Matt Thompson is no slouch, but Mikkey Dee and Mike Portnoy are legit my two favorite drummers on the planet. And I’m of the belief that KD’s music took a big slide when Mikkey left. The drumming is one of the key reasons those early albums are so special, in my opinion.

Yeah, I've had no issue with Thompson at all.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Mickey Dee was amazing on those early King Diamond albums, he really set the tone for the band's sound going forward. With all the histrionics that go on up front, I sometimes forget how critical the drummer is to the overall sound of this band.  His drumming came across as spontaneous, dynamic and nuanced... he's definitely missed.

From what I've seen of Matt Thompson, he looks like a beast of a drummer as well. He was killer when I saw them live. I don't know if it's the production or what, but on those later KD albums like GMYSP, his drum sound comes across as muted and subdued.

Well, as far as subdued, the music itself feels a bit "simpler" in the later KD albums. But I find Matt Thompson really strong and confident. He's a driving force.

That said, I'm not an expert on those early albums as I really don't listen to them.

Well, I agree on Matt Thompson.

I'm no drumming expert, but I was mightily impressed when I watched this:

I actually have seen that before, and yes it is awesome.

If you want to watch some great live drum playthoughs, watch some of the Paul Bostaph stuff with Slayer.

Yes I agree Matt Thompson can competently play Mikkey Dee's parts. But you're not going to hear that level of drumming on latter KD albums, unfortunately.

Also fun fact if nobody noticed; Portnoy “incorporated” that drum intro into his drum intro for Honor thy Father.

Nice vid.  He's just all round solid.  Understated, just does his thing and always dependable.

New MF track..

https://bravewords.com/news/mercyful-fate-perform-the-jackal-of-salzburg-live-for-the-first-time-we-have-a-new-song-we-d-like-to-test-on-you-video

It's hard to gauge from a bootleg live vid but didn't think much of it.  King sounds fucking awful.  There were some interesting instrumental sections but I've always thought it's pointless playing a new track no one has ever heard of live.

I should check them out. I've never listened to MF/KD. Where is a good place to start?

I've seen that Joey Vera has played bass for them and Courtney from The Iron Maidens is a huge fan and does a lot of practicing with their music.

As I said on the other thread, I certainly am not a KD/MF expert, but I'd go with these:

MF: Melissa, Don't Break the Oath (these are classics, deservedly so), Time
KD: Abigail, Them, Conspiracy

Goo - same here as Nick. I'm not an expert. I just have never seen the King and enjoy a few albums. But I have Melissa and Don't Break the Oath from Mercyful Fate. And I also have Abigail and Them from King Diamond. Those four are a good spot to start.

EDIT - just picked up a ticket. Wow. I got fourth row balcony (on the center aisle), and with all the TM charges, it was 86 bucks. General admission floor is 5 bucks less (no thanks). Pricey, but it'll be worth it.

Don't Break the Oath is the best place to start for MF.  For KD, probably Abigail.
