06 No Quarter

...

05 When the Levee Breaks

I had No Quarter at #32 (and had I taken the bloated Song Remains version into account, as I did with Dazed, it might have been lower).  The main figure is cool, but it's just a little too weird (primarily the effect on the Mellotron and guitar, the name of which I can't recall) and overly long for my taste.  Definitely an "are we there yet?" song.  Once we got to the top 10, I figured it was far more likely that this would be this high, as opposed to not on the list at all, but I think it's crazy that it's this high.

I had Levee at #18.  Totally solid song, but #5??  I've been saying for a couple days that I just wasn't sure about one of the final songs, and this is it.  Very surprised this is top 5, but I'd have been even more surprised if it didn't make the top 40 at all (which will be the fate of a few other songs under discussion privately, but we'll get to that later).

I had Levee at #38 and almost left it off. Guilty as charged. It's still a good song, though.  :tup

No quarter, on the other hand, is tremendous. Top 20 material for me.

I had No Quarter at #9. This song is a fucking monster. Count me out on any live overblown drawn out version. Just hit me with the studio version and I'm good.

I had When The Levee Breaks at #19. Such a great and iconic drum intro, but Kev...one of Bonham's best performances?? Nah.. In fact, this song slipped a little in my standings as I did my run throughs. Still a top 20 track though.

 No Quarter.
My n. 2 song. For a moment, I even toyed with the idea of putting it at n. 1 but in the end, I couldn't in a good conscience ignore another monster in the room just for the sake of giving spotlight to a less well-known song. Listening to No Quarter has been a mesmerizing experience since the first time I heard the song more than 20 years ago.

 When The Levee Breaks
My n. 8. One of the LZ songs I can enjoy any time and anywhere, without needing to be in a specific mood. The groove is just so infectiously catchy. But my expectations of its final ranking were somewhat contrary to Kev's - I am surprised it finished this high. I thought I would be one of the high rankers but there must have been quite a few people who rate this song even higher.

I had No Quarter at #28, which gives me my first Bingo line (the 20s). I'll also make the obligatory mention of Tool's cover version of the song, which is worth checking out.

When The Levee Breaks took my #1 spot. I'm pretty surprised I was the only one to give it the gold sash, but over the last week DTF has seen Duke voted the best Genesis album (still chuckling about that), and a handful of lunatics look set to vote off Supper's Ready before it even reaches the podium stage of the song survivor. So, yeah, this ain't the first time I've been surprised by the good folk of DTF this week.

Maybe I'm wrong; maybe I'm right; maybe I'm some kind of lunatic.  And the best album finished third.

I struggle to definitively identify a favorite Genesis album, but Duke has always resonated with me on a more personal level than the other albums so that always gives it an edge. No idea what’s going on with the Supper’s Ready vote (I haven’t voted for it yet), but I’d have it behind at least two other Genesis songs personally (one from the same album). As for Levee, I just don’t see the appeal really (I didn’t submit a list, but if it ranked it would have been pretty low).

No Quarter I just heard yesterday for the first time while checking out Houses of the Holy. What a unique and cool song! Surprised it finished this high just because it’s pretty out there. The vocal affect, fuzzy guitars, and overall tone kind of remind me of Radiohead’s Kid A album. I knew Zeppelin were creative but didn’t know they had done anything this experimental. I dig it.

When The Levee Breaks is one I’ve never liked, though I can appreciate that it is kind of Bonham’s trademark groove and I do like me some accordion from time to time. Just not a lot going on melodically that appeals to me here.

How you hurt me. What did I ever do to you?  :) :) :) :)

Comparing Zeppelin with Radiohead......... Radiohead, IMO, can't clean Zeppelin's rest rooms.

More seriously, if you're into the song, and interested in exploring, check out some of the live versions.  More (and different) than, say, just the extended Dazed And Confused, they really take No Quarter in a cool direction.  Really interesting stuff out there.

That’s the reaction I anticipated! But seriously, it does have that sort of feel to me.

Listening to Kid A now and realizing that Thom York’s voice/delivery is an awful lot like Plant’s in general (not just on No Quarter).

Awful is the only part of that sentence that needed to used for a York/Plant comparison.

Awful is the only part of that sentence that needed to used for a York/Plant comparison.

I wouldn’t call either great singers really, but they use what they have pretty effectively. They both share a kind of slurred, loose, nasally style. Plant is more screamy and York is more whiny might be how I’d put it. But I could see York maybe being influenced by Plant (never heard that he was, it just occurred to me).

Holly shit, DA, that story about the accident is terrifying. It's unbelievable how a song sometimes lines up so terrifyingly.

