Over the last few days' commutes...

Couple of random comments...11 Dreams is such a great album. Hadn't revisited it in a while, and it's such cool mix of things: modern, melodic, heavy. The title-track is fantastic. Also, Burning Bridges is my favorite Arch Enemy album...to be fair, I have stopped following them for many years now, but no song I listened to in a while has truly enticed me to explore more. Doesn't matter...This particular record is so tasty in the way it incorporates a ton of classic rock/metal influences, especially in the choruses. I mean, the chord progression in Pilgrim's chorus is basically BOC's Astronomy. The solo section in The Immortal is totally Zakk-era Ozzy. Plenty more fun "nods" scattered here and there. And Michael Amott is on fire here (his brother Chris too, but I have a particularly soft spot for Michael's soloing...in Carcass and Spiritual Beggars as well)

Lizzy Borden's Master of Disguise was fun too. I didn't know it super-well, and it was a nice listen. A bit theatrical, not too much cheese  ;)

@Nick - that's one of the better 8-album listens you've ever put here.  The only one I haven't heard is Lizzy Borden.  BWP and 11D are all-time favorites and This Is the Sound is a relatively newer favorite.

I'm only familiar with a few Mercenary albums - I am a big fan of Everblack, 11 Dreams and, to a slightly lesser extent, The Hours That Remain, but for some strange reason, I've lost track of them after that. Anything specific you recommend?

As for This is the Sound, yeah, that's very good. Although I like The Spell even better.

Oh, and this specific Blackwater Park revisit was actually inspired by a fun video from The Prog Report, ranking Opeth albums (MP is in it too):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOGvJeyxo1o

(Not a bad ranking, btw...except I disagree with the placement of Morningrise...I get it's almost a "different" band, but I really like that one)

First Breath is before Everblack.  A bit less polished, but that might not bother you.  Great songs anyway.  Architect of Dreams is more streamlined, but still pretty great with most of the classic lineup.  After that they lose half the band and while still quite good, don't have quite the same spark anymore.

I agree on The Spell being superior.

Ranking Opeth albums is a perpetual nightmare for me.  I saw that video pop up in my feed some time ago, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

@Glasser, you’ve inspired me to watch some of the classic King Diamond music videos, as I’ve never seen them. Man, they are so ridiculously 80s, I love it. Boy, there is lots of spinning round from guitarists and flailing the instrument like it’s possessed by the ghost of grandma herself :lol

Excellent!

I've watched Mahavishnu Orchestra videos and listened to most if not all their studio albums, but I'm not sure I've heard any of their live albums.  I'll have to do that sometime.
