Aerosmith - Rocks

I've been in an Aerosmith mood all week. That run of albums (Wings/Toys/Rocks) is magnificent, as was mentioned in another thread.

The most Lost Horizon-ish album that Danial Heiman has sung on to this point. The music is quite a bit safer than Lost Horizon, but damn, this is hitting the spot. AOTY contender.

There's really not a lot of miles on his voice. He pops up on an album every few years. The Dimhav album a couple of years ago, for example.

This is easily the most stretched out vocally he's gotten since LH. It's an amazing performance, actually.

Yep, this is excellent. The band has had this up on their Bandcamp for a couple of weeks now. I maybe wish there was a bit more "memorability" factor to the songs, like the two tunes they released in advance. But maybe that's not a bad thing, and it just means more longevity. Plus, I suspect more of this album will worm its way into my brain with more listens.

Power/epic metal is not my #1 go-to genre but, yes, this is one of those records that hit the spot...

The music is still pretty decent though. It's more than ..solid. And it's not just that Heiman is on it. He's been on a number of forgettable albums...remember the Warrior Path?
It's the fact that he's wailing on this. Sounds so good.

Oh, definitely...I'd say way better than decent  :) The music stands on its own, but the singing really is crazy good.

I haven't properly listened to Warrior Path...I did check out The Mad King at some point. I remember it was ok, but I guess "forgettable" is a good way to describe it.

The new Sirenia isn't doing much for me.  Sad, since I love a lot of their albums up through the last one.

Edit - The album seems to get better/heavier as it goes along.  The first few songs didn't knock me on my butt, like their albums usually do.

It’s not great, but I like it. First time listening to the band actually.

Sounds like a completely different band. Good stuff. I like the new stuff too but this is clearly superior.

They've always been a rather inconsistent band.  Perils of the Deep Blue is a good mid-career one.

Ring of Gyges - Metamorphosis

Prog metal from Iceland. Very cool record - leaning on the modern side of prog, in a way, with more than a bit of Haken influence in there (Cabin Fever, Nautilus, The Face of God...). Sounds really good, with great vocals too. I like how it can be uplifting and heavy at the same time (the opener Dragonflies). Favorite song is probably Holy Water - a bit more mellow, but very "emotional", like the best Pain of Salvation, and with a beautiful ending.

Maybe not quite crossing into "greatness" yet, but this is very good. Anyone else here heard it?

Another prog record, this one from Sweden, came out last year. One of the guitar players is Daniel Magdic, the original guitarist in Pain Of Salvation. I definitely slept on this band, but the record is really good. Very "breezy" and melodic, reminds me a little bit of Anubis Gate at times (maybe some Voyager too, in how pop-oriented some of the vocal melodies are)
