Vanden Plas / Rainmaker was the SOTY for me though.  That much I know.

This is a fantastic song - one of my favorites from Vanden Plas, for sure. But isn't it from 1997 (The God Thing)?

It is.  But it's on a live album that was released in 2000.  If live versions count, that'll give me some more options for some years for sure.

Well fuck... I guess it snuck in here because of Spirit of Live.  Clearly I wasn't paying much attention - I was even thinking "I'm sure Rainmaker was a 90s song"  :lolpalm.

Ok, that said, it'd be a tossup between At the End of the Day, and Dawn of A Million Souls as my SOTY
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

Inspired by our conversation here, I went back to The God Thing, and Rainmaker in particular...first off, Fire Blossom...what a great instrumental intro piece. One of the rare cases where it actually deserves its spot, it really builds up the opening of the album. And Rainmaker, yes, it's definitely one of my favorite prog-metal songs from that mid-to-late 90s wave of bands that followed I&W. That and Soul Survives, from their debut. They really nail that mix of great melodies and exciting instrumental stuff.

12. Ulver - Nowhere / Catastrophe

That's another great one! As is Perdition City in general.

1984

So the random number generator came up with 1984. A year, like, likely many of the years from the 80's I suspect for me, I find I enjoy many American Top 40/Friday Night Videos/Billboard Hot 100 tracks. Still, many "Album Tracks" are on my list, and some songs that came out as singles or b-sides in 1984, but were on albums from 1983 or 1985.

Fun and deep list though

Billboard

Albums: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_200_number-one_albums_of_1984 (only a few on the list, and 1 of them wasn't released in 1984)

I agree. ;)

Grace Under Pressure is one of my favorite Rush albums though.  Not that Rush won't dominate other 80s years. And 70s.  Because they totally will.  :)

"I Can't Hold Back" - Survivor (Fantastic album)

Yes! I missed this one.

26 The Police - King of Pain

Is this one of the singles you are mentioning, being released in 1984? If that counts, I'm definitely including King of Pain too. Fantastic song.

Yeah, Synchronicity was 1983, and it looks like it was first a single in the US in 1983 but wasn't released in the UK until 1984. I've been going by album release date, but there will likely be a number of songs released as singles in different years than the album.

https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/single/1984/

but you're correct is it did get released originally i 1983 and of course is on Synchronicity which came out that same year
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/single/the-police/king-of-pain-tea-in-the-sahara/

Also it didn't end up on my list, but Weird Al of course also had the Parody "King of Suede" on In 3-D the same year, lol.

Oh wow, I could name a ton of songs from 1984.  Scanning through my iTunes, below are the ones I would say are my biggest favorites.  And I am going with one per artist, to be a little fair.  Many are from my MTV-watching days.  :coolio :coolio

The Boys of Summer - Don Henley (one of my 10 favorite songs ever by anyone)
Night Comes Down - Judas Priest
What's Love Got to Do With It - Tina Turner

I love The Boys of Summer SO much...maybe not "top 10", but it's a fantastic song. Night Comes Down is one I would have included too, but I had quite a few from Defenders of the Faith already. That's a top 3 Priest album for me. Tina Turner is great too...actually, it made me think by association (because she sang it) of a song I forgot to include...John Waite's Missing You, another classic from that year...

I'll try and narrow it down for the thread, but here's a link to my 1984 Spotify playlist I made a few years ago.

Nice!  When I've got 9 hours to spare, I know what I'm listening to!

Missing You is another that I associate with 1984 and watching MTV, but while it's on my master 80s playlist, it's one I almost always skip over when shuffling the playlist, so I didn't list it here. Same goes for Ghostbusters by Ray Parker, Jr.

I should have had Rock Me Tonite by Billy Squier on my list, bad video and all. :lol

Man alive, I'm seeing so many fantastic tunes up above.  As it was happening, 12/13 year old jingle.boy was still a pop/Top-40 radio listening kinda kid.  So a lot of my 'faves' would fall in that bucket.  I'm not sure I've alway tagged the years in my iTunes library completely/accurately, so I'm bound to miss more than a few.  I'll just echo the sentiments of Boys of Summer and I Can't Hold Back being absolutely fantastic.  I think during the year 1984, The Reflex (extended mix) was probably my favorite song of the year.  Tim... the lack of Slade on your playlist shames you.

