Over this week's commutes so far...





Some random comments - Spellcaster is (was) the pre Idle Hands/Unto Others band...more classic metal-oriented, but I think I can hear that veil of melancholy in the melodies already...very enjoyable record (and great guitar work). Big fan of the Anubis Gate s/t....nice and crunchy guitars but very melodic too. And the melodies have a little off-kilter quality to them that makes the whole thing pretty unique. Good stuff. Unleash The Archer's Abyss is brilliant. Love the melodic-rock influence on songs like Through Stars and Carry the Flame, and the title-track and Faster Than Light are killer power metal songs. Last but not least, The Wind That Shapes the Land is fantastic and one of my favorite songs of 2020. Finally, shout out to Luke for Droid...can't quite remember how he discovered them, but this is a super-cool slab of Voivod/Coroner-inspired thrash, with a bunch of interesting influences. I pulled the trigger on Bandcamp...

I hadn't listened to OSI's debut in a long time, and it's kind of how I remembered from way back then...an ok album, but pretty underwhelming in relation to the expectations I had when I bought it (given who was involved). Not a huge fan in general but, within their discography, I prefer Free - it seems to me they embraced more fully a certain kind sound, instead of straddling the "prog" and whatever else Kevin Moore wanted it to sound like  ;) I think the music benefited from it.

Yes, indeed. That Nightingale album is so good. I hope Swano is not done with them.

I need to check out Anubis Gate's more recent albums. I really like Andromeda Unchained, The Detached and the S/T, but for some reason I haven't quite gotten to the records that followed...

Thanks for reminding me of this album, I've probably not listened in a few months. I'm honestly not sure how I discovered it, but I think it way my Spotify 'Discover Weekly' playlist. Either way it is a hell of am album and some real roulette fodder.

Absolutely yes to Vektor! All three albums are good, but this might be my favorite.
