Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

If you removed the last 2 songs this would be a perfect pop album.

Charles Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus

Miles Davis - A Tribute To Jack Johnson

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

CHVRCHES - Screen Violence

This is quite a nice spread of things here.

In particular, I don't think I realized until the last few months that you and TAC both like some slower, doomier stuff.  That's become more of my mood in the past decade, though I don't quite understand the aspects of what you like in those enough to send them in roulettes yet.

I think it just comes down to what clicks.  I do like doomy stuff, but it's not really something I have gone out and searched for, it just pops up but I guess my moods lately lead towards that direction.  I mean, On Thorns I Lay, Morne and Fires in the Distance all ended high on my top 10 of 2023, so I guess you're correct but there's a fine line where doom is beautiful and atmospheric to being too plodding and boring.  Again, for me just what clicks.  I can't speak for Tim but I think he'd somewhat relate to that statement.  We're pretty close on our tastes too, so no surprise here.

Is Shadecrown classed as doom?  Listening to the album I would have just thought they were melodic death metal.

Speaking of melodic death metal, onto this;

They're in the intersection of death/doom and melodeath, in a similar way to say Daylight Dies or October Tide, or a band I know that TAC also likes, Enshine.

Just been listening to this EP (Aegis) by new band Notochord.

The band features the original vocalist from The Contortionist, Jonathan Carpenter, and also gives off some Cynic vibes. It's only 22 minutes long, so well worth a go.

Real glad that Rock Nacional has revived my love for music overall. Lots of great, great songs here, for almost all tastes.

Shadecrown is really nice. I shouldn't have posted that so I could use it in the Wolfking roulette.
They're a band that I had sampled and Saved, but for some reason forgot about them. Arrich sent them to me in my roulette last spring so I started really checking them out.
I definitely wouldn't think doom when I think of Shadecrown.

Enshine was my gateway to harsh vocals. I wouldn't classify them as doom either, as I really don't care for doom style. I do find Enshine...moody...which is quite different from doom.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

I was going to make the comment that you should have kept them quiet.   ;D

I think moody is a good alternate word when we're talking about doom.

I can definitely get behind the "moody". To me, it's all about the melancholy...some of my favorite bands/albums are those that nail that combination goosebumpy sadness in the music. Not to say that I want to listen to sad music all the time  but it's certainly something I tend to connect to as a musical expression.

That Shadecrown album is very good. There are also some traces of mid-career Sentenced in there (Slivers!), which is always a good thing in my book.

As for me, a mixed bag of genres over the last few days...

Anyone familiar with Operus? They are a Canadian band, and this is, I believe, their second album (came out in 2020). Pretty interesting "theatrical" power metal. It's a bit over-the-top at times, but not to the point of excess cheese. And it can be (relatively) heavy and fast-paced too. Enjoyable, for sure.

Doom has a pretty massive variety of different approaches to it.  Even though it's occupied a sizeable chunk of my listening in recent years, there are large swathes of it that are popularly associated with it that I either find good but unremarkable, or that I find quite uninteresting.

Voices in the Sky is great. So epic and catchy. Strangely enough, given how much I enjoyed it (my first encounter with Brymir), I haven't gotten around to checking out their other albums yet.

Yep, this is a tasty groove/thrash album. Within the wave of albums in that vein that came out in the early 90s, this is one that hits the mark. Not one for the history books, but very enjoyable.

I remember being so disappointed with it when it came out.  When The Storm Comes Down was so awesome, and this was such a huge step down. But time has been kind to Cuatro.

I guess most 80s thrash bands took some version of the Black Album route around that time. I know there were variations around that theme, but it's undeniable most of these guys felt like slowing down the tempo then. I only started seriously getting into music in 1992, so I didn't quite "live" through that change. In many cases, these were my first album experiences for some of the bands, and going backwards to discover their previous sound wasn't quite as shocking.

Other than the bass players, they had the same lineup for their first 6 albums. Cuatro is the 4th of the original 6 album run.
