Holy Sh*t!  Early Album of the Year contender right here.  Awesome death-thrash with some Cynic and Voivod influence mixed in.  Some really great riffs all over this album.

Just finishing this. Gotta admit, I didn't hear much Cynic in there personally, but it was still damn good, and I'll be coming back to it.

Agreed - I had originally mentioned Cynic only for some of the vocal effects. But it's super-tasty technical death/thrash, so it's all good!  :)

The Heavenwood album was a nice trip down memory lane...it's one of those (arguably) second-tier gothic metal album from the mid-90s (1996), mixing in influences from Moonspell, Icon-era Paradise Lost, Cemetary, early Crematory, maybe some Cathedral too. A bit long, but lots of nice melodies and moods. And the obligatory Sisters of Mercy-gone-metal song  (Moonlight Girl - so catchy, by the way)!

And today, a release from last Friday:

Acerus - The Caliginous Serenade

The classic metal project of Daniel Corchado, mastermind of death metal band The Chasm (some great death from these guys, btw). Didn't know about Acerus until, well, today. VERY cool vibe on this one. It's pretty epic, with lots of riffs and a generally darker atmosphere.

Incidentaly - not on streaming services (yet, at least). I checked it out on Bandcamp...

I checked out the Acerus either last week or the week before and it didn't do anything for me.

I thought you might be one of the DTFers who'd like it...but I guess not this time

I'm giving it a second listen as we speak, and it's hitting the spot for me! We'll see if it "sticks", but for now I'm enjoying it

I had to check my 2024 Releases Document, and Nope, I didn't save it. I can give it another shot on your word.

I know why I didn't save it....it's not on Spotify!

I'll give it another spin when it is streaming. The Youtube link I'm listening to kinda sucks. Yeah, this is pretty decent, but I need to hear it under better sound.

I always forget about this album when I listen to Immoral/Abbath/Demonaz's records.  The Storm I Ride still kicks ass.   :metal

Update: I saw nick_z posted this one a page back, but I didn't think to check this out until a friend told me about it yesterday.  So freaking good!  Give this a listen!

Blood Incantation - Luminescent Bridge

This EP features 2 tracks, one is heavy and one is some sort of ambient piece.

This 'death metal' band is quite special. They've released three albums thus far, one of which is a full-on ambient record which is amazingly good even within that genre itself.

These two tracks though, can't get enough. The atmosphere on both tracks is impeccable. The way 'Obliquity of the Ecliptic' kicks off gets my blood pumping like nothing else. In fact as a moderate death metal enjoyer this is really one of the best and most beautiful death metal songs I've heard outside of Opeth's classic albums.

Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase

About half-way through and my feelings for this album this album haven't really changed. It was the first solo record of Steven's that I thought took a dip in quality. The only real saving grace here is Guthrie, I stand by that some of Guthrie's best work was with Steven. That solo in Regret #9 is phenomenal.

Man, I also re-listened to this one recently and I couldn't disagree more - it's his peak as a solo artist. It graciously cuts back on the "nostalgia act" isms of his previous two, and amps up the atmosphere and emotional impact, which is a win-win for me. One thing that surprised me is how good most of the lyrics on it are. Steven's lyrical abilities aren't always that... consistent, but there's some lines on here that hit fucking hard, especially now that I'm older and can relate to the themes of social isolation in adult life more. If Fear Of A Blank Planet resonated with me as an angsty, overtly-depressed teenager, HCE resonates with me where I'm at now. Higher-functioning, but dealing with more complex emotions and experiences that don't have as clear of a source or direction.

Tastes! How do the other solo works compare?

Eitrin - Eitrin

A project with Vindsval, the genius behind Blut Aus Nord. Expect the typical Blut Aus Nord dissonant riffs with female vocals and a lot of ambient keys.
This one will be in heavy rotation over the next week or so.

Two from today...

First time ever listening to Tommy and I enjoyed it a fair bit. I do quote like a bit of The Who every now and then.

Mr Bungle. Well I've listened to three Mr Bungle albums this week and they just don't do anything for me. I like my fair share of "weird" music, but they just aren't my jam. I've heard many times that the new Avenged Sevenfold is them trying to release a Mr Bungle style record,  but honestly if that's the case then Avenged Sevenfold do Mr Bungle better than Mr Bungle do.
