17 Lightbulb Sun (my ranking: 21)
Was wondering if this song might not make the list, but instead, it's actually slightly higher than my ranking! To me, this one is all about the tension that gets built up in the minor chords -- a tension that doesn't ever quite get resolved, until finally the song ends on an acoustic bit like it begins. Even the final acoustic chord is just a bit strange. The intensity of the chorus picks up each time it comes around, and I love the low-in-the-mix almost-screamed backing vocals on the last run through. A great track that drives the mood for the album right off the start.
Also, is it just me or is this song between pitches? As if they sped up or slowed down the tape just slightly?
16 Don’t Hate Me (my ranking: 7)
Another one I was wondering might not make the list, but it did, and I'm happy.
Sometimes I can take or leave lyrics, but these are some of my favorites that SW has ever written. They paint imagery of isolation, of dark loneliness. And the music is there to match -- it's dark and haunting and just a bit desolate. And, yeah, that's a top-tier instrumental break, Colin and Theo in particular. Easy top 10 pick for me.
Also, if you've never heard it, check out the song "London" -- it's an early SW demo that uses many of the lyrics from this song, but musically is much different and stripped down.
15 Fear of a Blank Planet (my ranking: Not Ranked)
Sometimes I can take or leave lyrics ... and sometimes I really just don't like them. And that's my problem with FOABP, an album that contains a lot of my favorite music from the Gavin era, but that I find lyrically grating almost straight through. The whole satirical written-in-first-person "I'm a bored MTV XBOX kid on prescription drugs" thing wears thin on me really quickly, and I never thought it was as clever as Steven seemed to think it was.
So, this song starts the album on the wrong foot for me lyrically. Musically, I like it, but I don't think it's anything particularly unique -- very PT-by-the-numbers coming off of Deadwing.
