Hmm, interesting.  Gorguts is one of those bands that usually lands in the sweet spot.  But many of the bands that are inspired by them don't.

Continuing my theme of mid to latter albums by classic bands..

Kind of a lot of suckage today..
I do like the Yngwie though.

Angel of Retribution is pretty good

Nah :) far from being upper-tier JP, of course, but there’s some reasonably good stuff in it. And the is not from someone that was holding his breath for Halford’s return, at the time.

The song is. The album blows. ;D

Out of curiosity, how close to a hypothetical JP bottom of the barrel would you put it?

Bottom 5 easy. Not counting the Ripper albums.

(Apologies for messing up quoting a couple of posts up…on my phone and I tapped in the wrong spot)

I’m thinking what I’d rank lower…probably

Rocka Rolla, Point of Entry, Turbo (probably), Ram it Down, Jugulator, Demolition, Nostradamus (probably) and Redeemer of Souls

So I guess excluding the Ripper albums, not terribly different (don’t know about your specific bottom 5, of course). Except I definitely don’t think it blows ;)

All candidates for a Bottom 5 for sure.

Yeah, Turbo and Ram It Down for sure. Point Of Entry does indeed suck, and I don't hate Rocka Rolla, but yeah, it's probably the weakest of the 70's albums. Redeemer isn't great, but the production is awful.

I like and respect Nostradamus. It's their The Astonishing I guess. It's a left turn that works to me. I think Angel is really weak, and as a comeback album, it's quite disappointing.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Wait, there's no song of that name on the album.  I haven't listened to it since shortly after it came out.  There is "Angel" though.  I can't help but hear 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite" in that intro though.   :lol

Outside of Demonizer, Judas Rising and Hellrider, the album is pretty weak.  Lochness is a fun novelty with an incredible Tipton solo, but it's hard to take it seriously.

Redeemer is their worst for me.  Nostradamus I've grown to appreciate a lot.  There's some cracking songs on there but probably still finds itself in the bottom 5.  Rocka Rolla would be bottom 5 and probably Demolition too.  RID has some of Glenn's best playing but is very spotty in quality, and Turbo is......Turbo.  POE is an interesting and enjoyable album but probably down there also.

So, AOR is probably middle to bottom tier for me.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

for me JP is one of those bands that none of their albums are "bad" to me. Worst they get is mediocre. Which certainly describes Angel of Retribution. 3 or 4 songs that I really like and the rest sounds like filler.

For as much as a metal fan as I am, I am an extremely casual listener to Judas Priest, other than a handful of 4 or 5 albums.

Only saw them once on that tour...and seeing them again this fall as well. Might be the last time...

I do too, but I love Dystopia as well.

Been a while since I hit Thirteen and Supercollider so I'm going to try and hit those soon. They're probably the two weakest points of their 2000's run. But man, what a run it has been.

I hadn't revisited the Madder Mortem debut album in quite a while, and it's better than I remembered it. Not quite as unique/distinct sounding as what would come later - to some extent, this is more in line with the melancholic/gothic female-fronted sound of that period. But there was already something about them. Some real nice moods and songs in here, for sure.

Excited about their new one tomorrow.

Dystopia edges out their last album based almost purely on the strength of the title track (even if it is a bit of a Hanger 18 rehash) and The Threat is Real. Those two songs are among the best they've released this century.

Listening to this now. I'm really liking it. Kind of in the NWOTHM vain. Reminds me a little of Seven Sisters..it has a vibe like that.

I missed this...sounds super-intriguing based on the name drop alone  :) Will check it out!

I had been on a self-imposed moratorium on checking out new releases so far this year, but I'm gonna have to do a faceplant on that today, too many interesting releases coming out.

This one is quite good so far.