There were many cars totalled (mine included), but only two broken ankles or legs.  At least 'In My Time Of Dying' was only music, and not something actually experienced that dayl.  ;)

finally catching up.....
10  Black Dog  #9  ‘One does not simply ‘Black Dog’ without ‘Rock And Roll’   though…

09  Rock and Roll  #7 ….I can hear this one on its own. ;)  Both are classic rocking tunes to start the classic album.

08  Dazed and Confused  #5    I didn’t hear this until college, and man, did I ever hear it a lot then (and the following years). The perfect ‘indulging’ song.

07  The Rain Song  NR    not ranked doesn’t mean not enjoyable.  Simply not a ‘must’ for me.

06  No Quarter  #20    Yet this one is.  Perhaps it is because I listened to Side Two more often.

05  When The Levee Breaks  #18     John Henry Bonham.  :tup   Various highlights throughout, and then during the final section and seconds, you realize what a great album (or album side) experience you just had, whether indulging or not.  Then it ends with those odd final notes.
*******
29 songs ranked of the 36 posted so far.  I'll end up with 32.  Not bad considering how under the weather I was when I filled this out, accounting for three oversights (brain farts).

I have enjoyed actually listening to each song as they've been posted, most of them multiple times, with only one being a bit of a struggle (unlike all the other countdowns.....).
...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

04 Immigrant Song
Appeared on 20 of 21 lists
Highest Finish: 3 (Zoom E, The Realm, kingshmegland)
10 Top 10 Finishes

How they managed to pack in so much awesomeness in under 2 1/2 minutes was a remarkable feat.  This song floored me the first time I heard, and it has held up really well. I ranked it 7th.  I remember a LZ fan I worked with in the 90s remarking how difficult the bass line in this song was to get just right (he could play almost every LZ song on bass, but struggled with this one).  Incredible song.

03 Achilles Last Stand
Appeared on 20 of 21 lists
Highest Finish: 1 (kingshmegland, pg1067, DTwwbwMP)
11 Top 10 Finishes

Good song, but I think it got the long song bump from this crowd here.  I ranked it 28th, which even feels a bit high, so I think I was a victim of overrating it as well.  I am not surprised it finished 3rd here, but this has never been on my go-to list of LZ songs.

Immigrant Song.  Well, I have the notes of the opening stanza tattooed on my arm (as the inscription on Mjolnir), so it's gonna rank high for sure.  I'm torn between whether I'm quite content that it's as short as it is, or whether iI want more of it - when I do want more, there's a cover out there with a bunch of A/B-list prog-metallers that has 3 guitar solos in it, so that's a little gratifying.  #6 for me.

Achilles ... Not surprised at all that it topped the list for 3 DTFrs.  I mean, this is a prog-metal forum, and this song is as close to prog-metal that Zeppelin gets.  Great track, but only #12 on my list.

Curious to know which member for each left these unranked.  Who's gonna fess up?

So now there's only one question to be answered - which of the top 2 (which apparently made everyone's lists) will finish in the top spot.  Flip a coin I suppose.

So, notes:

Immigrant Song:  I don't really like politics in my songs so I left it off.  There you go, Jingle, fessed up.   No, I'm kidding; it's an excellent song.  We cranked it the other night in my garage while working on my stepsons car, and we sort of had a bonding moment, it was cool.  The 'ah-ah-ahhhh!" part is epic (and you can hear it in other songs as well; Back In Black, anyone?). Yet again, because of it's familiarity I sort of left a spot for other, more unheralded songs (Celebration Day and Out On The Tiles from III are on my list, for example).

Achilles Last Stand: always a very good track, it reached really epic proportions when I saw Temple Of The Dog (Pearl Jam with Chris Cornell instead of Eddie Vedder singing) do a cover of it at Madison Square Garden.   Matt Cameron got the push and pull of the tempo absolutely PERFECT, and it was by far the best song of the night for me.  Chris had a neat little line at the end: something to the effect of "I can't believe I got a chance to play THAT song in THIS building" (Zeppelin played more shows at MSG than any other arena in the United States).

Achilles Last Stand is my fave LZ song. Its repetitiveness works greatly for an hipnotic feel and all the different drum fills help to building the tension and move the song forward. Incredible instrumental and atmosphere during all the song!!

I was the culprit for Immigrant Song, as you can see in my post.

If you and I are talking about the same two songs (and I am not speculating, just assuming) I don't think the last two are at all interchangeable.   Both made my list, and I get the appeal of the later song (Plant in particular has praised it as their "best work",  though he is also spiteful of the earlier song so there may be some of that in there) but to me, they are not peers.

