Ploughing through my 2023 album rankings and this album really is great. Definitely for fans of Between the Buried and Me, Devin Townsend and older Leprous. Omnerod - The Amensal Rise.

Sounds like I have to give it a try.

Yesterday and today:
Lowest Creature - Witch Supreme / Recommended by a friend. Some eighties trash vibes, lots of energy and very good open production. The genre isn't my cup of tea but I liked this one. Might work even better in a live setting

Sermon - Of Golden Verse
This one is in heavy rotation since I've made my 2023 ranking. One of those albums that keeps growing with each listen and might top them all in the long run. Songwriting is fantastic both on melodies and hooks. It's packed with great riffs and creative drums. Add the overall atmosphere which I find hard to describe and you end up with a near perfect progmetal album.

It's a great, great album, I agree. I love how it manages to be moody and expansive (in a Tool-like way, if you will), but it doesn't do that at the expense of memorable melodies and hooks, as you said. And yes, the drumming is phenomenal, very tasteful. I had enjoyed their debut too, but this one is a step up, imo.

Yea, definitely give Omnerod a go, I've spun it twice today! I've had that Sermon album on my radar, but decided I'd hit my quota of 2023 albums. Well I guess I'm gonna have to spin it now.

At the gym tonight...

I love Kelly David Smith's drumming. So groovy!

I'm listening to this now.  I give it a strong solid.  A bit laid back for them?  yeah, groovy I guess.  But damn they have a lot of albums I still need to get through.

Like I said, I was really disappointed with it when it came out. It was a big change in style and I was not on board. But it has aged really well. It's classic Flots!
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

I enjoyed it.  Had it on in the background but had some real nice and cool moments.  I can certainly see though how you'd be let down upon release but certainly seems like one of those albums that over time earns appreciation back after the dust settles.

It's so groovy and riffy. I think the drumming is amazing. I mean there's way more flashy guys out there, but I love Kelly's use of stops and starts, and he has a real groove/swing to his playing.
He and Stefan Kaufman (80's Accept) are two of my favorite drummers for that reason. Their drumming has some musicality to it.