I'm gonna start by quoting others, purging out those that don't tickle me, and bold some of my absolute favorites from the year

15 Rush - Distant Early Warning
16 Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good
17 Rush - Red Sector A
18 Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers
19 a-ha - Take on Me

28 Scandal - The Warrior
29 Hall and Oates - Out of Touch
31 Duran Duran - The Wild Boys
33 Wham! - Careless Whisper

36 Nightranger - Sister Christian
37 Pat Benatar - Love is a Battlefield
39 Huey Lewis and the News - The Heart of Rock and Roll
41 Sade - Smooth Operator
43 Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls
45 Lionel Ritchie - Hello
46 Deniece Williams - Let's Hear it for the Boy
48 Huey Lewis and the News - Heart and Soul
53 Huey Lewis and the News - If This Is It
54 The Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane
59 Depeche Mode - People Are People
61 Teena Marie - Lovergirl
64 Genesis - That's All
66 John Waite - Missing You
67 Duran Duran - The Reflex
68 Pat Benatar - We Belong
69 Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
70 Weird Al Yankovic - Midnight Star
71 Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner
72 Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night
74 Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)
76 The Pretenders - Back on the Chain Gang
77 Animotion - Obsession
78 Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like a Record Player)

79 The Romantics - Talking In Your Sleep
80 Marillion - Incubus
82 Don Henley - The Boys of Summer
84 Van Halen - Panama
85 Stevie Wonder - I Just Called to Say I Love You
86 The Cars - Drive
87 Bon Jovi - Runaway
88 Queensryche - Warning
89 Queensryche - N M 156
90 U2 - Pride (In the Name of Love)
93 Queen - I Want to Break Free
94 Elton John - I Guess That's Why they Call it the Blues
95 Yes - Leave It
96 Billy Joel - For the Longest Time
97 Ratt - Round and Round
98 Madonna - Borderline
104 Queensryche - En Force
107 New Edition - Cool It Now

Bad - U2
Hammer to Fall - Queen

Infatuation - Rod Stewart
Couldn't Stand the Weather - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Don't Answer Me - Alan Parsons Project
What's Love Got to Do With It - Tina Turner
Out of Touch - Hall & Oates
Do They Know It's Christmas - Band Aid

Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight
Whitesnake - Slow An' Easy
Whitesnake - Love Ain't No Stranger
Bryan Adams - Summer of '69
Dio - The Last in Line
Prince - Purple Rain
Ratt - Round and Round
Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
Triumph - Spellbound

And I don't think the below had been mentioned

Prince - Let's Go Crazy (this would be 1b to The Reflex as for my fave song at the time)
Slade - My Oh My (one of the greatest power ballads of all time, imo)
Triumph - Time Goes By
Triumph - Midsummer's Daydream
Van Halen - Hot For Teacher
Bryan Adams - One Night Love Affair
Bryan Adams - Run To You
Bryan Adams - Kids Wanna Rock
Helix - Rock You
Kenny Loggins - Footloose
Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero
Mike Reno / Ann Wilson - Almost Paradise
Nena - 99 Red Balloons
Foreigner - I Want to Know What Love Is
Chaka Khan - I Feel For You
REO Speedwagon - I Can't Fight This Feeling
Glen Frey - The Heat Is On
Pointer Sisters - Neutron Dance (man I loved this tune!)
Murray Head - One Night in Bangkok
Steve Perry - Oh Sherrie

No love for Savatage boys?

Crazy that only 5 albums held the top of the Billboard chart for the entire year - and Sports only had it for 1 week!
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

Damn, I had the Bryan Adams album Reckless album listed as 1985 incorrectly in my iTunes.

I would need to edit my list for sure, as Run to You is one of my favorite songs of the decade.  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Tim... the lack of Slade on your playlist shames you.

So, Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply is not on Spotify. However, The Amazing Kamikaze Syndrome is (The Euro version released in 1983). I should add those songs to the 1984 list now that I think about it. I love KYHOMPS. I had it when it came out.
