I'll confess, I'm one of the three who left Over the Hills off their list. I think it's fine but nowhere near as good as the majority of their catalogue.

I had In the Evening at #29, and would say it's one of the songs I've not listened to nearly as much as anything from their first 6 albums, and therefore is still somewhat growing on me. If I redid thos list in a few years I could see it ranking higher.

Ten Years Gone crept in at #10 for me, such a beautiful song. I remember getting the compilation Early Days/Latter Days, for Christmas back in like 2004 or 2005, from my Dad. That was the first time I heard Ten Years Gone and I loved it almost instantly. It still takes me back to that time, and off course my Dad.

The only two bands my Dad and I both truly loved were Led Zep and The Beatles  :heart

These bands always bring me back to him and I wish I could share this with him, as he'd get such a kick out of it, and loved to know how his list would've looked.

Over The Hills and Far Away is great, especially when the full band kicks in. Just a great hook. This one probably would have been top 10 for me, maybe top 5.

In The Evening is another that I really like. Love the atmosphere with the keyboards, and the Bonham groove. Also one of Page’s better lead tones. Really like how Zeppelin sounded on this album, and it’s too bad we didn’t get to see them build on that.

Ten Years Gone is one I didn’t know, but I really like it. A lot going on guitar-wise here. A dreamt tune with a lush forest of guitars! Good stuff in today’s tracks.

I had Over The Hills And Far Away at #26. Guilty of liking not loving, but I definitely like it. A Classic Radio staple.

I had In The Evening at #10. I was surprised how high I ranked this. I haven't done a serious run through of Zeppelin's catalog in a long time, but this kept killing a bunch of head to head comparisons.

I had Ten Years Gone at #12. Great tune. I wish I could've ranked it higher, but I wouldn't know what else to take out.

Catching up...

I had Since I've Been Loving You at #3. An example of a song I love from a musical style (blues) I generally don't care for very much.

Ramble On didn't make my list. All 9 songs from Zep II made my 50 song shortlist but in the end 3 missed the cut and this was one of them. Great song though.

Over The Hills And Far Away: #38. And right now I can't for the life of me think why I didn't rank it significantly higher.

In The Eeeeeeeevnin': #11. Great riff and I love that short spacey section in the middle.

Ten Years Gone: #25. Cool story about Robert Plant's lyrics to this song, per Wikipedia...

"Let me tell you a little story behind the song "Ten Years Gone" on our new album. I was working my ass off before joining Zeppelin. A lady I really dearly loved said, "Right. It's me or your fans." Not that I had fans, but I said, "I can't stop, I've got to keep going." She's quite content these days, I imagine. She's got a washing machine that works by itself and a little sports car. We wouldn't have anything to say anymore. I could probably relate to her, but she couldn't relate to me. I'd be smiling too much. Ten years gone, I'm afraid. Anyway, there's a gamble for you"

Fascinated to see which songs take up the final 14 spots, because I just tallied up which tunes I for sure thought would make the list that haven't already and the album breakdown looked like this:

I: 3 more to come
II: 1 more
III: 1 more
IV: 4 more
Houses of the Holy: 4 more
PG: 2 more (travesty that it won't be 3)
Presence: 1 more

Those of a mathematical bent will see that adds up to 16. Very curious to see which of my (prior to the list starting) dead-cert predictions haven't made the final cut.

I don't think I have a solid grasp on the consensus, but my guess would be:

I - 2
II - 1
III - 2
untitled - 4
HOTH - 3
PG - 1
Presence - 1

Two a day from now till the end!

Here are today's:

14 The Song Remains the Same
Appeared on 16 of 21 lists
Highest Finish: 2 (nobloodyname, pg1067)
6 Top 10 Finishes

As much as I love Houses of the Holy, this is one of the two songs from it that I can often take or leave.  Musically, it is great, but Plant's sped-up vocals make him sound like he is singing with helium at times, which I do not like.  Unranked for me.

13 Good Times Bad Times
Appeared on 18 of 21 lists
Highest Finish: 4 (twosuitsluke)
3 Top 10 Finishes

This is on that "best track 1s from a band's first album" list. Great, great song.  Short and sweet, it kicks your ass in short order. I ranked it 16th.

From here on in, I can't envision a scenario where there's a song I don't have ranked.  Clearly, that's only going to be the case for the group en masse for 2 songs, but I don't think I have any more hot takes.  We'll see

Song Remains The Same - What a great opening to follow up IV with.  I love the opening riff, but even more importantly, JPJ's bass runs are amazing.  Was 21st for me.
Good Times Bad Times - the legend of the double bass drum done with one foot.  What Bonham does with a 8-piece drum set (+ cowbell) here is simply astonishing.  23rd on my list
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Yes, the drumming on Good Times Bad Times, specially from the intro to the chorus, is nothing short of amazing. Something like you have heard the drumming on Rush's Anthem at the time, both really groundbreaking.
And... happy new year for everyone here!! :metal

I was never too crazy about Good times bad times. Or any song from the debut, actually.

The Song remains the same, on the other hand, is remarkable. Plant's vocals are so odd that they make the song special and kooky. I couldn't imagine it with "normal" vocals.  :lol

The Song Remains the Same is one that I recognized when I heard it but couldn’t have told you anything about before then. Really liked it though. Has an almost proggy guitar figure that I could see being from a Yes or Genesis song. The helium vocal parts are pretty odd though.

Good Times Bad Times is one I’ve heard a million times and never had much interest in. It’s fine, and listening to it now outside the context of radio I can appreciate it a little bit more. Just never one that I paid much attention to before.

