Pristine - The Lines We Cross
Man, I have discovered this album a couple of days ago (came out in January), and I'm loving it. From Norway, I guess the general blueprint is retro-sounding rock, but there is more than just that. First off, the singer Heidi Solheim is
phenomenal. But more generally, everything is crafted so well. The first couple songs are pretty classic (the groove on Ghost with a Gun is SO good!), then things get "serious" with the long song The Loneliest Fortune, basically a two-part suite. The first part is a slow burner that could easily find a home in one of the Avatarium records. Then it all gets pretty jammy (with a flute too!). Another fantastic song is Carnival - basically a mini, intimate symphony (with an actual string ensemble). Starts out like a Kate Havnevik song (or something that reminds me of her), with beautiful melodies (just vocals and strings), to then turn into a more grandiose finale with the whole band. Some songs have a cool clash of vintage and modern/poppier sound (Sad Sack in a Cadillac, Instant Conclusions Decade). Then the title track...The verse is a Zeppelin-esque stomp with Bjork-like vocals, if you can imagine it, which then flows into an anthemic chorus. Great stuff.
The first real surprise of the year so far for me. I'll have to explore their previous albums too...
