Today's TACommendation:

Fires In The Distance-Air Not Meant For Us

Was going through some of the harsh vocal albums that I had Saved but had not had a chance to circle back to. This album is fantastic. Long sweeping instrumental passages that are so soothing.
Check it out!!

I enjoyed it when it came out, but didn't end up getting super-excited about it. It has some lovely atmosphere, with those swirling keys/synths, but it almost feels like one long song. Or so I remember. I know it was very well received here on DTF. And now that it has a TACcommendation too, I guess I need to revisit  ;)

So, I revisited this today. It was really piano I was thinking -  not synths  I mean, that's something that makes the sound of the album very distinct and quite beautiful. The flip side, as I remembered it, is that it makes the mood a bit similar across a few songs (I'm thinking the opener, the instrumental Adrift, Beneath the Listless Waves and Psalm of the Merciless in particular). It is a cool listen, though.

Cool. I just loved the long instrumental bits.

TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Checked out this one fairly recently, it was pretty cool, kind of in the intersection of our interests.

Yeah, and I think Nick would like it too.

The singer sounded a bit like the guy from Idle Hands, but without the annoying wolf howls.

Some 2023 re-listens for me too...

The Horrendous album gets better with every listen. So many cool ideas. Caroline Polachek does that kind of pop I really enjoy. Eclectic but not pretentious, with lots of interesting twists and always catchy.

Sodomisery, not-so-great bandname aside, was a nice surprise this year. Epic, melodic black-ish metal from Sweden. Great riffs (not always an obvious thing in this genre), pretty prominent keyboards/orchestration and pretty good vocals (clean too). Nice production. The opener Coming Home is a good sample of what they offer, including a lush acoustic interlude. Same for A Storm Without a Wind. Very, very enjoyable.

:lol at the bolded. So true.

Yep, Tim and I talked about this when it came out.

I went back and forth for a bit on how much I enjoyed it, and I ended up pulling the trigger in the end, on Bandcamp. It's very enjoyable, imo. The vocals are good, although they tend to be a dominant thing that perhaps makes the song a tad too uniform. Overall, I still prefer Idle Hands/Unto Others, but the band has potential.

I need to get to the Horrendous album.

Yep, especially if you liked the song Luke sent you. I can see the vocals being a bit of an obstacle, but they vary them more on this album.

Also, you should check out the Sodomisery record, when you have time. It's pretty good stuff.

I was never able to get into the new Horrendous as much as their last one. But I think I'm in the minority on that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm actually not sure yet where this one will place in their discography...After a good number of listens, I think I might like it more than Idol. It almost feels they let loose a bit more here (in the best possible way). However, I'll say that, overall, Anareta might still be my favorite.

Another new discovery, another new heavy prog album to hit me out of nowhere in the last month. This one is a female fronted band with some amazing performances and outstanding production values (mixed by Rob Aubrey who does Big Big Train and just keeps outdoing himself). Really fresh and exciting stuff with a lot of diversity.

This was pretty cool.  "Listen" was a particular standout.

I had to do a double take. When I scrolled past it on my phone, it almost looked like Raw Power by Iggy and the Stooges.
