2 on 2 Poll # 2: Ozzy vs Van Halen
« on: April 10, 2023, 06:26:12 AM »
This one is simple, as all four albums are from 1980 and 1981.

I will go with VH, as Fair Warning is easily my favorite of the four, and Blizzard, despite having some of Ozzy's best solo songs ever, is probably my least favorite of the four.

Well, this one is easy for me. As amazing as EVH is, I am not a huge fan of the band (although Fair Warning is my second favorite of the DLR era after the debut). On the other hand, I absolutely LOVE Ozzy's first two records.

So, Ozzy gets my enthusiastic vote here  :)

Never a large fan of Ozzy at all, so this one is easy.  Van Halen all the way.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Van Halen, I like a handful of Ozzy songs but otherwise I'm not really a fan.

Haven't heard these albums as much as their later ones, Ozzy is the more familiar one for me.

I went with VH, but seriously, talk about a 'Sophie's Choice'

Yeah, this is my take, as well. FW and WaCF are both top notch. Diary might be the best album of the four, but Blizzard is definitely the weakest. Tough call because both Women and Blizzard are seminal albums for me. Those are two of the three albums most responsible for setting me on the course that led to today.

This is another easy one.

For starters, the two VH albums are basically EPs.  The total running time of the two albums (64:46) is shorter than every DT studio album except WDADU, I&W and DOT.  WACF is the worst/least of the classic VH albums.  FW has my favorite VH song ever.

Diary >> Blizzard >> FW >>>>> WACF.

This is a tough one when I think about it. Van Halen was part of a musical foundation for me. Ozzy never really had that influence on me, but there's something a bit more enduring about the Ozzy albums though.

Plus thanks to Blizzard, it has led me to a lifetime of people serenading me.  :lol

Gonna lean Ozzy here.

Probably my two most favourite artists/bands of all time - Van Halen and Ozzy solo up to No More Tears.    Van Halen has the edge in terms of being my favourite/most influential overall but given the album choices I went with Ozzy just.

Indeed, the only copy of these 2 albums I have ever owned was a cassette from Columbia House or BMG that had WaCF on one side and Fair Warning on the other.  As such, I'm not sure which album is which at this point.

RWTD not so much, but I get your point. I also remember where I was when I first heard Mr. Crowley and Flying High Again.

Yep.
Agreed. Had it been the first two VH albums, then it would've been a much more difficult choice.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

This is similar to the last one in the sense that there is one album (Fair Warning) that I hold in GOAT status, and am pretty ambivalent toward the rest. I went with VH primarily for the one album, and also that outside of the hits I’m not crazy about either Ozzy album. SATO is a cool deep cut.

Diary Of A Madman > Fair Warning > Blizzard Of Ozz >>>>>>Women and Children First (even though it has my favorite VH song, "In A Simple Rhyme").   Ozzy.

Ozzy, but if this was a battle of the first two albums of each instead of the 1980-81 albums Van Halen would have been the answer.
