Quite a good batch here over the past few days, revisiting these: Clics Modernos is starting to grow on me, what a fascinating record; the Sui Generis album is a bit more elaborate than their previous records, this time introducing synths, and it works quite well; Signos kind of disappointed me, I know it's a classic, but I'm just not that big into that 80s Rock sound; Los Niños que Escriben en el Cielo was fine, a few cool songs, but it's just too Jazzy for me. The rest are quite interesting.

Yea, I thought it was really good. A real good mix of classic and modern prog.

The new split record by Worm/Dream Unending. This is a must listen for all the extreme metal fans kicking around here.

I saw that on youtube last night, and I couldn't figure out what the hell. It's two bands??
I dropped the needle on it and a lot of it seemed kind of doomy.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Yea, two separate bands (who both released epic albums last year). It's a death/doomy release but with some great melodic guitar work as well. I personally love it.

It's a split, with several tracks by each bands separately, but packaged together.

Yep, that's a split.

Really cool album. I prefer the Worm tracks, but the whole thing is really good. I sent Worm to Ariich in his last roulette, but they didn't go over as well as I'd hoped.

Glasser, I need your opinion on this one, dude.

I have never heard of two bands putting out a "split" album before. I guess they maybe save on production costs that way? Or is it even a physical product? If not, why would you do something like that I wonder.

It's pretty common for underground metal acts. It's a cross-promotion thing, the idea is for fans of one band to get exposed to the other.

It's way more common in metal and punk than in most other genres.

Sometimes the songs are exclusive to the split as well, at least at that time, which adds collectability.

Interesting. In the words of Travis Kelce, "two things at once!" I guess it's not too much different than having an opening act who is sort of playing for exposure.

Yeah, I believe that used to be a more common thing in the past? There were some pretty classic splits in metal, I kinda remember...

One that comes to mind is the Emperor/Enslaved split in the early 90s.

There were definitely a ton of them in the 90s.  They seemed to go away for awhile, but I've seen an uptick in them again in recent years.

Yep, except as far as I can remember, typically the bands doing the split were more or less at the same level of popularity...

It's really popular in the punk scene. Basically every one of my favourite punk bands has made a split record (usually the bands cover each others songs). The best one is the NOFX/Rancid split, that shit is pure fire.

Before spinning the Dream Unending/Worm one I was actually listening to an Alkaline Trio/Hot Water Music split, so yea they're super popular.

Have to check this out, for sure...

Glasser, I'd also add "Foreverglade", by Worm (it's their most recent album "proper", as Bluenothing is, I think, considered an EP). Great death/doom with some killer lead guitar.

Gave Ram it Down a re-listen for the first time in a long time. While not a bad album in my opinion it's totally their cheesiest.

A few from the workweek...

(DT's The Gallery really is one of those lightning-in-a-bottle type albums for me. Always felt the band pushed themselves to their limits on this at the time. There's so much beautiful, melodic fury here. Fantastic stuff)

...and a couple of Friday releases:

The second one is Afterbirth - "In But Not Of". The gurgling vocals are, well, an acquired taste. Once you view them as just an additional element, though, musically these guys are so cool. It's generally quite brutal but, like on their previous album (Four Dimensional Flesh), there are so many twists and turns. Not something I'd listen to every day...super-interesting nonetheless. Curious if anyone in the DTF's death metal "gang" has heard this?

Honestly my least favorite kind of death metal vocal and it's why I avoided the genre for so long because I thought that's what every band would sound like lol.
