Another couple from Friday:
Just one listen each, so it's really first impressions...both sound quite interesting, though.
The first is Sgàile - Traverse the Bealach, one-man band from Scotland. I read he also collaborated with Saor. It sure is an album that "takes its time", and it's quite long at over an hour for 7 songs. But there are some real nice, epic melodies all over. It has a bit of a folky feel to it, but not overly so. The vocals are not necessarily super-impressive per se, but I think they work well here (all cleans, unless I missed something)...they absolutely remind of me of someone/something, but I can't quite put my finger on it. The way the album ends is quite beautiful and it sure leaves you with a nice feeling.
The other one is Lord Dying - Clandestine Transcendence. Again, it's a bit early to say, but on first listen it's probably the first record in 2024 that truly had my ears perk up. It has an overall proggy sludge feel that's not totally dissimilar from the Witch Ripper's album from last year, but the more over-the-top Queen/Muse influences on that one are replaced by a dark/gothic approach (case in point, a song like Unto Becoming). Also a bit on the long side, but some really cool songs and moods in here...a variety of vocal approaches, from the gothic to the harsher (never too harsh, though). Dancing on the Emptiness kinda jumped out as a particularly remarkable tune. What I believe to be the "single", I AM NOTHING I AM EVERYTHING, is not particularly representative of the overall sound.
