I was a bit dismayed to see my 2nd favorite Queen song get left off so many lists, but we all like what we like, right?  This has long been one of my favorite songs by the band, and it's one I can always listen to and enjoy the hell out of, even when not in a major Queen phase.  Awesome song.

Keep Yourself Alive (#44) - My favourite from the debut album. A nice rocker, indeed. Don't know why it isn't higher up for me.

'39 (#14) - A lovely little folk influenced acoustic song about space travel. I always sing along in the chorus. Check out those soaring high vocals in the middle (by Roger?).
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

I didn't think that Keep Yourself Alive would rank as high as it did initially until I started putting it against other songs on my list. It's just a great tune.

'39 (#15) - A great little tune, I liked the performance of it at the queen tribute show.

Keep Yourself Alive was on my brain when I said "my 31 through 50 could be a greatest hits all on it's own" or something like that.  Great tune - especially some of the live versions, and the version from the On Air set - but there are better.

30 The March of the Black Queen  NR  dropped out of my Top 30 when the list was shrunk down from 50. For those who want to hear it without it segueing into 'Funny How Love Is', here is a pretty decent creation that appeared on a 'Deep Cuts' release.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWQQMgf2QaM

I would wager that this would make 18 of 22 lists on an expanded countdown

29 Ogre Battle  NR  (Top 75)  a mainstay on the Queen II through 'A Day at the Races' tours, with the guitar intro similar to their BBC version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntn-8hLmREU

28 Seven Seas of Rhye  NR  (Top 50)

27 Keep Yourself Alive  #26
to think this turns fifty years young!  Can't disagree with it being one of the best 'debut' songs.  It is also only one of two tracks where Freddie, Brian, and Roger each get at least one line of lead vocals ('Let Me Live' being the other)

26 '39  #29  I originally had this at #39  :D.  A real treat to see this on the small, lowered acoustic stage during the 'Jazz/Live Killers' tour.  A pity it didn't stay in the setlist longer (though it has been a mainstay for Q+PR and Q+AL).  And yes, Roger does the 'dog whistle' vocals  :tup.
...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

Keep Yourself Alive   #26

Before DragonAttack started his disc. thread, I had never listened to Queen outside the hits. The hits were so numerous and ubiquitous that I never felt like I might want more. But tihe moment I heard the first tones if QI album and Keep Yourself Alive got rolling, I knew early Queen could be something I could go on enjoying long after exploration stage. There is even better stuff on QI than this one but this is definitely one of the standout songs.

´39   NR

Would have been a lock for my Top 50. I am still rather surprised to see it make Top 30 and ranked and making it to n. 2 on some lists. I mean, it is just a country song with a bit of Queen treatment. And seeing how the country songs did in Metallica countdown, I didn't think ´39 would do so well here.

I'm not much a fan of the first two albums, but Keep Yourself Alive (#14) is one of the most amazing discography openers that I've ever heard! And really set the mold for Queen's very original sound.

39 - unranked. A song I didn't at all consider for my top 30 and one I have probably been a bit dismissive of but listening to it now I can enjoy it for what it is.

Always loved this song and still do. I ranked it 19th. I get that it might be too silly for some, but being able to pull off songs like this is not something most rock bands could do, but Queen did it so damn well.

Good song, but it went unranked for me. I suspect I'd listen to it more if it were on another album, but News of the World is such a slog to get through that this one just doesn't get enough plays for me to warrant getting ranked.  It was also unranked for me when I did a top 50.

Awesome song, one I ranked 6th.  I didn't get into Sheer Heart Attack until the mid 2000s, but when I did, this song (and the one after it), was such a revelation that it felt like winning the musical lottery.  Just an incredible piece of music, especially when partnered with Lily of the Valley.

Bicycle Race (#28) - A fun and quirky song, one of the standouts from Jazz for me.

Spread Your Wings (#15) - One of the few highlights on News Of The World. I've always enjoyed this one a lot. I remember hearing the Blind Guardian cover first!

Flick Of The Wrist (-) - Didn't make my Top 30 (not even Top 50!). Maybe that was too harsh, but nothing really stands out for me. It's good, but that's it.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.