Stadler:  Immigrant Song is an "excellent song"
Also Stadler: Rates 49 other LZ songs ahead of it

It took me a hot second to realize your political line was sarcasm, because I had to re-read it to believe what I was seeing before I saw your 'kidding'.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

I am kind of in between on Immigrant Song. I like it when it comes on in the Thor movies. Outside of that experience, I don’t think it’s a song I was ever particularly fond of. Listening to it now, as great as the opening hook is, I’m not sure the song itself is that remarkable. Still I probably would have ranked it fairly high if I had done a list.

Achilles Last Stand I only knew from DT’s cover. I may have listened to the original once before, but just based off the cover I would have ranked it near the top of my list. Listening to the original now, DT stayed pretty true to it, so yeah, great song and worthy of this finish.

Haha, it was a joke (there's a discussion about "immigrants" going on right now in P/R).

As for the "49 songs ahead of it", yeah.  I really struggled with this.  I would probably consider the Zeppelin catalogue the strongest in rock history for any act with more than five albums.  You take the MIDDLE song - not the best, not the worst, but the sort of "average" song from each album, put them on an album, and you STILL have a great record.  A record that most bands would kill for.

Both of these are brilliant. I had Achilles at #8 and Immigrant at #15.

I am also confident my top two will be the overall top two, which is a glorious feeling.  :heart

Immigrant Song  My n. 6. The best pure rocker by LZ. When I listened to LZ for the first time in my life, it was "Remasters" greatest hit 2 CD collection. I remember feeling kind of disappointed by the disc 1. I was looking forward to finally hearing what was supposed to be the most legendary hard rock band and most stuff sounded too bluesy and dated to me - not exciting at all (obviously, it grew on me later). There were two exceptions and one of them was Immigrant Song. This was exactly the kind of catchy and all around awesome tune I had been expecting. And it still is. I also gave it some extra points for being short as most LZ songs go on for a bit too long for me (with the length being achieved by being repetitive).

Achilles Last Stand  My n. 3.  This is one LZ song where the repetitiveness works for me and I don't even notice it goes on for 10 minutes (no, it does not get any extra points for just being long - there are a few LZ songs I actively dislike for that very reason, such as In My Time of Dying). Like No Quarter, this was a standout song on the Disc 2 of "Remasters" GH collection since the very beginning and now more than 20 years later, listening to it still feels like a unique experience.

Hmm... one of those contains one of the best solos ever recorded while the other is an overrated bore-fest  Wonder which will way round they'll be?

I had Immigrant Song at #24. It's an excellent and classic track. I still really like it and would make a Zeppelin playlist still today.

I had Achilles Last Stand at #31. When I started putting this list together, I originally had Achilles around #10ish. But a ran through the song a couple of times, and well, it's length really isn't justified to me. It's like one straight line for 10 minutes. If this was shortened to say, 6 minutes, it would've been so much better.

04 Immigrant Song #17    no tattoos regarding this song. :lol  I enjoy this as much as a dozen I assigned higher numbers to.

03 Achilles Last Stand  NR   when I went through my list last night, I thought 'oh, the last song on Presence made it'.  Seriously.  That LP slipped through the cracks for me until '85, and the timing (and the LP) was not a good fit.  Speaking of timing....this is a perfect time for my post, as I'll second TAC's eloquent prior comment

I had Immigrant Song at #39. It's great but I certainly don't think it's anywhere near the 4th best in their catalogue. I suspected it would finish high though. Yesterday I 'knew' what 3 of the 4 remaining tracks would be, but as to the 4th, I was torn between Immigrant Song and a certain song from Physical Graffiti which, not to give away the title (I guess technically it could still make the list), is a wholesome tune about enjoying a nice warm dripping slice of pastry. It's my biggest surprise of this countdown that it (almost certainly) hasn't made the final list.

Achilles Last Stand came in at #9. Monster of a song, and really on any given day could have appeared anywhere in the top 10 other than my set-in-stone #1.

My biggest surprise - and it's a big surprise, considering the number of covers that are out there of it - is on the first album.

EDIT:  Then again, I tend to have a lot more "unrated"'s than most on these polls.  :)

@ Dave ... The fact the warm slice of pastry did not make Top 40 is also my biggest surprise - I'd thought it was going to be No Quarter until yesterday.   Unless Kev is cramming 3 songs into the Top 2, I don't think any of us have any doubt as to which those top 2 songs are - just the order.

Confession: I just learned the other day while listening to Houses of the Holy for the first time that the song that goes "oh oh oh oh oh oh, you don't have to go" is called D'yer Mak'er. If I had made a list, I would have tried to rank it but not had any clue what it was called.

On that note, do people not like D'yer Mak'er? It's pretty great IMO.
