Friday releases…

You know, I haven't had a chance to check out the new stuff yet. Anything that you particularly liked in this batch?

Bat Sabbath covers were fine but nothing special, Spirit Adrift was some solid classic metal and will definitely spin again, Thee Oh Sees was one of their better recent releases but still a fair bit of filler (which seems par for the course for them), Atreyu is not worth the time, total skip fest, Horrendous was really good and has a chance of cracking my top 30 of the year, Skálmöld is some pretty standard Icelandic Viking metal, suitably epic in places.

Yeah, I'll definitely check out Spirit Adrift and Horrendous. I particularly enjoy SA's Divided by Darkness and Enlightened in Eternity (the former a touch more than the latter)...their earlier, doom-ier records are good too. I think they might be just missing that "spark" to push them into "great" territory, but they are very good. Curious to hear the new one.

@Luke - this ones for you man!

Epic band name AND 8-bit artwork, I’m fucking in dude!

Dude, this was like one of those mid 90s Napalm Death albums where they went all Fear Factory. It wasn’t bad but was hoping for some 8-bit music in there. Definitely keep these recommendations coming though, if for no other reason than it’s worth the look on my wife’s face when I tell her I’m listening to Maggot Twat  :lol

Oh, it also made me want to play Super Metroid.

I probably never would have given this album a chance were it not for hearing The News in Litho's playlist, and yeah, the rest of the album is pretty good too! Good enough for me to now own a Paramore album. :lol

Yes, it's a really neat album. I actually enjoy most of Paramore's stuff, and I feel they have been bringing some interesting/different ideas to the table with their more recent albums (I enjoy their old material too, though). Not sure what you have heard outside of this record, but you should give their s/t and After Laughter a whirl too.

I have more thoughts surrounding this to get out sometime later since I've now heard their whole discography, but they seem to have arguably at least four distinctive eras, and I can certainly see some people liking one or two of them and not the others as much.  I enjoy all of them for various reasons.  This will be somewhere on my year-end list for sure.  I've always been curious about them since their emergence was just in the wrong timeframe for me musically, so I'm glad Tomi took me up on them on my list for that round.

Some leftovers from last week's Thursday commute:

And finally some of last Friday's releases:

All pretty good stuff. Godthrymm is a little less Paradise Lost-y and more classic doom. It's a long album with a lot to digest so I'll have to revisit. Spirit Adrift was enjoyable, as usual. Horrendous was a bit different than expected, I guess, but I liked what I heard...I mean, you can obviously tell it's them, but they brought in some new elements to their sound...will see where that goes with further listens. And "Of Awakening" by The Circle was rather intriguing. A lot packed in about 35 minutes. Some black, some gothic, a little over the top.

Home Video - Lucy Dacus

Lucy is from my hometown. I've never met her, but I knew her younger brother in high school. I've never listened to her music until now, and I didn't realize how big she had gotten in recent years. She was on the cover of Rolling Stone, if that still means anything in 2023.

The music is ok. Not really my thing, but glad to see she's successful.

I like her a lot, both her solo material and with boygenius.

Mistland (song) by IOTUNN

Anyone else enjoys their new song as much as I do? Their last album is good but damn that song is just monstrous. It might be my song of the year at the moment. I’m very excited for the next album although I think it only releases in 2024:(

Leaning hard into trying to become familiar with more Michael Schenker albums. He has a LOT of them. Listened to several this weekend including The Unforgiven which is really great and I also loved the purely instrumental one Dreams and Expressions. Need to catch up on his UFO stuff.
