Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I've tried some of their other albums but they did very little to me. This one is just a great atmosphere and amazing riffs :metal

At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul

In Flames - Clayman
In Flames - Colony

Dimmu Borgir - Inspiratio Profanus

Perfection!

I listened to the new Dimmu Borgir album this morning. It was fine as far as cover albums go, but not something I'll revisit often. It's nice though, as it's really short.

Loved the new Moon Safari.  This one has the same kind of vibes, just a little edgier.

damn, its been ages since I listened to this and remember why I loved it. The energy is off the charts.

Yes, this and Silent Alarm are so good!

yeah I like Silent Alarm a lot too, although not quite as much as AWITC.
I stumbled on this mini documentary about them the other day was reminded of that. I like how they mentioned both Foals and Everything Everything at the end, who are 2 bands who I always associated with them, but I now prefer to them overall.

Two releases from today:

The Inculter sounds great. Already listened twice and it's more varied than their previous. First song proper is more classically thrashy (and there are others too, of course), but they definitely do more mid-tempo stuff here. I'm saying this not in a bad way, to be clear. It's all very dynamic. Early Slayer/Kreator/Sepultura influences are still there, for sure, but there's a lot of interesting (and melodic!) guitar work too (see Age of Reprisal, Extinction, or the title-track, Morbid Origin)...almost old-school Metallica in some of the harmonies.

The new Health (RAT WARS) is a ton of fun. I know they have become more and more popular in the scene in the recent years, but I had only given cursory listens to their stuff. This one is almost an industrial metal album, and it's really catchy.

Halfway through this and your description is apt. I get some mid to late 80's Anthrax riffing and a some Suicidal too.

Whatever it is, it's fucking awesome! :metal

Kiss - Dynasty
Kiss - Unmasked

Love both! Hey I sought you out to get your thoughts on the new album by Head With Wings. Very avant-garde alternative prog rock that's been growing on me a lot. I remember you selling me on Ross Jennings solo album and I showed you the band Nothing In Writing. Ironically Ross gave his endorsement on new Head With Wings on their Bandcamp page. I hope you like it! Let me know either way.

Is that good? Recently bought a Dio box set with his last 4 albums, still haven’t listened to that one.

It has its moments. I generally regard it as his worst album. It's either this or Master Of The Moon. I haven't listened to it in YEARS, but I was riding along a stretch of road today, also for the first time in a very long time, where I associate this album with, so I thought I'd spin it.

It's one of the two albums he did with Tracy G as his guitarist (the other is Strange Highways which is excellent). A tad grungy but he definitely has way more character in his playing that both Craig Goldie and Doug Aldrich combined.

I have to say that I really enjoyed my listen tonight. Ronnie sounds great on it.

And yes, I can hear your references too...there's that chugging riffage that could totally be from those bands

The first three albums from Dio are amazing and mandatory.  The next two are really good but not completely required.  Angry Machines I believe is the worst of his cataloge.

What a great album,,Tim.

I actually have the vinyl upstairs and haven't heard it in yeurs, but an online radio show I listened to played I Don't Need No Doctor from this and I thought I'd hit the whole thing. Peter Frampton rips on this.
