I have no idea who the old pilots were. I have no idea who the new pilots are.

Let's see. I know Michael, Booker, Saru, Tilly, Stamutz, the doctor dude........the girl with the robot part on her face? The other girl who was more robot?

But most of the people I know aren't on the bridge. They're in engineering. So I have no clue who most of that bridge crew is.

....the girl with the robot part on her face?

It was her and her other pal.....they were there from the beginning and then suddenly they're just gone. Again, Maybe it was explained somewhere in the story....but it wasn't done well. They were just a part of the show for many seasons then just gone.

I remember why she was no longer there.....she made that choice to not jump into the future with the rest of them because she'd been infected or something like that....ehh....I think that's what it was?? anyway....that character was killed off

I feel bad for the main pilot woman because her character was so annoying that it made me kind of hate her face. The good thing is that I've forgotten most of this travesty so if I see her in another movie it wouldn't cause a problem.

I think she sacrificed herself? I just remember her to some degree. Largely due to her unique look.

But yea, this show definitely has the least memorable cast of any ST I've ever seen. I can still probably all or most of the Enterprise crew, and even a number of the SNW crew. Obviously most people posting here can name anyone from TOS, TNG, DS9 or Voyager. Good or not, the characters were memorable and identifiable. But this was just Michael, Saru, the engineers who actually stood out, and a bunch of who cares on the bridge.

Detmer (robot eye) and her fellow pilot friend (I think called Owo) get written out by taking the ISS to a museum.   Aka Poochie died on his way back to his home planet....

As for the finale - it brought a ending to the show, and therefore I'm grateful I'll not have to watch anymore.  I maintain S2 was solid - but as soon as they went to the future (when the show really should have taken off) it went lame.

That's right.....another dumb story. Let's send two of the characters we 'know' and are supposed 'family' off for a cake walk trip to a museum. Why not send the no namers? 100% another decision based on getting certain demographics onscreen rather than just tell a good story.

S2 was good. And that was that.

Quote from: gmillerdrake on May 31, 2024, 12:42:35 PMWell...in this final season they decided to replace the two pilots of Discovery who'd been on the show the whole time with two other actresses....who, how do I say this without being a dick or sounding like a racist <snip>

You don't.  No one looks for nefarious motives when there's a shitty white actor on a show.  No need to do it here, either.

Has nothing to do with the quality of the actress's and everything to do with the shows history of shoehorning in unnecessary political/social agenda points.

There's a way to tastefully do it as a part of a story and then there's the way this show did it. One works.....one didn't.

for those who've never seen this, this is well worth checking out.

Star Trek: The Captain's Summit. Shatner, Nimoy, Stewart and Frakes with Whoopi in 2009.

"I have facility enough that I can throw down something, and play it, and play it correctly, and play it in time, but that doesn't make good records.  What makes good records for me, is when you capture a performance or you get some feeling that you get on tape and that you know you can't plan for it" -Kevin Gilbert

So a clickbaity thumbnail on YT posed the question "What is Star Trek's Darkest Episode." I didn't watch it, probably just AI generated crap, but it did get me thinking. I approached it from each series' darkest episodes, and came up with some pretty obvious choices. The one that confounds me, though is TNG. Those people just didn't do dark. It was all so cheery, even when they didn't want it to be.

So recognizing that everybody likely has their own definition of dark in this context, what is TNG's darkest episode? I came up with Schisms, which is certainly creepy as all get-out, or Power Play. Probably a bit too much action in the latter, though.

What else is there?

For what it's worth, I came up with:

The Empath--Obvious choice is obvious
???
Hard Time--See The Empath, although The Darkness and the Light is probably on up there.
Friendship One--It was this or Desination: Oblivion. I honestly don't know which I find darker, though theyr'e both super grim.
Observer Effect--The whole series was dark, honestly. This one is exceedingly so, though.

Polarbear

Tough for me to pick "The Darkest" episode, but there is a lot of candidates for different reasons.

Dark Frontier (VOY): Seven witnesses a civilization being assimilated, because she helps the Borg queen. People being brought on board the ship, and being assimilated with screams and cries was really disturbing when I first saw it. One of my favorite VOY episodes now.

In The Pale Moonlight (DS9): Seeing how far Garak pushes him in this episode, and him realizing what he has to do was heavy stuff.

Night Terrors (TNG): The whole mystery of sleep deprivation and insanity keeps this episode very intense, even though there is no action scenes or ship combat ETC. One of my absolute TNG faves.

There are other episodes with "dark" subject matters which are also excellent.

FreezingPoint

Maybe Frame of Mind from TNG? Would agree with Schisms, always liked that Holodeck scene where they put it together.

DS9 is tough for me. There are certainly episodes that hit hard for me, like Hard Time, Duet, or The Siege of AR558.

There's a 5 minute outtake up on YouTube of the new season of Strange New Worlds  :tup

Dear gods. I don't know who this is supposed to appeal to. Aside from the title, some pointy ears, and one person I vaguely remember from before, is there anything whatsoever Star Trek related in this? Hopefully it'll be so painfully bad that even the people who feel strangely compelled to watch anything ST will give this one a miss and it'll be quickly cancelled. Maybe then they'll knock this stupid shit off.

And honestly, the SNW thing didn't look much better. At least it was set somewhere Star Trek like, though.

Adami

Oh great!

They took everything I hate about modern Trek and condensed it into a show.

Skip!

Yeah, no thanks! Not for me.

SNW S3 preview looked fun though. Crew being stuck in Vulcan forms, feels like classic Star Trek wacky hijinks.

You beat me to it, I figured you and I would be some of the more vocal condemners of this . . . truly terrible. Roddenberry doing rollovers in his grave. A pathetic desperate attempt to appeal to a wider audience but sacrifice everything that makes the franchise special  :tdwn .

HOF

It's apparently a movie and not a series. From the description:

QuoteStar Trek: Section 31, a Paramount+ Original Movie, stars Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou who joins a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.

Star Trek: Section 31 will be available to stream exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and in all international markets where the service is available. The movie is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Still seems entirely pointless.

Adami

Oh great!

I feel way less bad about skipping a movie.

Section 31 trailer looks horrible but had zero interest in it anyway.

Loved the SNW season 3 clip. I didn't finish watching it as want to save it for when the actual show is out. :)

Reading Shatner's book entitled "Leonard". Awesome read covering decades of friendship. It's amazing how similar their backgrounds were, both being from immigrant Orthodox Jewish families, both grinding for years on TV, stage, and occasionally film before finally hitting it big. This is a deep dive into Nimoy the man and you discover how many talents he had.

The most impressive thing so far, and Shatner really does a brilliant job of highlighting this point, but the character Spock did not really exist on the page. Nimoy, with deep commitment, carefully created that character. Vulcan salute, mind meld, raised eyebrow, all from Nimoy's mind and ingenuity.

In case you can't tell, I highly recommend this book!

Saw the news yesterday, that's a bummer. He was fantastic as Vic.

El Barto

Vic was a great character, and like so many of those on DS9, didn't appear nearly as many times as you'd think. Seems like you saw him all the time, but he was only 7 episodes.

I'd forgotten he was TJ Hooker's sidekick (I only remember Zmed). What I remember Darren for is his hilariously stupid death in Guns of Navarone.
