A few more I had forgotten I gave a listen to during the last week or so. Part 2.

Everything Everything Get to Heaven
Took me ages to get to this, and I'm not sure I missed out on much tbh. It's quite inventive Art Pop for sure, but the melodies? I ain't feeling them.

Café Tacvba Re
Very fun Mexican album, goes from some Traditional Folk music to Rock, to Ska, to Thrash Metal, to uhhhh.... yeah. But it flows quite nicely! Gonna revisit this and their other more experimental album Revés / Yosoy, which for some reason is not on Spotify.

Phoebe Bridgers Punisher
Hmnnn I might revisit, I found it had a very interesting and lovely sound, but the actual songs were just OK to me. Except the closing track, that was amazing.

Sneaker Pimps Splinter
Classic late 90s Trip Hop, I love the first song (Half Life), but the rest of the album is kinda forgettable tbh.

Deftones Adrenaline
Quite rough around the edges as is their debut, but it has some legit tracks here and there. The jump in quality to Around the Fur is just amazing.

Lana del Rey Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd
Second listen, and I'm not sure about it. The atmosphere is wonderful but it's just way too long, and the mix of genres doesn't work that well for me.

Ok, last batch for now (I hope). Part 3.

Grouper Ruins
I think I've listend to a few Grouper records at this point, and they're all nice ambient stuff, but I kinda fail to vibe with them. This one was lovely for sure, but not very memorable.

blur Parklife
Hmnnnn not digging this tbh, it's quite annoying even :lol

Japanese Breakfast Jubilee
It saddens me when I listen to an album so well written and lovely, but I just don't connect with it.

Queens of the Stone Age ...Like Clockwork
Quite intriguing album, not your usual Alternative rock effort. I need to listen to this band a bit more.

Susanne Sundfor Blómi
I had completely forgotten she released an album this year! Yeah this is very nice, quite soft and laid back, with hints of jazz here and there. I'll revisit.

65daysofstatic The Fall of Math
It's fine I guess, I prefer their No Man's Sky soundtrack, but not by much tbh.

Today’s listening…

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Tarkus
Wang Wen - 7 Objects in Another Infinite Space
Fishmans - 8月の現状 (Live)
Deftonres - Gore
Omar Rodríguez-López - Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.

Any Wang Wen fans in here?

Also, @Sacul some great picks here.

Fave 3 from the last few posts are Ghost, Blur and Deftones. No real surprises there. I’ve sampled close to half of the albums from your last three posts, which is pretty good going since most of them aren’t really my thing.

I’ve listened to a bit of Blur this week as the new album dropped. The new one was pretty boring and underwhelming, but I have a special fondness and nostalgia for Parklife. It was the first CD my older sister ever owned. She got a CD player and the album for her 14th birthday and as you can imagine, played it to death! I wasn’t interested in music at all at that age but my sis was massively into grunge and Britpop so a lot of her taste influenced me, even if I didn’t realise it. The album just transports me back, great album.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.

I like all the Godspeed releases up to this album but I've listened to it a few times and can't remember what a single moment of it sounds like.

I’ll be honest, the only album that’s really clicked with me is G_d’s Pee at State’s End. I enjoy Lift Your Skinny Fists to a degree but I don’t adore like many seem to. Obviously they are a band that reward you on repeated plays of these albums so maybe one day it will click.

Such a nice run. It was a pleasure to live through all of these releases in real time. Dream Evil, which I thought was a precipitous step down at the time, has actually aged pretty nicely. But you could tell something was awry in the band.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

I think if you go back, yeah, it goes right along with the run. All I know is when it came out, I was like WTF is this? But it has really aged gracefully.

Huh, that's interesting.  Was it really such a departure from the two before it?

I just felt like there was a general lack of quality throughout. I think Vivian basically checked out halfway though. I saw them in September of '85 with Vivian, and then after Craig Goldie joined, Dio did a short run of East Coast dates in April or June of '86. Best part about that show was Accept opened!!

I can definitely see the dips in quality through the album.  I always though most of his albums had a few filler songs anyway.

Yeah it had been a long time since I've listened to these albums all the way through and I forgot about that. Like this entire run was solid but all of his albums have 2-3 throw away forgettable tracks on them.

I was reminded why I usually just listen to my favorites from them.

Sól án varma - Sól án varma  one of the best atmospheric black metal releases I've heard in a while

Cellar Darling - The Spell

Terzij de Horde - In One of These, I Am Your Enemy

And further I may have gotten myself into something which might take a little while

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation
That title deserves to be named in full. Love it!

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Omnium Gatherum

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard- Infest the Rats' Nest

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Sketches of Brunswick East

What is also clear is just how much of a step down it was from going to Vivian to Goldie.

:lol I mean yea, my recommendation is to listen to every album, but we’ll get you there.

Omnium Gatherum was the album that really won me over as a fan, and it’s a great starting place as it covers many styles of Gizz. I guess the first question is, which are your favourite songs off OG?

My ‘go to’ albums to recommend for beginners are the following, in this order…

I’m In Your Mind Fuzz
Nonagon Infinity
Polygonwanaland
Murder of the Universe
Paper Mache Dream Balloon
Butterfly 3000
Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava

This covers pretty much covers everything (style wise), before you delve even deeper into the rest of the albums. The only style not covered on the below albums is the microtonal stuff, but I’m not the biggest fan of that personally, but if you are definitely also try Flying Microtonal Banana!

After listening to the first four albums on this list, I’d also suggest watching these videos (at least the first three on the playlist) on the Gizzverse…

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLluo87o05TIGLPcsQ6ZZj-AZtSqEeHY0n

They explain how all these albums are tied together, greater connections to other albums and theories on how the Gizzverse ties together all the albums (pretty much).

Hell, I want to host a listening party now just to listen to all these with you now!

Oh, lastly I created a playlist, emphasising flow, that covers many many of their best songs…

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1FMmAVVl3bc58AVsrFksFj?si=U0dPMqFQS26kg2eEPk_OTA

It’s currently 8 hours long, so give that a go as well.

I've always liked it as well. I don't know if it was the production or not, but there's no bite or personality to the guitars on that album.
Compare it to Rowan Robertson's wicked nasty tone on Lock Up the Wolves, or even Traci G's style on Strange Highways/Angry machines. Say what you want about those albums, but at least they had a distinct style when it came to the guitars.
