What's your tree look like this year?
« on: November 29, 2022, 06:21:29 AM »
I'll start!

We have to leave the bottom most part of the tree bare because of the pets.

Still in the crawl space. Thanks to the 'Rona, and my wife's not great health, nothing got done. The day after Thanksgiving has always been the day to get everything out but not this year. Honestly, I don't want to even bother but I'll do whatever the family wants once I am better.

The day after Thanksgiving has always been the day to get everything out

yep. Same here.

This year the outdoor lights were a PITA because I had a GFCI outlet blow out and it took me a bit to get the right fix. By a bit I mean three trips to Home Depot and roughly $150 of crap. All to learn all I needed was a tester to ID the 'live' wire.

I'll post ours when we get it upstairs.  It's a Charlie Brown tree.  Small enough to put on an end table.  just the wife and I so we just keep it small.

We usually put up two real trees.  We will be getting them this weekend, if all goes well.

Nothing fancy....but it's up.

We usually put up two real trees.

We were 'real tree' every year up until two years ago. I was beaten into submission by my wife on it.....I do miss the 'feel' a real tree creates in the house but I will admit I like the ease of having an artificial one that is easy to put up/take down and store.

Pro tip for you fakers out there! You can buy a real wreath, cut it up a bit, stuff it inside your fake tree, and you'll still get that signature Christmas smell in your house.

In our case, I would probably be OK with an artificial tree, but my wife loves real ones, and I don't mind too much.  It definitely feels good.

The only thing is that in our house (which we bought in 2018), we have standard height ceilings, so we can't get a really big tree.  When we first moved here to Raleigh, we rented a house for two years, and that house had a vaulted ceiling in the living room, so we would usually get trees around 12 feet tall.  Kind of a bitch to get in, decorate, and get out after the holiday, but I've gotta say, once it was up and decked out, it was pretty magnificent.

I never done anything bigger than 7 feet, but that's mainly because of space (small NYC apartments). Would love to have something bigger eventually. Now I just settled for a tiny tree (really tiny) with wall decorations  :)

That would be pretty cool!

When our boys were younger and still engaged in the whole 'magic' of the Christmas season......we'd go out and do the whole cut down a live tree at these tree farms and what not and we'd make a day of it. It was fun and made some good memories out of it.

Once they were older and that whole aspect of Christmas was essentially gone.....it was easier for me to move on to the artificial tree route.

That's one thing I've never done.

I totally get the appeal, but honestly, I feel it would be out of character for me lol.  I'll save that for people who are outdoorsy and good with their hands.

When I was growing up, outside of Christmas morning, going to pick out our tree and decorating it was the defining aspect of Christmas for our family. It still is for me at 46. And while my wife and kids appreciate picking out and decorating our tree, they don't enjoy the process like I do. I set it up, spend an hour optimizing the lighting configuration, then the kids hang a couple decorations and call it good, while my wife handles all the other interior holiday decorations.

I went down into my workshop last night for the first time in a week or so.... big ol' hole in the ceiling right above my drill press. The tree stand developed a crack in it since last Christmas and all the water we've given the tree so far has seeped through the floor. Good times!!

We like it!

My kids always like to joke about their Dad's non-traditional, non-denominational, metro-sexual, holiday trees.  :lol

Can't post mine yet because it's not up.  We usually do it the weekend after Thanksgiving.  But my two kids that are still at home wanted to wait until our oldest gets home on winter break from college, so we're waiting.  Outside lights and other inside decorations are up, but we're holding off on the tree.  I think it's cool that they want to do that.

Not as decorated as it usually is due to having a new cat in the house, hopefully he doesn’t get into it.

I've never liked Christmas, growing up we lacked many things that it was depressing.
Now that I have 2 kids I have started to enjoy Christmas and have made up my mind about this celebration.
I want my boys to have good memories and I am doing it for them.

Here's a video my wife put together:

I hope you enjoy it.

I remember Christmas always being the happiest time growing up, and can only hope I do all I can to make my kids feel the same.

A quick tour of trees in our house

This little guy always gets me nostalgic, we've had this ceramic tree for as long as I've been alive.

When we were younger my sister and I had our own tree in the basement for us to put up all of our own decorations. We stopped doing that on our own years ago, but my mom liked having a tree down there so now she puts up this little guy every year. That book at the bottom is Die Hard told in the style of The Night Before Christmas

This is where our main tree used to be before we expanded the back room. We sit in this area of the house for appetizers on Christmas Day so my mom likes having a tree here still.

The main tree. When I was young we used to get a real tree every year. The grammar school my sister and I went to had a random day off in early December every year and we'd drive out to this little shopping center in the middle of nowhere in PA and walk around and go in stores and they always had a Christmas village set up in an empty little chapel. We'd eat lunch at the same restaurant every year and then go to the same tree farm to pick one out and cut it down. Then I moved on to high school so I didn't have the same day off anymore, the pickings at our tree farm got pretty slim, and we made the switch to artificial for convenience. I do miss the whole ritual around getting a real one though.

My mom also has this little Christmas tree collection that overlooks the dinner table on Christmas Day

Photobucket sucks.