I had Good Times Bad Times as Not Rated. I kind of forgot about this one, or maybe I took it for granted. I think songs #35-#45 are all pretty interchangeable, and this sits right in that group, unfortunately on the outside looking in.

I'd have bet good money that Song would make the top ten.  Since I was one of the high rankers, I obviously think it's awesome.  The only possible negative is the "push push" line (which is not unique to this song).

I had Good Times at #27.  Really good early Zep song.

This ranking of this song for me (#10) is basically for the LIVE rendition, which IMO is SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER than the album version. Always a highlight for me when I saw them in '73, '75 & '77 :metal

I had The Song Remains the Same at #22.

Good Times Bad Times was at #4 though, boy do I love this song. It's where it all started and what a statement to start your career. I unashamedly love everything about LZ I and this just says so much about the bands intent. I love to sing along to this song, and the iconic bass pedal magic Bonham was exhibiting, just breath taking. At the time I heard it I didn't really understand what I was hearing, or that he was doing it with a single bass pedal. I often air drum along to music, especially the kick drum patterns, but I've no clue how he was really able to do this.

I always remember my Dad telling me about hanging out with his best friend not long after LZ I dropped. His best friend was a drummer and was attempting to learn how to play the intro, he said he was there for hours and hours trying to get it. Don't think he ever really mastered it, but he got somewhere close.

Anyway, glad to see it make an appearance this high  :tup

Happy New Year, LZ fans, and here are the two that just missed the top 10.

12 Babe I’m Gonna Leave You
Appeared on 18 of 21 lists
Highest Finish: 1 (twosuitsluke, Cool Chris)
7 Top 10 Finishes

I had this at 22. Damn good song for sure, but Plant repeating "Babe" 331 times at the start of the second verse has always bugged me a little, otherwise this might have been a top 10 song for me.  Just one of those weird things that always leaves a mark for me.

11 Whole Lotta Love
Appeared on 18 of 21 lists
Highest Finish: 2 (hefdaddy42)
7 Top 10 Finishes

This is one of those overplayed songs I still think is great, but my affection for it isn't quite what it was in years past.  I ranked in 21st.  Some of Plant's vocalisms are a bit much in the middle section - do I really need to hear Plant making noises like he is a 17-year old getting his first blow job? :lol

Whole Lotta Love.  Dat opening riff. Just putting it on now brings me back to 17-year old jingle.boy discovering it for the first time, baked out of my mind, home alone having just got the CD courtesy of my Columbia House Subscription.  Dropping the disc in, closing it, putting the volume as loud as my speakers could handle, and just sitting at my desk chair in the middle of my room to experience it.  The sigh, the riff, the bass coming in.  To say it was an "experience" is an understatement. The psychedelic middle section drags on too much (when you're not high), and is the reason I don't rate it terribly high.  I had it at 23.

Babe... great tune, but it's never the song I think of when I think of LZ I.  There are others that come to mind first, even if I prefer this over them.  I had it at 32... though I'm thinking it might have deserved to be higher.

Two great songs but Whole Lotta Love has lost it's luster for me from overplay. That riff is undeniable though, just a killer tune.

Cool Chris...

Well after all my fawning over Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, and Led Zeppelin I in general, I'm actually surprised it rated this highly and that 6 others had it in their top 10; I'd thought I was starting to go mad! Yep, this song is everything to me. It reminds me of my Dad, my older brother, being a kid, losing a lover, good times, bad times, all of it.

As for Whole Lotta Love, I had it at #12. Led Zeppelin I was my first album and general full song experience, bit actually Whole Lotta Love would actually the Led Zep music I ever would've heard. In the UK we had a show called Top of the Pops (I have no clue if this show was ever even broadcast outside of the UK) and the main riff from Whole Lotta Love was used in the intro theme. It was always just the Top of the Pops theme to me, and it blew my mind when I realised it was actually Led Zeppelin all along. Anyone else (other than Ariich :lol ) first hear Whole Lotta Love that way?

Since I've Been Loving You (#17) is an amazing song with production values ahead of its time - including ahead of the rest of LZ1! Its arrangement is incredible, with a lot of layers that give that imense acoustic and heavy sound for the song.

Whole Lotta Love (#28) has one of the greatest riffs in the metal history but that middle part indeed was a bit too much since a looong time ago.

I am a bit surprised that you think one of your bolded is still coming.  I won't say which one, but I will say that you are otherwise pretty on the money, except that you left off your list a major classic that is still to come.  Trying to avoid spoilers, so I will leave it at that.

Didn't rank Babe.  There's some cool stuff in there, but it should be about half the length.  Whole Lotta Love at #9.  Had I taken live versions into account, it'd have been lower.

My rankings so far (22/30)...

40  ???
39  ???
38  Living Loving Maid (She’s Just a Woman)
37  Hey, Hey, What Can I Do

I'm guessing my 1, 3, 4, 8, 12, 23, 31 and 32 picks are locks for the top 10.  My 26 and 40 have ZERO chance of making it.  Beyond that, I'm not sure about the last 2 top 10 spots.

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You always had a mystique about it for me. LZI was one of the couple LZ albums I never owned, and it would only get played on the radio sparingly. So when it did come on, it was a treat, unlike the slew of other hits that got played every hour. It's not their best song, or the one I'd use to introduce someone to the band. But it's my favorite.

I had Babe I'm Gonna Leave You at #5. I really love this song, especially once it gets going. #5 may be a tad high, but it's still always been one of my favorites.

I had Whole Lotta Love as Not Rated. I remember hearing this and it was always the guitar solo that blew me away, as short as it is. The opening riff is epic, but everything else about the song kind of blows. This is the first of the two Classics that I left off my list. The next one apparently made the Top 10.
